Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of History, for the Grades The aim of this outline is to present the connected threads and principles which the author has worked out in detailed form for children in A History for Graded and District Schools. Two chief ends have been aimed at: first, to present a plan of work which will, if followed by the teacher, tend to develop in her mind a real sense of history, - of its growth and unity; second, to suggest such material for the use of pupils as will tend to develop in their minds the true historic sense and lift them from grade to grade into ever wider and richer historical views. The outline is based upon the idea that pupils in history should be led to feel and participate in the life of the people they are studying, - feel the problems of daily living which confronted them and strive to solve them. Like all outlines, it must be filled in with material drawn from books, pictures, maps, stories, poems, and other illustrative material, in order to be made effective. It is simply a skeleton; the teacher and pupil must clothe it with flesh, and breathe into it the pulsating life of history. To aid toward this end, in addition to the history of which this book is an outline, a list of books has been suggested at the close of the outline of work for each grade. In making these lists care has been taken to give teachers such information as will enable them easily to judge something of the nature and fitness of each book for their particular needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book Outlines of Old Testament History

Download or read book Outlines of Old Testament History written by Erastus Blakeslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
