Book Christian Life and Practice

Download or read book Christian Life and Practice written by Owen C. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the Christian life and the practice of Christians and the church from an Anglican perspective. It begins with an analysis and explication of the structure and process of the Christian life before God in the church and the world involving a five-fold rule of life and the relation of this to spiritual direction. This is followed by an analysis and critique of the current spirituality movement, which arose in the 1970s and which has come to dominate and mislead the churches. A sequel to the latter explains the origin of the spirituality movement in the current Romantic movement that arose in the 1960s and has influenced all aspects of our culture with ambiguous results. Next there is a critique of contemporary parish ministry as practiced in residential parishes that at best ministers only to the private lives of its members, followed by a fictional story of such a residential parish that suggests a new departure in parish ministry. Then there is a critique of preaching in the Episcopal Church that is generally considered to be poor, and a proposal of a way to overcome this. The concluding three chapters treat a fundamental problem in our approach to private prayer and a way to resolve this, a proposal for a way to overcome the current impasse in the Anglican Communion concerning homosexuality, and a meditation on the responsibility of Christians in public life.

Download or read book A House Divided written by Isaac Arten and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hardly noteworthy in contemporary discourse when the phrase, "We'll just have to agree to disagree" actually means, "We plan never to speak to each other again." For members of Episcopal and other Anglican churches, however, the Anglican tradition's identity as a via media demands forthright engagement with difficult topics by Christians committed to remaining in prayerful relationship with each other. In the spring of 2013, Duke Divinity School's Anglican Episcopal House of Studies began a series of "fierce conversations" designed to expose seminary students to the profound and painful reality of ecclesial divisions in North American Anglicanism (revolving around issues of human sexuality, scriptural authority and interpretive practices, and church leadership) while cultivating skills for leading congregations to worship, pray, and serve in ways that contribute over time to the full, visible reconciliation of Episcopalians and other Anglicans in North America. This book presents this year of conversations as a way of inviting congregations to take up the challenge and joy of "fierce conversations" in their own common life.

Download or read book Living With History written by Fredrica Harris Thompsett and published by Cowley Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-25 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fredrica Harris Thompsett, a scholar of the English Reformation, introduces us to the role that history has played in creating and shaping the Episcopal Church as we know it today. In giving us the broad lessons of Anglican history, she explores in detail both the historian's task and Anglicanism's distinctive history, from its roots in Scripture and the English language Bible and prayerbook to its seventeenth century flowering in poetry and prose and the different forms it has assumed in the American landscape from the time of the Revolution right through to the late 20th century. Thompsett begins by discussing the relationship between history, tradition, and change, and goes on to outline ten key "touchstones" or milestones in Christian history that are of particular interest to Anglicans. Since it is the historian's task to write the "unwritten" as well as the official story of the church, chapter three is a history of ministry in the church, especially of lay ministry. Chapter four looks at three ways that Anglicans have handled conflict and controversy throughout its history, concentrating on the Elizabethan Settlement, the American Civil War, and the impact of Darwin and the new science. Chapter five discusses how theological insight can be "recycled" to shed new light on the problems of today, focusing on Anglican theology of creation and how it helps us address ecology as a spiritual crisis. Finally, chapter six focuses on how a living historical tradition affects the life and mission of the church today, and how we are a part of that history.

Download or read book Anglican Manifesto written by Jack A. Estes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglican Communion must address a central issue: that of the postmodern worldview growing in its midst and the corresponding development of a One World Religion. It is an issue of theological meaning and interpretation, of right doctrine and right practice. It is an issue of Christian identity. The crisis has only just begun. Anglicans are the canary in the coal mine, gasping for air while worldwide Christianity looks on to see how much oxygen is left. The One World Religion is actively coming into being. Many Christian churches are grappling with forces and pressures from within and without to yield, to change, or to embrace this phenomenon, which can be oh-so-appealing. The time has come for all who would call themselves Christians to decide which set of beliefs and practices will be adhered to and taught in the church, and which vision will be offered to the world as the Christian faith. Anglican Manifesto seeks to ignite a reformation of Anglicanism in order to set the stage for a global reunification and revival of Christian churches worldwide.

Download or read book Reinventing Anglicanism written by Bruce Norman Kaye and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglicanism world-wide faces huge problems in the post-Empire era. Churches that were originally founded as colonial and missionary outposts by Great Britain and the United States have now become autonomous Anglican provinces; and what used to be a predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon group of churches in the northern hemisphere has become a truly global community, most of whose members live in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. Using the experience of the Anglican Church in Australia, Bruce Kaye tracks the modern story of Australian Anglicanism and reconsiders key elements of the New Testament, the English Reformation, and the ongoing theological tradition that relate to this story.
