Book Early American Literature

Download or read book Early American Literature written by Anna Lorraine Guthrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early American Literature: A Study Outline In this outline the points given for each paper are suggestions which embody the salient facts about the author. They may be treated as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. The Readings are also suggestions for which other selections may be substituted. The Recommended Reading represents the general consensus of opinion of critics and writers as to the best work of the various authors. Quotations have been freely given in the hope that they may help to a better and more sympathetic understanding of the author, and with the intent that each one may study and decide independently whether as estimates they are just and true. Sometimes special references are given under individual topics. It has not been the intention to make these take the place of the general references which it is well to study in every case. They have been given simply as a help to material bearing on a particular phase of the subject. The bibliography has been limited to a few books and to the best articles in periodicals most easily procurable. If it is thought that too many histories of American literature are cited the critical comments in the Bibliography will serve as an aid in selecting those most helpful. Book Contemporary American Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Literature: A Study Outline It has been deemed best to confine the work in this outline to a few authors, rather than to attempt to cover the whole field by giving a place to each one of the innumerable authors whose work falls within the limits of contemporary American literature. Pattee's "History of American literature since 1870" has been chosen as the main basis of the outline. Some authors not dealt with in Pattee have been included, preference having been given to those most commonly referred to in books and periodicals. Authors whose literary activity has had its beginning since 1900 have not been mentioned. In this outline the suggested points for each paper embody the leading facts about the author. They may be regarded as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. Book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel oped. An attempt has been made to show how each of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career of each of the greater writers and on their practice of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single Chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion of the condition of our literature at the beginning Of the twentieth century. NO living author is named in the text. To arouse the student's interest in the authors as actual men, the illustrations chosen have been confined to por traits and views, and to facsimiles of manuscripts. To enable him to see for himself the successive stages of the growth of American literature, and to let him dis cover how the authors sometimes came one after an other and sometimes worked side by side, there has been appended also a chronological table of the chief dates in our literary history. As mere text-book instruction can never be an adequate substitute for the student's own acquaintance with the actual works of the authors discussed, there have been annexed to every chapter bibliographical notes calling attention to the editions most suitable for the student's reading, and also to the best biographies and to a few of the most suggestive criticisms. Book American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Literature Classic Reprint written by John Calvin Metcalf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Literature A fuller treatment of Southern writers is to be found in this work than in other volumes of similar size on American litera ture. In the last decade or two the recognition of the literary contribution of the South has steadily grown, until the space allotted to the subject has assumed respectable proportions. In recent histories it covers many pages. Even yet, however, we have only imperfectly come to understand the far-reaching consequence in our literary development of the writings of men and women in the South since 1870; while the sterling worth of a few older authors is just now becoming more apparent as we are getting far enough away from the adverse conditions under which they wrote to see things in right perspective. In this account of American literature more space has been given to this group in the conviction that its variety and pecu liar quality should have wider recognition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of English and American Literature It is necessary, first of all, without going into the nice ties of modern philological investigation, to place our mother-tongue in a general way. Three great ethnic and linguistic families must be recognized - the Semitic, the Indo - European, and the Allophylian (or Turanian.) The third of these is a mere aggregation of such races and languages as are neither Semitic nor indo-european. For a scientific classification of the languages formerly grouped as Allophylian, see Morris's Outlines of English Accidence. Book A Manual of American Literature

Download or read book A Manual of American Literature written by John S. Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature: A Text-Book for Schools and Colleges HE systematic study of English Literature, as part of the course of ordinary English education, has been introduced almost entirely within' the last thirty years. The reader who will take the trouble to look over the old catalogues of our Colleges and Schools, will find no vestige of such a study prior to 1844. The Class Book of Poetry and the Class Book of Prose, issued in 1844, by the author of the present volume, were a feeble beginning in this line. Though intended primarily for reading-books, they were to some extent studies in literature. The selections from the various authors were in each case prefixed by a brief critical and biographical notice of the author, and were arranged in chronological order, so as to fumish the teacher and the scholar with something like an outline of the general eentse of English Literature. Book American Literature Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Literature Papers Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Literature Papers When shall we say, then, that the literature began to grow? We all know that the world first heard of America through Christopher Columbus, but when he landed here he found no public libraries or bookstores among the business places of San Salvador, nor were the Indians reading school books or story books as they sat under the palm-trees or on the beach. In the old days stories and history were handed down not by books, but by the memories of the old men and women of the tribes, except such few records as were made, often in picture form, on the woven work or wood work of the Indians. Some of the tribe histories were kept in this way, and are interesting to those who have learned to understand them. Different kinds of lines and marks showed when wars or deaths had occurred, and odd pictures described special events of importance. In the records of one old tribe there is a rough sketch of a man with explosive-looking lines coming from his mouth. This was the year when a great epidemic of whooping-cough occurred among the Indians, and was the best picture they could think of to represent the terrible cough. Hart's American History Told by Contemporaries (n. Y. 1897 et a work intended to make broad the highways for those who would visit their forefathers. Professor Hart performed a valuable serv ive to the teaching of history in popularizing the use of primary sources, and his reflections upon their place in a general course are fully set forth in his Preface and his Practical Introduction, Vol. I, chaps. I and ii, which are to be read in connection with Section I. In our directions as to the preparation of an historical essay, printed later in this pamphlet, will be found certain remarks on the use of sources in scholarly writing. Side by side with the references to the text and source-book, which must be read, there will be found notations of more detailed narratives and discussions which are recommended as collateral reading. Some One of these books mentioned in each section should be available in the near est public library, and he who hopes here to derive a benefit comparable with that of a first-rate college course must seek them out. On the other hand, it is feasible for those who lack this opportunity to carry on this home study somewhat less extensively and less valuably without them. Book Initial Studies American Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Initial Studies American Letters Classic Reprint written by Henry A. Beers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Initial Studies American Letters This volume, originally published in 1887 as An Out line Sketch of American Literature, and reissued under the present title in 1891, with an appendix consisting of selections from representative American writers, is in tended as a companion to the historical sketch of English literature, entitled From Chaucer to Tennyson, pub lished in 1886 (revised edition for the Chautauqua Circle. It has now (1895) been asecond time revised and supplied with marginal catch-words for convenient refer ence. I have also added a few paragraphs to the final chapter, to bring the subject up to date. In writing it I have followed the same plan, aiming to present the sub jcet' in a sort of continuous essay rather than in the form of a primer or elementary manual. I have not under taken to describe, or even to mention, every American author or book of importance, but only those which seemed to me of most significance. Nevertheless I believe that the sketch contains enough detail to make it of some use as a guide-book to our literature. Though meant to be mainly a history of American belles-lettres, it makes some mention of historical and political writings, but hardly any of philosophical, scientific, and technical works.
