Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Religion: To the Spread of the Universal Religions Short paragraph-style I have written down my conclusions, derived partly from the sources themselves, partly (for no man can be at home everywhere) from the study of what seemed to me the best authorities: and I have added some explanatory remarks and bibliographical notices on the literature of the subject - very short where such notices could easily be found elsewhere, more extensive and as complete as possible where nothing of the kind, so far as I knew, yet existed. Book A History of Religion East and West

Download or read book A History of Religion East and West written by Trevor Ling and published by Springer. This book was released on 1969-01-15 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious traditions of Asia and Europe, the 'East' and 'West' of the title, are sometimes regarded as being in sharp contrast with each other, the one 'mystical', the other 'prophetic'. Whenever their religions are not so contrasted they are usually treated in isolation from each other: the religion of Israel, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Dr Ling, however, stresses that there is considerable overlap and interpenetration between the two types and areas, and that it is important to see the historical inter-relation between these religions and to observe how, during given periods of history, there are parallel developments or significant divergences. He covers the period 1500 B.C. to the present time, providing an outline of the development of Asian and European religious traditions and institutions, and discussing the social and economic factors involved in the development of religous traditions, although he shows that such factors alone do not account for the religious life of man. Dr Ling goes on to interpret the contemporary significance of these religions and their potential for the future life of humanity. He suggests that the present stage of religious advance is characterised by open-endedness towards the future; not all religions exhibit this character, but none has yet exhausted the possibilities of development. This book is intended for use an an introduction to the study of religion. Although reference is made in the text to sources of further information, the book can be used without reference to them.

Book The Abrahamic Religions a Very Short Introduction

Download or read book The Abrahamic Religions a Very Short Introduction written by Charles L. Cohen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of Genesis, God bestows a new name upon Abram--Abraham, a father of many nations. With this name and his Covenant, Abraham would become the patriarch of three of the world's major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Connected by their mutual--if differentiated--veneration of the One God proclaimed by Abraham, these traditions share much beyond their origins in the ancient Israel of the Old Testament. This Very Short Introduction explores the intertwined histories of these monotheistic religions, from the emergence of Christianity and Islam to the violence of the Crusades and the cultural exchanges of al-Andalus. Each religion continues to be shaped by this history but has also reacted to the forces of modernity and politics. Movements such as the Reformation and that led by seventh-century Kharijites have emerged, intentioned to reform or restore traditional religious practice but quite different in their goals and effects. Relationships with states, among them Israel and Saudi Arabia, have also figured importantly in their development. The Abrahamic Religions: A Very Short Introduction brings these traditions together into a common narrative, lending much needed context to the story of Abraham and his descendants. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Book Outlines of the History of Religion

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Religion written by C. P. Tiele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Religion: To the Spread of the Universal Religions What I give in this little book are outlines, pencil-sketches, I might say, - nothing more. In the present state of our knowledge about the ancient religions, this only can be reasonably expected from the students of this branch of science, this only can be attempted with some hope of success. The time for writing an elaborate History of Religion, even of Religions, has not yet come. Not a few special investigations must be instituted, not a few difficult questions elucidated, before anything like this can be done. But it is useful, even necessary, from time to time to sum up the amount of certain knowledge, gathered by the researches of several years, and to sketch, be it here and there with an uncertain hand, the draught of what may at some time become a living picture. This is what I propose to do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
