Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Oration on the Life and Character of Benjamin Franklin: Delivered Before the Franklinian Society of William and Mary College, on the 17th January, 1840 The biographer, it but too often happens, overlooks, what. He considers, the minor traits in the character of those whose lives he would portray so it is with us, gentlemen, when we meet to speak of Franklin. En chanted by those brilliant acts of his more advanced years, which won for him the admiration of all civili zed nations, we forget the days of his youth, and the gradual steps which led to his unparalleled success. We are always disposed to view him clothed in his robes of lightning, whilst. The rolling thunders roar a bove his head, proclaiming his praise to men and an gels. There seems to be a disposition with all men to pass over, without a thought, the humble scenes of life. The gentle beauties of the lowly vale, with most of us, are lost in the gorgeously dyed sunset, or in night's glittering vault. But, to the child of nature, he who is the true Philosopher, there is a loveliness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Typographical Society, on the Occasion of the Birthday of Franklin, at the Printers' Festival, Held January 17, 1849 From being printer to the Assembly, Franklin rose to the office of its Clerk. He was afterwards appointed Postmaster. Of Philadelphia, the duties of which trust he performed to general satisfaction; and at length his fellow-citizens chose him to represent them in the Legislature. This office afforded him an appropriate and conspicuous field for the exercise of his great and brilliant talents. From this period, which was twenty six years before our Declaration of Independence, Franklin probably contributed more, by his wise and prudent counsels, and his public acts and writings, to prepare the people for that great event, than any other public man in our country. Time will not permit us to detail the many great and important measures originated by Franklin dur ing his legislative career. We must not, however, omit to mention, that as, during the period when he was employed in his profession, performing manual labour, he found Opportunity to acquire the knowledge that afterwards gave him eminence as a statesman so also, while faithfully serving the state in many capacities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I cannot remember ever reading a work of history and biography that is quite so fluent, so perfectly composed and balanced . . .” —The New York Sun “Exceptionally rich perspective on one of the most accomplished, complex, and unpredictable Americans of his own time or any other.” —The Washington Post Book World From the most respected chronicler of the early days of the Republic—and winner of both the Pulitzer and Bancroft prizes—comes a landmark work that rescues Benjamin Franklin from a mythology that has blinded generations of Americans to the man he really was and makes sense of aspects of his life and career that would have otherwise remained mysterious. In place of the genial polymath, self-improver, and quintessential American, Gordon S. Wood reveals a figure much more ambiguous and complex—and much more interesting. Charting the passage of Franklin’s life and reputation from relative popular indifference (his death, while the occasion for mass mourning in France, was widely ignored in America) to posthumous glory, The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin sheds invaluable light on the emergence of our country’s idea of itself.

Book The First American

Download or read book The First American written by H. W. Brands and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • Benjamin Franklin, perhaps the pivotal figure in colonial and revolutionary America, comes vividly to life in this “thorough biography of ... America’s first Renaissance man” (The Washington Post) by the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling historian, and author of Our First Civil War. "The authoritative Franklin biography for our time.” —Joseph J. Ellis, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Founding Brothers Wit, diplomat, scientist, philosopher, businessman, inventor, and bon vivant, Benjamin Franklin's "life is one every American should know well, and it has not been told better than by Mr. Brands" (The Dallas Morning News). From penniless runaway to highly successful printer, from ardently loyal subject of Britain to architect of an alliance with France that ensured America’s independence, Franklin went from obscurity to become one of the world’s most admired figures, whose circle included the likes of Voltaire, Hume, Burke, and Kant. Drawing on previously unpublished letters and a host of other sources, acclaimed historian H. W. Brands has written a thoroughly engaging biography of the eighteenth-century genius. A much needed reminder of Franklin’s greatness and humanity, The First American is a work of meticulous scholarship that provides a magnificent tour of a legendary historical figure, a vital era in American life, and the countless arenas in which the protean Franklin left his legacy. Look for H.W. Brands's other biographies: ANDREW JACKSON, THE MAN WHO SAVED THE UNION (Ulysses S. Grant), TRAITOR TO HIS CLASS (Franklin Roosevelt) and REAGAN.
