Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Oration Delivered at Bedford, New-Hampshire, February 22, 1815, at the Request of the Washington Benevolent Society The man, whole name we this day honor, was an exception from mofi of his fellow creatures. Such were the powers and mechanifm of his mind, that he needed not artificial expedients to impel him to the molt generous and ufeful deeds. A love of his country and a fenfe of duty actuat ed his foul. If his liable mind never became giddy by the greatef't applaufe; yet he was not infer fible to the love, the gratitude, and refpeét, which his fellow c1t1zens repeatedly offered him on this day of his nativity. If he was not in different to the afperfions of his enemies; for even Walkington had enemies, yet he never was propelled from his courfe by their virulence. The powers of his great mind were too well balanced to fluctuate on the popular breeze; to rife by applaufe, or finkhy calumny. Often has this day been dillinguiihed with joy on account. Of the birth of lo illufirious a charaé'ter; and once, throughout this nation, has it been clouded with grief and badges of mourning at the te membrance of his death. It is not necelfary to dwell on his charaé'ter. It is well known. The bef't defcription, the highefi eulogy, cannot equal the original. Download or read book Slavery and Politics in the Early American Republic written by Matthew Mason and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giving close consideration to previously neglected debates, Matthew Mason challenges the common contention that slavery held little political significance in America until the Missouri Crisis of 1819. Mason demonstrates that slavery and politics were enmeshed in the creation of the nation, and in fact there was never a time between the Revolution and the Civil War in which slavery went uncontested. The American Revolution set in motion the split between slave states and free states, but Mason explains that the divide took on greater importance in the early nineteenth century. He examines the partisan and geopolitical uses of slavery, the conflicts between free states and their slaveholding neighbors, and the political impact of African Americans across the country. Offering a full picture of the politics of slavery in the crucial years of the early republic, Mason demonstrates that partisans and patriots, slave and free--and not just abolitionists and advocates of slavery--should be considered important players in the politics of slavery in the United States.

Book excerpt: "American constitutional historians and lawyers generally assume that the current doctrine of judicial supremacy not only has always been the rule of constitutional law but was the original intent of the framers of both the federal and state constitutions. This study disproves the validity of that assumption for state constitutionalism by concentrating on the law of New Hampshire - representative of the law in other jurisdictions - between the years 1789 and 1818. This study shows that the reality for the early republic was both judicial dependence and legislative supremacy." "Despite an attempt to subordinate the judiciary to the will of the citizenry, as represented by the state legislature, Reid finds that judges managed to maintain their autonomy, subject only to the dictates of the law."--BOOK JACKET.
