Book Measurement of Particle Size in a Gas particle Flow by an Optical Transmission Test

Download or read book Measurement of Particle Size in a Gas particle Flow by an Optical Transmission Test written by RICHARD A. DOBBINS and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental method of determining the volumeto-surface mean diameter, D32, in a gas-particle flow is described. The method involves the use of an experimental determination of optical transmission and the use of the primary dependence of the average scattering coefficient on D32. An error analysis was performed to show the manner in which errors propagate in the data reduction process. The optical depth due to particles produced in the gas-particle flow resulting from solid propellant rocket motors using metallic fuel additives was found to vary strongly with particle size. The theory is applied to experimental data recently published and the provisional results between actual D32 and the value yielded by transmission tests are considered very encouraging. Instrumentation is described to perform transmission tests on rocket exhaust gases where particles are strong emitters of thermal radiation and where the optical depth of the particle cloud is moderate. Book An Investigation of Particle Size Measurement Using Non Intrusive Optical Techniques in a Gas Turbine Combustor

Download or read book An Investigation of Particle Size Measurement Using Non Intrusive Optical Techniques in a Gas Turbine Combustor written by John S. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigated the use of three-wavelength light transmission and forward-angle scattered light intensity ratio techniques to determine the effects of fuel additives on particle sizes and mass concentrations in a T-63 combustor and evaluated several improvements to the T-63 diagnostic system. Data from both optical methods indicated an increase in particle size in a range of .06 to .10 microns occurred in the exhaust region when the fuel additive was used, with no change in mass concentration. The two techniques resulted in different measured particle sizes and require further investigation. Current improvements to the T-63 diagnostic apparatus are discussed along with required changes for further testing.

Book Optical Particle Sizing

Download or read book Optical Particle Sizing written by Gerard Gouesbet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical particle s1z1ng is undoubtedly a fascinating field of research of the utmost practical importance. In the Universe fluids are nearly everywhere, and when they occur they almost invariably contain particles. Inside our bodies we can take the example of blood transporting a vi tal procession of red and white cells. Around us, we can find various particles in the air we breathe, bubbles in the champagne or the soda we drink, or natural and artificial (polluting!) particles in the lakes we swim in. Industrial processes and systems are also concerned with particles, from pulverized coal flames to fluidized beds, in a range of applications involving rocket exhausts, pneuma tic transport and more generally the infinite realm of mul tiphase situations. Such an obviously vast field would require a whole volume like this one merely to attempt to describe it superficially. To be sure, we would need a scientific Prevert to catalogue such an endless inventory. Finally, even outside our terrestrial spaceship particles can be detected in alien atmospheres or between stars. Theorists will enjoy analyzing the richness of light/particle interact. ion, a subject which is very far from being exhausted. Experimental researchers will love designing and studying various probing instruments with a laser source at the input and a computer at the output, two requisites of today' s technological revolution.

Book Optical Nano and Microsystems for Bioanalytics

Download or read book Optical Nano and Microsystems for Bioanalytics written by Wolfgang Fritzsche and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the state of the art in the field of bioanalytical nano- and microsystems with optical functionality. In 12 chapters distinguished scientists and leaders in their respective fields show how various optical technologies have been miniaturized and integrated over the last few decades in order to be combined with nano- and microsystems for applications in the life sciences. The main detection and characterization technologies are introduced, and examples of the superiority of these integrated approaches compared to traditional ones are provided. Examples from e.g. the fields of optical waveguides, integrated interferometers, surface plasmon resonance or Raman spectroscopy are introduced and discussed, and it is shown how these approaches have led to novel functionalities and thereby novel applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of a two-week NATO A.S.I. on "Analytical Laser Spectroscopy", held from September 23 to October 3, 1982 in Erice, Italy. This is the 9th annual course of Inter national School of Quantum Electronics organized under the auspices of the "E. Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. The Advanced Study Institute has been devoted to the analytical applications of lasers in spectroscopy. Atomic and molecular spec troscopy is one of the research fields in which the use of lasers has had a dramatic impact. New spectral information, difficult or impos sible to gather by classical spectroscopy, extremely high resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules made possible by the overcoming of the Doppler effect, selective excitation and detection of single atomic and molecular quantum states are just few typical examples of how laser sources have revolutionized the field, offering challenging problems of both fundamental and applied nature. Among the possible approaches to a course on Analytical Laser Spectroscopy, the one which emphasizes the scientific and technologi cal aspects of the advanced laser techniques when applied to chemical analysis has been chosen. In fact, it reflects the new policy of the School to stress the advanced scientific and technological achieve ments in the field of Quantum Electronics. Accordingly, the course has given the broadest information on the ultimate performances of analytical laser spectroscopy techniques and the perspectives of their applications.
