Download or read book An Open Letter to English Gentlemen Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Open Letter to English Gentlemen Gentlemen, I am addressing you by the most honourable of titles; and for reasons which I hope to make plain am using that title in the present instance in its restricted sense. That is to say, that while I am on the one hand excluding from my purview all such as have inherited merely the accidentals of your order, an ample fortune, an honoured name, a more or less perfunctory code fulfilled in the letter rather than in the spirit, I am at the same time excluding the many men whose shoes so often you are not worthy to loose, men who have the essential stuff of the gentlemen in them, but have inherited nothing - not fortune nor privilege, nor caste alliances nor unfettered opportunity, nor the natural mould of culture, but have won what they have won by their own force of character or ability. Book A Letter to a Young Gentleman of Oxford Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Letter to a Young Gentleman of Oxford Classic Reprint written by Edward Bentham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to a Young Gentleman of Oxford It may not be improper to assure the Reader, that the Occasion of putting together these Reflexions, which are now revised and offer'd to the Publick, was entirely distinct from the late treasonable Disturbance in Oxford. With a View however to this, as well as the Affair with which he was himself more particularly concerned, the Writer of them did not think it misbecame him, to provide some Antidote for the Use of his Pupils, whenever an Attempt should be made to tamper with their Principles, and withdraw them from their Obedience to the Laws of the Land. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of the Gentleman The students of Miami University, in the State of Ohio, did me the honor of inviting me, during the past summer, to deliver an address on the even ing before their Commencement Day. I had never visited that teeming region of the spreading West, and gladly accepted the invitation. The address was printed, according to custom, and I was fur nished with a liberal supply of copies, not sufficient, however, to satisfy all persons who seemed desirous of perusing it. Repeated prepositions to republish it were made; but they would not have induced me to venture upon a second edition of so fugitive a composition, had not some trustees and many stu dents of our own institution desired me to do it. Book The Image of the English Gentleman in Twentieth Century Literature

Download or read book The Image of the English Gentleman in Twentieth Century Literature written by Dr Christine Berberich and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the English gentleman have tended to focus mainly on the nineteenth century, encouraging the implicit assumption that this influential literary trope has less resonance for twentieth-century literature and culture. Christine Berberich challenges this notion by showing that the English gentleman has proven to be a remarkably adaptable and relevant ideal that continues to influence not only literature but other forms of representation, including the media and advertising industries. Focusing on Siegfried Sassoon, Anthony Powell, Evelyn Waugh and Kazuo Ishiguro, whose presentations of the gentlemanly ideal are analysed in their specific cultural, historical, and sociological contexts, Berberich pays particular attention to the role of nostalgia and its relationship to 'Englishness'. Though 'Englishness' and by extension the English gentleman continue to be linked to depictions of England as the green and pleasant land of imagined bygone days, Berberich counterbalances this perception by showing that the figure of the English gentleman is the medium through which these authors and many of their contemporaries critique the shifting mores of contemporary society. Twentieth-century depictions of the gentleman thus have much to tell us about rapidly changing conceptions of national, class, and gender identity.

Book English Men of Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Men of Letters Classic Reprint written by James Cotter Morison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters I know you write with great ease to yourself, and would rather write ten poems than prune one. All your pieces are much mended after a little reflection; therefore, take your solitary walks and think over each separate thing. Spare no time or trouble, and render each piece as perfect as you can, and then leave the event without one anxious thought. I have always admired a saying of one of the old heathen philosophers when a friend was condoling with him that he so well deserved of the gods, and yet they did not shower their favours on him as on some others less worthy, he answered, I will continue to deserve well of them. So do you, my dearest. Deep, sober, clear - eyed love watched over Macaulay's childhood. His mother lived long enough to see her son on the high road to honour and fame, and died almost immediately after he had made his first great speech on the Reform Bill in 1831. His father, Zachary, was a man cast in an heroic mould, who reproduced, one might surmise, the moral features of some stern old Scotch Covenanter among his ancestors, and never quite fitted into the age in which it was his lot to live. There was a latent faculty in him which, in spite of his long and laborious life, he was never able completely to unfold. A silent, austere, earnest, patient, enduring man. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE PEN/FAULKNER AWARD • The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Pastoral delivers “a master novelist's haunting parable about our troubled modern moment" (The Wall Street Journal). It is 1998, the year in which America is whipped into a frenzy of prurience by the impeachment of a president, and in a small New England town, an aging classics professor, Coleman Silk, is forced to retire when his colleagues decree that he is a racist. The charge is a lie, but the real truth about Silk would have astonished even his most virulent accuser. Coleman Silk has a secret, one which has been kept for fifty years from his wife, his four children, his colleagues, and his friends, including the writer Nathan Zuckerman. It is Zuckerman who stumbles upon Silk's secret and sets out to reconstruct the unknown biography of this eminent, upright man, esteemed as an educator for nearly all his life, and to understand how this ingeniously contrived life came unraveled. And to understand also how Silk's astonishing private history is, in the words of The Wall Street Journal, "magnificently" interwoven with "the larger public history of modern America."
