Book An Open graded Friction Course on Portland Cement Concrete Base

Download or read book An Open graded Friction Course on Portland Cement Concrete Base written by William P. Chamberlin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes performance of a 1-in. thick open-friction-course (OFC) bituminous overlay on an existing concrete pavement, and an adjacent conventional 2 1/2-in. thick dense-graded bituminous overlay placed as a control. The pavements were evaluated after 7 years of service by analyzing core samples for aggregrate degradation, changes in mix density and voids content, and changes in asphalt hardness. Also, pavement surfaces were inspected periodically for cracking, raveling and debonding, texture, friction properties, and rutting. Results indicate that after 7 years the control pavement is in better physical condition than the OFC, but that the latter continues to provide better drainage of surface water and better friction. Of particular significance are the OFC's substantially more favorable smooth-tire friction and friction number-speed gradients.

Book Performance Characteristics of Open graded Friction Courses

Download or read book Performance Characteristics of Open graded Friction Courses written by Harry A. Smith and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to construction, maintenance, pavement design, and materials engineers, pavement contractors, and others interested in the use of open-graded friction courses (OGFC) as an asphalt concrete pavement wearing surface. Information is provided on performance benefits and limitations of OGFC, material and mixture properties, and current construction practices in use in the United States and Europe. Advances in mixture design and construction techniques have overcome several of the performance limitations identified in early applications of OGFC, as well as enhanced the performance benefits associated with OGFC use. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of OGFC. Experience with the design, construction, and performance of OGFC is summarized, based on a review of the literature, documentation of experience from applications in the U.S. and Europe, and site visits to several states.

Book Performance Survey on Open graded Friction Course Mixes

Download or read book Performance Survey on Open graded Friction Course Mixes written by Gerald Huber and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2000 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement construction, maintenance, design, and materials engineers; pavement contractors; and others interested in the use of open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixes. It describes the current state of the practice on the use of OGFC mixes, including information regarding design, materials, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation strategies. Alternative treatments to traditional OGFC are also identified and discussed. Information was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search to gather additional insight into North American and European practices. This TRB report describes the recent performance of North American OGFC mixes and European porous asphalt by identifying benefits and stress indicators. A new generation of OGFC mixes has evolved over the last 5 years with changes that have been reported to dramatically improve performance. This synthesis describes new materials and design methods being used, as well as the applicability of the new generation of open-graded mixtures to North American use.

Book Performance of Open graded Friction Courses

Download or read book Performance of Open graded Friction Courses written by Richard W. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents installation and evaluation of an experimental pavement using an open-graded asphalt friction course, placed as part of the FHWA's Demonstration project 10. Two different open-graded mixes -- one having a maximum aggregate size of 1/2-in and the other 1/4-in -- and a standard NYS 1A top mix were evaluated. Performance of the experimental pavement was determined by measuring air-void content, asphalt cement penetration and viscosity, skid resistance, rutting, and noise, and by visual observations of water drainage and splash and spray by passing traffic in wet weather. Results showed that the open-graded pavements performed better than the standard NYS 1A top.

Book Design of Open graded Asphalt Friction Courses

Download or read book Design of Open graded Asphalt Friction Courses written by R. W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to improve pavement skid resistance have shown the advantages of using open-graded asphalt paving mixtures. The concept used is that the open-graded asphalt friction course consists predominantly of a narrowly-graded coarse aggregate fraction with a sufficiently high interstitial void capacity to provide for a relatively high asphalt content, a high air void content, and a relatively small fraction of fine mixture while the fine aggregate fraction acts as a filler and imparts a "chocking action" to stabilize the coarse aggregate. The high asphalt content provides for mixture durability and the high air void content provides for adequate subsurface water drainage. The described method is relatively new, but has been used successfully on several FHWA, R & D Demonstration Projects.

Book Wet pavement Safety Programs

Download or read book Wet pavement Safety Programs written by S. H. Dahir and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement engineers, safety officers, and others interested in wet-pavement safety programs. Information is provided on the programs used by a number of agencies in gathering data and correcting areas of potential wet-weather accidents. Wet-pavement accidents continue to be of concern to highway agencies. This report of the Transportation Research Board summarizes agencies' programs in areas such as accident reporting, vehicle testing, friction testing, corrective actions for problem areas, and tort liability and gives some general guidelines for the content of a wet-pavement safety program.
