Book An Old Indian Village Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Old Indian Village Classic Reprint written by Johan August Udden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Indian Village The average American has a scientific instinct, which he is fond of cultivating wherever he be. Many farmers, merchant, and professional men in the West are making small collections of Indian relies. Should this paper come into the hands of collectors or students of the class, I hope that it may whet their appetite for more and better literature of the same kind. I also hope that it may aid and encourage them in their efforts to study and to take care of the antiquities found in their own immediate vicinity. To do this is at the same time their particular privilege and their special duty to the cause of science. To former pupils, fellow teachers, and others who aided in making the explorations on Paint creek I extend my thanks and my greetings of most pleasant recollections. In particular I keep in grateful remembrance the kindly interest, aid, and valuable advise always freely bestowed by the venerable pioneer and scientist Dr. John Rundstrom, formerly of McPherson county, Kansas. For special aid in preparing the paper I am under obligations to Dr. C. A. Sirensson, president of Bethany College, to Professor Frank Nelson, Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State of Kansas, and to Professor J. E. Welin of Bethany College. The photograph for the illustrations were, with one exception, made by Mr. B. G. Grondahl of Lindsborg, Kansas, and figure 6 and 27 were drawn by Professor Olof Grafstrom of Rock Island, Ill. Download or read book Down Among the Crackers Classic Reprint written by Rosa Pendleton Chiles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Down Among the Crackers Though the village, Walesca, has real geographical significance and the old college on the hill is the Rome to which all roads of the section lead, it must not by any means be thought that all, or indeed, any personages in the book have real existence here. Some, ready to draw analogies as well between the characters of a novel and men and women who move in the daily course of life as between Alpine and Rocky mountain scenery, may, indeed, tell me they recognize in one or another a neighbor, an old friend, a student of the college, or some one of whom they have heard; but I, my dear readers, who have known these children of my brain longer than you, fail to identify them with any of the folks of the section. They may indeed possess characteristics known to you in some residents of Cherokee, buti could as well point you to owners of the same in a half dozen other countries or states, for that matter. These characters are in part, of a composite type, possessing qualities not so much of individuals known to you and me as of the class delineated. Whether dwellers in the Empire State of the South, or elsewhere; yet in larger part, they are citizens of the more mystic realm of the imagination, adapted to the genuine life of the class de scribed, and that they have taken up their abode in this old Indian village, under the shadow of Pine Log, and under the powerful influences of modern intellectual ism, is a compliment to the place, for they bad choice of many another in which to live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians The summer of 1864 marked a period of unusual peril to the daring pioneers seeking homes in the far West. Following upon the horrible massacres in Minnesota in 1862, and the subsequent chastisements inflicted by the expeditions under Generals Sully and Sibley in 1863, whereby the Indians were driven from the then western borders of civilization, in Iowa, Minnesota, and the white settlements of Dakota, in the Missouri Valley, the great emigrant trails to Idaho and Montana became the scene of fresh outrages; and, from the wild, almost inaccessible nature of the country, pursuit and punishment were impossible. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Growth of Village Communities in India It cannot be necessary to write a formal preface to so small a book. But I may be allowed to make use of the space for two purposes. First, I have to express my thanks to Prof. W. J. Ashley, M.A., of Harvard University, and late Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, not only for the suggestion that a short account of the Indian village should be written, but for valuable advice and criticism in the course of writing it. Secondly, I have to say a few words about the (not very frequent) Indian words (Hindi, Persian, etc.) which occur. I have avoided them wherever I could; but sometimes they are needed for the sake of readers in India, or because there is no satisfactory equivalent; partly also because they show that the thing indicated is, or is not, indigenous; that it has been borrowed from the Moslems, or is an older Hindu institution. Now, the only tolerable way in which such words can be given in print, is by transliterating into Roman character; and people then say "we do not know how they should be pronounced." But for practical purposes, it is quite easy to pronounce Indian words at least intelligibly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Old Kansas Indian Town on the Missouri Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Old Kansas Indian Town on the Missouri Classic Reprint written by George J. Remsburg and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Kansas Indian Town on the Missouri Centuries ago mention was made by the French explorers of the large or main village of the "Quans" on the southwest bank of the Missouri river, about thirty leagues above the mouth of the "Quans" river. The Quans were the Kansa or Konza Indians from whom the state of Kansas derived its name. They were visited by De Bourgmont, in 1724, while on his famous expedition to the Padoucas. The exact location of this noted old village of Bourgmont's time, heretofore, has never been definitely determined, although the ruins of the old town on the Missouri were observed and mentioned by explorers and travelers for many years subsequent to the early French explorations. Professor Dunbar apparently, authentically, has designated Atchison, Kansas as the site of the old village, while Kansas historians generally evade the question by vaguely referring to the old Kaw village "at" or "near the present site of Atchison, which is based merely on an approximation of the distance above the Kansas and Little Platte rivers, without taking into consideration the topographical and other features so essential in determining such matters. After carefully studying all available data bearing on the subject, including the chronicles of most of the early explorers who mention the old village, and thoroughly examining the whole region along the Missouri river north of the Kansas, I have concluded that the historic old town of Doniphan, five miles north of the city of Atchison, was the prehistoric capital of the Kaws. The historical, topographical and archaeological evidence adequately sustains such an opinion. Before going into details I will succinctly give a few of the more important reasons for my belief that the old Kansas village was so located. First - Doniphan corresponds approximately with the distances that the early explorers place the old village above the Kansas and Little Platte rivers, and other definite points on the Missouri. Second - Lewis and Clark, and other explorers, who saw the remains of the old town explicitly state that it was a mile, or a little above Independence creek. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ramazan the Rajah Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ramazan, the Rajah The paved streets and houses of stone and brick, some finely designed, including the old palace of the peishwas now converted for modern use, raised Poona far above an Indian village, and yet it was far less advanced, far more Eastern and native than Bombay. Nearly every breed of brown and yellow foreigner could be met there and over forty languages and dialects were known to be spoken in the bazaars. The motley gathering of people who moved about the streets, the murmur, the clamour, the mingling of strange sounds, and, above all, the vivid, ever-changing colours, were distinctly of the East. Of the people, Indians, Afghans, and Europeans, who hurried or sauntered in the streets and byways. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Indian T was somewhere in the seventies when old Peaceful Hart woke to a realization that gold-hunting and Iumbago do not take kindly to one another, and the fact that his pipe and dim-eyed meditation appealed to him more keenly than did his prospector's pick and shovel and pan seemed to imply that he was growing old. He was a silent man, by occupation and by nature, so he said nothing about it; but, like the wild things of prairie and wood, instinctively began preparing for the winter of his life. Where he had lately been wash ing tentatively the sand along Snake River, he built a ranch. His prospector's tools he used in digging ditches to irrigate his new-made meadows, and his mining days he lived over again only in halting recital to his sons when they clamored for details of the old days when the Indians were not mere untidy neighbors to be gos siped with and fed, but enemies to be fought, upon occasion. They live in her villages where they cultivate their fields as their ancestors have done before them, generation after generation for a thousand years; They are hard-working folk, sturdy and withal attractive. Today, even these stolid villagers are being awakened from their age-long sleep. There is nothing more interesting in India than the way that these people are beginning to play a real part in the life of the land. Once I was suggesting to a city Brahman that the farm ers had shrewd opinions which every leader must respect. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
