Excerpt: ...Winchester and Snyder rifles had destroyed this long before the time of the Austrian occupation. Upon the other side of Dubovatz, the valley begins to rise rapidly and to contract until it nearly forms a pass, bordered on the left by the Dubova Mountains; on the right, by the Gradatz; the latter a bold, rocky mountain of Herzegovinan type, with a wealth of caves and jagged cliffs. The township of the same name is pressed into a narrow angle to the right of the road. After a mile and a half, the valley widens again; another rivulet, the Krupatz, coming Turkish watchhouse. from the south-east, flows into the Zujevina; and, after a short bend, the basin of Pasaritsh lies before us, surrounded by picturesque hills, and upon whose western border the township of Pasaritsh itself stands, in the midst of agricultural fields. At the military station here a Roman tombstone has been preserved, which is about two metres high and four wide; a bust of the dead in a toga, between Corinthian pillars, which support a triangular gable decorated with the head of a ram and a dolphin. Between similar pillars, below the portrait, is an inscription already entirely obliterated. The bare mass of the Hranitzava-Planina rises menacingly in the background six thousand two hundred metres above the level of the sea, a mountain celebrated from its magnificent appearance. The valley is shut in by the mountain ridge of Vilovatz; and, leaving the 2ujevina, our way now lay over this ridge, and down the other side to Tartshin, where we changed horses for the first time. A beautiful sylvan idyl. At Tartshin we crossed a smaller brook, which flows from the south directly northwards. Upon the left, we constantly saw the Hranitzava-Planina. Our road lay to the south-west, ...

Download or read book Whose Bosnia written by Edin Hajdarpasic and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Edin Hajdarpasic shows, formative contestations over Bosnia and the surrounding region began well the assassination that triggered World War I, emerging with the rise of new nineteenth-century forces—Serbian and Croatian nationalisms, and Ottoman, Habsburg, Muslim, and Yugoslav political movements—that claimed this province as their own. Whose Bosnia? reveals the political pressures and moral arguments that made Bosnia a prime target of escalating nationalist activity. Hajdarpasic provides new insight into central themes of modern politics, illuminating core subjects like "the people," state-building, and national suffering. Whose Bosnia? proposes a new figure in the history of nationalism: the (br)other, a character signifying the potential of being "brother" and "Other," containing the fantasy of complete assimilation and insurmountable difference. By bringing this figure into focus, Whose Bosnia? shows nationalism to be a dynamic and open-ended force, one that eludes a clear sense of historical closure.

Book The Bosnian Muslims

Download or read book The Bosnian Muslims written by Francine Friedman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although their plight now dominates television news worldwide, the Bosnian Muslims were until recently virtually unknown outside of Yugoslavia. This meticulously researched, comprehensive book traces the turbulent history of the Bosnian Muslims and shows how their mixed secular and religious identity has shaped the conflict in which they are now so tragically embroiled. Although their plight now dominates television news worldwide, the Bosnian Muslims were until recently virtually unknown outside of Yugoslavia. Who are these people? Why are they the focus of their former neighbors rage? What role did they play in Yugoslavia before they became the victims of ethnic cleansing? Why has Bosnia-Hercegovina, once a model of ethnic tolerance and multicultural harmony, suddenly exploded into ethnic violence?Focusing on these questions, Friedman provides a comprehensive study of this national group whose plight has riveted governments, the press, and the public alike. With a name reflecting both their religious and their national identity, the Bosnian Muslims are unique in Europe as indigenous Slavic Muslims. Descendants of schismatic Christians from the Middle Ages, they converted to Islam after the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia. The book follows them as they went from victims of crusades during the Middle Ages to members of the ruling elite within the Ottoman Empire; from rulers back to subjects under Austria-Hungary; and later subjects again, this time under the Serbs in the interwar Yugoslav Kingdom and the Communists after World War II. The Bosnian Muslims have survived through it all, even thriving during certain periods, most notably when they were recognized by Tito as a nation.Meticulously tracing their turbulent history and assessing the issues surrounding Bosnian Muslim nationhood in Yugoslavia, Friedman shows us how the mixed secular and religious identity of the Bosnian Muslims has shaped the conflict in which they are now so tragically embroiled.

Book A Bibliography of East European Travel Writing on Europe

Download or read book A Bibliography of East European Travel Writing on Europe written by Wendy Bracewell and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-10 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bibliography volume of the three-volume East Looks West: East European Travel Writing in Europe collates travel writing published in book form by east Europeans travelling in Europe from ca. 1550 to 2000. It is intended as a fundamental research tool, collecting together travel writings within each national/linguistic tradition, and enabling comparative analysis of such material. It fills an important gap in the existing reference literature, both in western and east European languages, and will be of use to those working in the growing fields of comparative travel writing, regional and national identities, and postcolonialism. These texts exist in surprisingly large numbers, and include writings of high literary quality as well as of historical interest, but they have been relatively little studied as a genre. Much of this material is rare and difficult to find, even in national libraries. As a result, there are few bibliographical surveys of the literature of east European travel and self-representation, and none that are region-wide or comparative in scope. This is the third volume of a three-part set of East Looks West, Vol. 1 - An Anthology of East European Travel Writing on Europe; and Vol. 2 - A Comparative Introduction to East European Travel Writing on Europe.

Book Balkan Worlds The First and Last Europe

Download or read book Balkan Worlds The First and Last Europe written by Traian Stoianovich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing the period from the Neolithic era to the troubled present, this book studies the peoples, societies and cultures of the area situated between the Adriatic Sea in the west and the Black Sea in the east, between the Alpine region and Danube basin in the north and the Aegean Sea in the south. This is not a conventional history of the Balkans. Drawing upon archaeology, anthropology, economics, psychology and linguistics as well as history, the author has attempted a "total history" that integrates as many as possible of the avenues and categories of the Balkan experience.
