Book Mystical Origins of the Tarot

Download or read book Mystical Origins of the Tarot written by Paul Huson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-05-26 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profusely illustrated history of the occult nature of the tarot from its origins in ancient Persia • Thoroughly examines the original historical source for each tarot card and how the cards’ divinatory meanings evolved from these symbols • Provides authentic 18th- and 19th-century spreads and divination techniques • Reveals the divinatory meanings of the cards as understood by diviners in the Middle Ages and Renaissance The origins of the tarot have been lost in the mists of time. Most scholars have guessed that its origins were in China, Egypt, or India. In Mystical Origins of the Tarot, Paul Huson has expertly tracked each symbol of the Minor Arcana to roots in ancient Persia and the Major Arcana Trump card images to the medieval world of mystery, miracle, and morality plays. A number of tarot historians have questioned the use of the tarot as a divination tool prior to the 18th century. But the author demonstrates that the symbolic meanings of the Major Arcana were evident from the time they were first employed in the mid-15th century in the popular divination practice of sortilege. He also reveals how the identities of the court cards in the Minor Arcana were derived from a blend of pagan and medieval sources that strongly influenced their interpretation in tarot divination. Mystical Origins of the Tarot provides a thorough examination of the original historical source for each card and how the cards’ divinatory meanings evolved from these symbols. Huson also provides concise and practical card-reading methods designed by the cartomancers of the 18th and 19th centuries and reveals the origins of the card interpretations promoted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and A. E. Waite.

Book Understanding Aleister Crowley s Thoth Tarot

Download or read book Understanding Aleister Crowley s Thoth Tarot written by Lon Milo DuQuette and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2003-11-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot was his final opus, the culmination of a lifetime of occult study and practice. With artist Lady Frieda Harris, he condensed the core of his teaching - astrology, Qabbalah, magick, gematria and numerology, and alchemy- into the 78 cards of the tarot. Although Crowley's own Book of Thoth provides insight into the cards, it is a complicated, dated book. What has been missing, and what Crowley authority Lon Milo DuQuette has created, is an introductory text for the deck. In clear language, DuQuette provides everything you need to know about Crowley's fundamental principles to get the most out of using the Thoth deck. Many use the deck simply because the artwork is so beautiful, but there is so much more to it than that. DuQuette starts with the basic historical background of this extremely popular deck before delving into descriptions of each card in depth, from both a purely tarot perspective and from an expanded, magickal point of view. Each card is described in detail regarding its straight tarot meaning, which is then expanded upon with all the other attributions Crowley intended. This unique guide will be of great interest to all tarot readers who use the Thoth Tarot- especially those looking for correspondences with other occult systems to enhance their readings- and will be treasured by students of Aleister Crowley's works.

Download or read book Easy Guide to the Tarot written by Dayanara Blue Star and published by Dayanara Blue Star. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tarot is a pack of 78 playing cards used by mystics and occultists for foretelling the future as well as for giving you a peek into your spiritual and mental pathway. Tarot cards have existed since the mid-15th century in various parts of the European continent. However, at that point it was basically used to play card games, such as French tarot or the Italian tarocchini. The word itself is derived from the Italian word "tarocchi", a word which has no known origin. Some believe that the word is related to the Taro River in northern Italy. Others believe that the word originated from an Arabic word, "turuq", which means "ways". The cards seem to have come from Mamluk, Egypt in the 14th century. At that point in time, the suits were Staves, Cups, Coins and Swords; quite similar to the suits that exist these days. In Europe, the first tarot card deck was created in Milan, Ferrara and Bologna in northern Italy. This was between the years 1430 and 1450. The original purpose of the tarot was to play games. In the 18th century, the tarot began to be used for divination purposes. Manuscripts from the era reveal that there was a specific way of laying out the cards and there was a divinatory meaning associated with each card. The tarot has four suits, but this can vary depending on the region. Jean-Baptiste Alliette, popularly known as Etteilla, was the first to create a tarot deck especially for the purposes of divination. This 78-card deck has two distinct parts. Take advantage of this great opportunity to understand the tarot quickly and easily!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential volume for the libraries of all serious students of the Tarot. When the Tarot was invented in Italy during the early fifteenth century, it was simply a pack of cards used for playing games. Esoteric interpretations of the pack date from late eighteenth century France, and were confined to that country for a hundred years. But today the cards are used throughout the world and not only for fortune telling - for true believers they are the key to secret knowledge and the meaning of life. A History of the Occult Tarot is the classic work on the history of the Tarot deck and its use in occult circles. Starting with the late nineteenth century, the Decker and Dummett examine how the Tarot became the favoured divination tool of occultists, a bridge to the spirit world, and a map of the unconscious. From Theosophical to Aleister Crowley to the Order of the Golden Dawn and P.D. Ouspensky, this compelling survey of the Tarot's history describes the many fascinating decks imagined over time as well as the secret histories of mystics.
