An Oboe dAmore Concerto (Graun WV Cv:XIII:108) by Johann Gottlieb Graun: A Scholarly Performance Edition. Major Professor: Dr. Michelle Vigneau. In addition to bringing an early Classical era work for the oboe damore into the repertoire, this document is a modern edition and scholarly guide to performance practices based on the only known physical manuscript of the Concerto in D Major for Oboe damore and Strings by Johann Gottlieb Graun, housed at the National Music and Theater Library of Sweden in Stockholm. (Graun WV Cv:XIII:108, RISM #190010969).The first chapter is introductory in nature, presenting the importance of this document, biographical and geographical information, and J.G. Grauns education and employment history of positions within the Kingdom of Prussia, and the court of Frederick the Great. Succeeding chapters present relevant information regarding manuscript details, performance practice, the Berlin School of the time, a brief visual analysis of score and form, in addition to practical oboe damore details. The appendices offer a critical, Finale edition of the concerto, complete with score and parts. In order to expand the literature, there is an English horn arrangement, transposed to remain in the original concert pitch..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays, by the leading German musicologist of our day, on one of the most controversial and influential composers of our century: Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg is considered here as a historical figure, as a thinker and theoretician and as a composer whose works may be subjected to technical analysis and/or examined in relation to the history of ideas. Above all, he is considered in the context of the 'New Music', the historical and cultural movement of the first two decades of this century which embrace musicians such as Webern, Schreker and Scriabin (all of whom are allotted individual essays), as well as Schoenberg himself. In addition to historical and analytical essays there are essays of a broader cultural-historical and even sociological import which should interest all those involved with twentieth-century music and ideas.

Download or read book Histories of Heinrich Sch tz written by Bettina Varwig and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bettina Varwig places the music of the celebrated Dresden composer Heinrich Schütz in a richly detailed tapestry of cultural, political, religious and intellectual contexts. Four key events in Schütz's career - the 1617 Reformation centenary, the performance of his Dafne in 1627, the 1636 funeral composition Musikalische Exequien and the publication of his motet collection Geistliche Chormusik (1648) - are used to explore his music's resonances with broader historical themes, including the effects of the Thirty Years' War, contemporary meanings of classical mythology, Lutheran attitudes to death and the afterlife as well as shifting conceptions of time and history in light of early modern scientific advances. These original seventeenth-century circumstances are treated in counterpoint with Schütz's fascinating later reinvention in nineteenth- and twentieth-century German musical culture, providing a new kind of musicological writing that interweaves layers of historical inquiry from the seventeenth century to the present day.
