Book An Objective Theory of Probability Routledge Revivals

Download or read book An Objective Theory of Probability Routledge Revivals written by Donald Gillies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissue of D. A. Gillies highly influential work, first published in 1973, is a philosophical theory of probability which seeks to develop von Mises’ views on the subject. In agreement with von Mises, the author regards probability theory as a mathematical science like mechanics or electrodynamics, and probability as an objective, measurable concept like force, mass or charge. On the other hand, Dr Gillies rejects von Mises’ definition of probability in terms of limiting frequency and claims that probability should be taken as a primitive or undefined term in accordance with modern axiomatic approaches. This of course raises the problem of how the abstract calculus of probability should be connected with the ‘actual world of experiments’. It is suggested that this link should be established, not by a definition of probability, but by an application of Popper’s concept of falsifiability. In addition to formulating his own interesting theory, Dr Gillies gives a detailed criticism of the generally accepted Neyman Pearson theory of testing, as well as of alternative philosophical approaches to probability theory. The reissue will be of interest both to philosophers with no previous knowledge of probability theory and to mathematicians interested in the foundations of probability theory and statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Creating a rigorous mathematical theory of randomness is far from being complete, even in the classical case. Interrelation of Classical and Quantum Randomness rectifies this and introduces mathematical formalisms of classical and quantum probability and randomness with brief discussion of their interrelation and interpretational and foundational issues. The book presents the essentials of classical approaches to randomness, enlightens their successes and problems, and then proceeds to essentials of quantum randomness. Its wide-ranging and comprehensive scope makes it suitable for researchers in mathematical physics, probability and statistics at any level"--

This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of C. D. Broad have affected the work of moral philosophers throughout the twentieth century to the present day. First published in 1971, this edited volume contains Broad’s best essays on the philosophical problems of Ethics, mostly written and published between 1914 and 1964. Among the essays are Broad’s important critiques of G. E. Moore’s ethical theory, his lecture entitled ‘Determinism, Indeterminism and Libertarianism’, and other pieces discussing topics as broad as Conscience, Egoism and Free Will. This reissue serves as an important companion to Broad’s other works, a number of which have also been reissued within the Routledge Library Editions series, and will be invaluable to students interested in Broad’s theories and twentieth-century philosophical thought.

Book Theories of Probability

Download or read book Theories of Probability written by Terrence L. Fine and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of Probability: An Examination of Foundations reviews the theoretical foundations of probability, with emphasis on concepts that are important for the modeling of random phenomena and the design of information processing systems. Topics covered range from axiomatic comparative and quantitative probability to the role of relative frequency in the measurement of probability. Computational complexity and random sequences are also discussed. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with an introduction to different types of probability theories, followed by a detailed account of axiomatic formalizations of comparative and quantitative probability and the relations between them. Subsequent chapters focus on the Kolmogorov formalization of quantitative probability; the common interpretation of probability as a limit of the relative frequency of the number of occurrences of an event in repeated, unlinked trials of a random experiment; an improved theory for repeated random experiments; and the classical theory of probability. The book also examines the origin of subjective probability as a by-product of the development of individual judgments into decisions. Finally, it suggests that none of the known theories of probability covers the whole domain of engineering and scientific practice. This monograph will appeal to students and practitioners in the fields of mathematics and statistics as well as engineering and the physical and social sciences.

Book An Introduction to the Theory of Probability

Download or read book An Introduction to the Theory of Probability written by Parimal Mukhopadhyay and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Probability is a major tool that can be used to explain and understand the various phenomena in different natural, physical and social sciences. This book provides a systematic exposition of the theory in a setting which contains a balanced mixture of the classical approach and the modern day axiomatic approach. After reviewing the basis of the theory, the book considers univariate distributions, bivariate normal distribution, multinomial distribution and convergence of random variables. Difficult ideas have been explained lucidly and have been augmented with explanatory notes, examples and exercises. The basic requirement for reading this book is simply a knowledge of mathematics at graduate level. This book tries to explain the difficult ideas in the axiomatic approach to the theory of probability in a clear and comprehensible manner. It includes several unusual distributions including the power series distribution that have been covered in great detail. Readers will find many worked-out examples and exercises with hints, which will make the book easily readable and engaging. The author is a former Professor of the Indian Statistical Institute, India.

Book The Search for Certainty

Download or read book The Search for Certainty written by Krzysztof Burdzy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a radical departure from the current philosophical duopoly in the area of foundations of probability, that is, the frequency and subjective theories. One of the main new ideas is a set of scientific laws of probability. The new laws are simple, intuitive and, last but not least, they agree well with the contents of current textbooks on probability. Another major new claim is that the ?frequency statistics? has nothing in common with the ?frequency philosophy of probability,? contrary to popular belief. Similarly, contrary to the general perception, the ?Bayesian statistics? shares nothing in common with the ?subjective philosophy of probability.? This volume is non-partisan on the scientific side ? that it is supportive of both frequency statistics and Bayesian statistics. On the other hand, it contains well-documented and thoroughly-explained criticisms of the frequency and subjective philosophies of probability. Short reviews of other philosophical theories of probability and basic mathematical methods of probability and statistics are incorporated. This volume includes essential chapters on decision theory and teaching probability, and it is easily accessible to the general audience.

Book Theory of Probability

Download or read book Theory of Probability written by Boris V. Gnedenko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-05-13 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth edition of a classic text that was first published in 1950 in the former Soviet Union. The clear presentation of the subject and extensive applications supported with real data helped establish the book as a standard for the field. To date, it has been published into more that ten languages and has gone through five editions. The sixth edition is a major revision over the fifth. It contains new material and results on the Local Limit Theorem, the Integral Law of Large Numbers, and Characteristic Functions. The new edition retains the feature of developing the subject from intuitive concepts and demonstrating techniques and theory through large numbers of examples. The author has, for the first time, included a brief history of probability and its development. Exercise problems and examples have been revised and new ones added.
