Book Edith and Florence Stoney Sisters in Radiology

Download or read book Edith and Florence Stoney Sisters in Radiology written by Adrian Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the lives and achievements of two Irish sisters, Edith and Florence Stoney, who pioneered the use of new electromedical technologies, especially X-rays but also ultraviolet radiation and diathermy. In addition, the narrative follows several intertwined themes as experienced by the sisters during their lifetimes. Their upbringing, influenced by their liberal-minded scientist father, set the tone for both their lives. Irish independence fractured their family heritage. Their professional experiences, fulfilling for Florence as a qualified doctor but often frustrating for Edith as a Cambridge-educated scientist, mirrored those of other aspiring women during this period, when the suffragist movement expanded and women’s lobby groups were formed. World War I created an environment in which their unusual specialist knowledge was widely needed, and the sisters’ war experiences are carefully examined in the book. But ultimately this is the extraordinary story of two independent but closely bonded sisters and their abiding love and support for one another.

Book William E Wilson 1851 1908 The Work and Family of a Westmeath Astronomer

Download or read book William E Wilson 1851 1908 The Work and Family of a Westmeath Astronomer written by Ian Elliott and Charles Mollan and published by Charles Mollan. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson was a wealthy gentleman who could afford to indulge his hobby of Astronomy. He was attracted to this subject when, as a teenager, he took part in the Total Eclipse Expedition to Algeria in 1870. He set up a well-equipped private Observatory at Daramona House in Streete, County Westmeath. His contributions to Astronomy included: The first fairly accurate estimate of the temperature of the Sun's visible surface; the first photo-electric measurements of the brightness of stars; a series of superb celestial photographs with a 24-inch Grubb reflector; The first use of cinematography in solar physics; One of the first to suggest that radio-activity might keep the stars shining. The book covers all these initiatives and much more. Wilson, though he never attended university, was elected to Fellowship of the (London) Royal Society and received an honorary doctorate from Dublin University. But the book covers his family and life style, with brief biographies of his contemporary scientific colleagues. The book is well illustrated with family and astronomical photographs. It is written for the 'educated layman', and no knowledge of Astronomy (or indeed science) is required.

Book Maxwell s Equations and the Principles of Electromagnetic Phenomena

Download or read book Maxwell s Equations and the Principles of Electromagnetic Phenomena written by J. Felipe de Almeida and published by Editora Dialética. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide self-learning aids on electromagnetic theory and an introduction on computational electrodynamics. Nor, of course, is it intended to present a self-sufficient treaty on this subject. Therefore, a prior knowledge of the notions of differential and integral calculus should be accompanied in parallel to the systematic development of beginning students. Following this proposition, Maxwell's equations are solved in frequency-domain and in time-domain, through computational techniques. Thus, this material is aimed for both students starting an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Physics as well as those who are in more advanced studies on electromagnetic theory.

Book Revisiting Italy

Download or read book Revisiting Italy written by Rebecca Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of mass tourism, Italy became increasingly accessible to Victorian women travellers not only as a locus of artistic culture but also as a site of political enquiry. Despite being outwardly denied a political voice in Britain, many female tourists were conspicuous in their commitment to the Italian campaign for national independence, or Risorgimento (1815–61). Revisiting Italy brings several previously unexamined travel accounts by women to light during a decisive period in this political campaign. Revealing the wider currency of the Risorgimento in British literature, Butler situates once-popular but now-marginalized writers: Clotilda Stisted, Janet Robertson, Mary Pasqualino, Selina Bunbury, Margaret Dunbar and Frances Minto Elliot alongside more prominent figures: the Shelley-Byron circle, the Brownings, Florence Nightingale and the Kemble sisters. Going beyond the travel book, she analyses a variety of forms of travel writing including unpublished letters, privately printed accounts and periodical serials. Revisiting Italy focuses on the convergence of political advocacy, gender ideologies, national identity and literary authority in women’s travel writing. Whether promoting nationalism through a maternal lens, politicizing the pilgrimage motif or reviving gothic representations of a revolutionary Italy, it identifies shared touristic discourses as temporally contingent, shaped by commercial pressures and the volatile political climate at home and abroad.
