Book Crystal Chemistry of High Tc Superconducting Copper Oxides

Download or read book Crystal Chemistry of High Tc Superconducting Copper Oxides written by Bernard Raveau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of these materials necessitates a close collaboration between physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides, which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir radiation effects.

Book Perovskites and Other Framework Structure Crystalline Materials

Download or read book Perovskites and Other Framework Structure Crystalline Materials written by Pierre Saint-Grégoire and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet site of the book: http: //perovskitesandotherfws.co-ac.com ----------------------------------------------------------------Perovskites are among the most famous materials due to their exceptional properties: they present nearly all existing types of interesting properties, in particular as ferroics or multiferroics, they may be insulators, (super)conductors, or semiconductors, magnetoresistant, they are used in numerous devices, they present hundreds of variants and different crystalline phases and phase transitions, and recently appeared as probably the most promising materials for photovoltaics. With a crystal structure characterized by octahedra that share their corners, these materials belong to the wider category of Framework Structure (FWS) materials the structure of which is based on units (octahedra, tetrahedra, ...) that share some of their corners (or edges) with their neighbours. This particular feature of FWS materials confers to them unique properties. This review volume is constituted of 26 chapters on different aspects, and is divided in two parts, Fundamental aspects and general properties, and Elaborated materials and applied properties . Its main purpose is to attempt to identify the properties common to all members of the vast family of FWS materials, and understand their differences. Besides perovskites, derived compounds as 2D perovskites, Dion-Jacobson, Ruddlesden-Popper, Aurivillius, tungsten-bronzes, and others, are presented, and their preparation and/or properties as single crystals, ceramics, thin films, multilayers, nanomaterials, nanofibers, nanorods, etc, are discussed. We focus on new trends and important recent developments by leaving somewhat aside more classical aspects which can be easily found in older textbooks or review articles. Among most recent applications, this volume focuses on applications related with interactions with other molecules, on photovoltaics, and on memories, with a special attention to perovskite solar cells that have certainly attracted the most attention of researchers in recent years, opening extremely promising routes in photovoltaics. In conclusion, this book presents a collection of texts elucidating various aspects of the relation between structural organization (including dynamical aspects) and singular properties of framework crystals; it proposes a reasonable balance between experimental and theoretical results, and between fundamental aspects and applied properties. This volume can be approached on several levels (each chapter initially assumes that the reader is not a specialist in the subject, and is presented in a pedagogical way): it is accessible to master or doctoral students, as well as to researchers who want to have informations on recent developments, who will find excellent detailed introductions up to hotsubjects. It may also be used by undergraduate students who should approach given subjects. The volume contains 800 pages written by 76 authors from different countries, it has an index, and is completed by numerous figures to illustrate the text.

Book Local Structure Investigation of Bulk and Nanophase Perovskites

Download or read book Local Structure Investigation of Bulk and Nanophase Perovskites written by Katharine L. Page and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar materials play an important role in science and engineering, and efforts to understand, characterize, design and engineer them are driven by a continued demand for robust ferroelectrics and the quest for practical multi-ferroics, among other noble pursuits. The intricate relationship between the properties of polar materials and their crystal structures is well established. While traditional crystallographic analysis relies on the long-range translational periodicity of structure and yields important average materials characteristics, it is becoming increasingly apparent in the exploration of functional materials that observed properties can arise from local correlations that are absent in this average information. In these cases, the length scale of interest is small enough that conventional techniques are inadequate, and we are obliged to consider information beyond the unit cell and Bragg diffraction.

Book Investigating the Relationship Between Structure and Magnetic Ground States of 5d Double Perovskites

Download or read book Investigating the Relationship Between Structure and Magnetic Ground States of 5d Double Perovskites written by Phuong Minh Tran and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between structure and magnetic properties of 5d double perovskites and double perovskite derivative structures through different chemical substitution. Because of high spin-orbit coupling, high interorbital repulsion, and the extended nature of the 5d orbitals, how the spin, orbital, and lattice degree of freedom couple in order to stabilize the magnetic ground state is not well understood. The aim of this dissertation is to perturb the crystal lattice with chemical pressure or charge defects and determine the sensitivity of the magnetic properties to these changes. Chapter 2 discusses the effect of distortions of the magnetic cation environment on the magnetic ground state of 5d1 double perovskites Sr2ZnReO6, Sr2LiOsO6, and Sr2NaOsO6. Chapter 3 discusses the effect of charge doping on the 5d1 magnetic ground state in the solid solution system Ba2NaxCa1-xOsO6. Chapter 4 is the exploration of the Ba2Sr2-xNiOsO6 in order to investigate the unusual magnetic ground states observed in double perovskites containing Ni2+ and Os6+.
