Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH “I wrote the book for students who are learning how to be consumers of research, as well as for those who will be planning their own research project. To be a successful researcher you need a variety of skills. You need to become a critical reader of published work, to learn about research methods and design – and to be able to put what you learn to use.” Dr. Ken Springer, Southern Methodist University Clearly organized, well-written, and user-friendly, this text provides a comprehensive look at quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches to research. The first six chapters introduce educational research methods, the second six chapters focus on quantitative design and analysis, while the final six chapters cover qualitative, mixed-methods, and applied research. The comprehensive approach of this textbook is supplemented by extensive coverage of topics such as research ethics, program evaluation, and statistical analysis. Several characteristics provide students with a meaningful context for the material: Each chapter features three “Spotlight on Research” sections consisting of a lengthy excerpt from a recently published study. Discussions of research studies throughout the text provide additional context for the material. Each chapter helps students apply newly acquired knowledge through features such as end-of-chapter exercises as well as the section, “Applications: A guide for the beginning researcher.” The book’s companion website provides both students and instructors with additional resources, including a Study Guide, a Resource Guide (including links to full-text articles), and an Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank.

Book Ameliorating Mental Disability

Download or read book Ameliorating Mental Disability written by Alfred A. Baumeister and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grows out of the optimistic view that mental retardation can be treated. It views mental retardation primarily as a behavioral problem. A child is diagnosed as retarded primarily because he behaves in certain maladaptive ways, not simply because he may have a chromosomal anomaly. The contributors view any intervention intended to produce adaptive changes in the behavior of the retarded as "treatment." The authors come from the fields of medicine, special education, and speech and hearing, as well as from psychology. The book is intended to help students and workers in the field apply research findings and theoretical formulations in their appraisal and treatment of mental retardation. The primary emphasis of the book is empirical. While many of the author's suggestions have not been subjected to rigorous experimental scrutiny, almost all have been derived from close examination of the research literature. A wide diversity of topics are included in this volume. Criteria employed were the relevance of the topic to the understanding and modifi cation of defective behavior; and the subject's popularity or neglect in other sources. Ameliorating Mental Disability will be of interest to medical officers in institutions for the mentally challenged, lecturers giving courses for teachers of the educationally subnormal, and to psychologists, social workers, and teachers.

Book excerpt: This highly readable and comprehensive overview of psychophysiology provides information regarding the anatomy and physiology of various body systems, methods of recording their activity, and ways in which these measures relate to human behavior. Biofeedback applications are contained in a separate chapter and discussions of stress management, job strain, and personality factors that affect cardiovascular reactivity are presented. There is much of interest here to the student, researcher, and clinician in behavioral medicine, ergonomics, emotion, cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology, and health psychology. Now in its fourth edition, Andreassi's Psychophysiology explores some of the newer areas of importance and updates findings in traditional topics of interest. Significant changes to this edition include: updated information on brain activity in memory, perception, and intelligence; new information on brain imaging and behavior; separate chapters on pupillography and eye movements; new information on the startle pattern and eyeblink; separate chapters on clinical and non-clinical applications; updated information on cardiovascular reactivity and personality; the latest biofeedback and ergonomics applications; novel findings in environmental psychophysiology; brief summaries at the end of each section; and an appendix on laboratory safety Each chapter is a self-contained unit allowing instructors to customize the presentation of the material. With over 1,700 citations, Andreassi's Psychophysiology is the definitive text in the field. An instructor's manual is now available. Based on the book, the manual is primarily a test bank to be used in giving examinations to students during the teaching of a course. Both multiple-choice and essay questions have been provided, along with lists of key terms and ideas. These can be used for definition-type questions and to highlight important concepts, as well as alerting the instructor to important terms and ideas that they may want to cover in lectures. Sample syllabi are provided for teaching a course at both undergraduate and graduate levels to help the instructor who is preparing a course for the first time.
