Book Burnout in College Resident Assistants

Download or read book Burnout in College Resident Assistants written by Dustin DeBose and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resident assistants (RAs) are vital members of the student affairs divisions of colleges and universities across the United States. As peer leaders, they are responsible for performing many duties; they must, for example, complete administrative tasks, counsel students, mediate conflict, serve as role models, assimilate students, facilitate groups, and much more. Furthermore, RAs are expected to be available for their students at all times of the day and night, responding to any situation when needed. These responsibilities come on top of their own work and academic responsibilities as college students. These varied roles and responsibilities, along with the 24-hour nature of the role, create an environment where burnout can occur. Research into RA burnout reached its peak in the 1980s with sporadic research being conducted since. Additionally, information uncovered in research articles has been inconsistent, often with one study finding one factor significant, with another finding results in direct conflict. This nonexperimental, causal-comparative study examined the role that specific factors have on burnout in RAs at a large private university in the southeastern United States. Biological sex, grade point average, and program type were the independent variables, while scores from the Maslach Burnout Inventory subscales of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were the dependent variables. The data was analyzed through three separate multivariate analysis of variance tests. No significant differences in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, or personal accomplishment were found based on biological sex, grade point average, or program type.

Book But Are You Okay Exploring Burnout and Help seeking Behaviors in Resident Assistants

This book was released on 2020 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resident Assistant position is a leadership role available to college students interested in expanding their interpersonal and administrative skills. These students serve as a "first line of defense" for colleges and universities in supporting their peers, managing crises, and identifying students of concern for the institution. While existing literature has clearly identified the personal and professional benefits of the Resident Assistant role, it has also examined the negative impact of the role, specifically the increased likelihood of these students experiencing the phenomenon of burnout. However, there is limited qualitative research available on this subject to give voice to how Resident Assistants make meaning of their burnout experiences and do or do not seek help for these concerns. The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of Resident Assistants as they relate to help-seeking behaviors and burnout or compassion fatigue. By exploring these issues, this study will complement existing literature on the lives of Resident Assistants, and also fill a gap associated with the qualitative inquiry needed to fully understand their mental health and stress in the position. The study uses a qualitative research design to examine the stories of eight Resident Assistants who participated in semi-structured interviews. The participants were identified as having a high level of burnout through the use of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. The study takes place at a large urban research institution in the Mid-Atlantic region, which houses approximately 6,000 students in its residence halls. The findings from this study demonstrate that Resident Assistants perceive each other as their strongest support system and share a common belief that unless you've lived the experience, it cannot be understood. Findings also reveal a variety of factors that impact and intensify burnout specifically the feeling of being "always on" or constantly engaged in giving help to others which leads to emotional exhaustion. Finally, Resident Assistants highlighted factors from within Residential Life and within their personal lives that impact their levels of burnout and likelihood to seek support for these issues.

Book Investigating the Correlation Between Burnout and Spirituality Among Resident Assitants at Liberty University

Book excerpt: The concept of employment burnout represents an important point of interest among researchers who examine the relationship between individuals and their work environment. The present study investigated the nature of burnout among Resident Assistants (RA) at a midsize evangelical university and its correlation to spirituality. The scores obtained from 126 participants on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI) were analyzed according to the multiple regression method. The results demonstrated that two of the six variables from SAI, namely Awareness and Instability, had the highest predictive value of burnout among RAs. Because the predictive values of these two variables account for a maximum of 31 percent of the burnout variance, it was established that further research is necessary in order to explain the contribution of other factors to RA burnout.

Book Understanding the Perceptions of Mattering Feelings of Burnout and Job Satisfaction of Resident Assistants at Four year Midwestern Universities

Download or read book Understanding the Perceptions of Mattering Feelings of Burnout and Job Satisfaction of Resident Assistants at Four year Midwestern Universities written by James C. Stoner and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since first conceptualized in the 1970s, employee burnout has received much scholarly attention in various service-oriented fields. While some disciplines have benefited from an abundance of burnout research (e.g., nursing, education), other specific jobs have received limited attention. One such position is the Resident Assistant (RA) job on college campuses. RAs serve a critical, service-oriented role in higher education and have a wide range of difficult job responsibilities. As such, RAs are not immune to burnout. The limited existing research on RA burnout has failed to address the foundational cause of burnout; that is, the relationships between RAs who provide care and the residents to whom RAs are responsible for providing care. Therefore, this study addressed this "relationship gap" by using the theoretical framework of mattering to explore the relationships between RAs and their residents. On the most fundamental level, mattering asks if others are aware of us, find us important, and rely on us. This study surveyed RAs at four four-year Midwestern institutions. The collected data were analyzed using quantitative procedures to assess differences in RA mattering and burnout between gender, community composition, and employment choice; to determine the relationships between RA mattering, burnout, and job satisfaction; to develop models of RA mattering predicting RA burnout; and, to develop models predicting RA job satisfaction through RA background characteristics, mattering, and burnout. The results of this study reveal that RAs who chose not to return to their position the following year perceive lower levels of mattering to their residents and increased feelings of burnout. Additionally, mattering was found to significantly predict two of the three burnout dimensions: depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Combined with the three dimensions of burnout, select components of mattering significantly predicted a substantial amount of the variance in RA job satisfaction. Recommendations for research and practice are shared.

Book Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout

Download or read book Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.
