Book excerpt: The work of student affairs professionals is demanding and unpredictable. This book addresses the particular challenges that it presents to women in mid-career.While much has been written about new graduate students, new professionals and senior administrators in student affairs, scant attention has been paid to the issues of mid-career, and particularly as they impact women. Here are the stories of over twenty women, from widely different backgrounds, reflecting on their lives at mid-career. They describe the choices they made and share the lessons they have learned, particularly the ever-present concerns about reconciling the demands of work and responsibilities to family and partners . The volume focuses on issues that have particular and significant meaning for women. The individual narratives are grouped into five sections, each beginning with a scholarly introduction to its topics. The sections deal with education and self development, such as the life implications of embarking on a doctorate; dual career couples and such decisions as relocation; choices about having children and responsibilities for the care of aging parents; arriving at mid-career; and alternatives to traditional, linear career progression in student affairs administration. This volume is a particular gift to women currently in mid-career positions in student affairs, women embarking on their personal and professional journey in student affairs, the partners of such women, their colleagues, and the individuals who supervise them.

Book Rising to the Top

Book excerpt: Women account for over half of the populations of enrolled students and employed staff and administrators in higher education. In student affairs, women current accounts for over 60% of employees at the entry and mid-levels of administration, but less than half of all senior-level executive positions are filled by women. Furthermore, the majority of the women in senior-level student affairs administrative roles work at two-year institutions; doctoral granting research intensive universities have the lowest numbers of women student affairs professionals in senior-level positions. The career pathway to advance from entry-level to senior-level positions is unclear, and as a result, many women are remaining stagnant at the mid-level without a clear understanding of how to advance. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of how women professionals entering the field of student affairs in public research universities can chart a career pathway from their entry point to senior-level student affairs administrator positions. Because the numbers of female students and women in student affairs administration is continuing to grow, it is important that women are equally represented at the senior-levels at the top institutions in the U.S. Five current senior-level student affairs administrators, holding jobs at public four-year doctoral granting research universities in two states in the south central region of the U.S. were the participants for this study. Through purposeful sampling, the participants were identified to engage in this qualitative comparative case study inquiry. Various methods of data collection were used including: face-to-face semi-structured interviews (the primary source of data), document collection, and journaling. The research questions for this inquiry encompassed three broad inquiries including: (a) the reason female senior-level student affairs administrators choose to enter and remain in the field of student affairs, while attempting to chart a career pathway to senior-level positions at public four-year doctoral granting research institutions; (b) the experiences of women senior-level student affairs administrators, and how these experiences impacted their successful advancement to their current roles; and (c) advice for aspiring women senior-level student affairs administrators. The findings suggested that women can expect to experience both positive and negative encounters that will affect their career progression. The participants provided insight and advice for women in student affairs who aspire to become senior-level administrators that incorporated the importance of building a strong professional network of colleagues, embracing and leading change, and continuing education and professional development. Women must be intentional in creating a meaningful and rewarding career in student affairs and play a major part in developing their pathway to the top.

Book Effective Professional Development Strategies to Support the Advancement of Women Into Senior Student Affairs Officer Positions

This book was released on 2012 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of women represented in high level student affairs positions has been documented in the literature (Ting & Watt, 1999). The literature suggest that an existing pool of qualified, experienced women is present on university campuses, but has yet to be tapped to enhance the gender diversity at senior administrative level positions (King & Gomez, 2007), specifically mid-level managers advancing to Senior Student Affairs Officer positions (SSAOs). Past research has looked at barriers that have prevented women from advancing, but what we don't know is the degree to which professional development is an effective means of helping women prepare to seek SSAO positions and manage work life balance which is a prominent barrier for women in the literature. This research study adds to the literature by studying the effectiveness of a key professional development symposium, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Alice Manicur Symposium, and how the perceived concerns regarding advancement from mid-managerial positions to SSAO positions are addressed. Specifically, the study was centered around the Symposium's impact on self-efficacy in skill sets to pursue a SSAO position, managing work life balance, and overall effectiveness.

Book Gender and Work

Book excerpt: Research has examined the experiences of women faculty in higher education. However, the experiences of non-faculty mid-level women administrators within higher education continues to be understudied. Women are often the majority in non-faculty positions, yet men dominate senior level positions. Instead, women are frequently clustered in entry and mid-level administrative roles within student affairs divisions or departments, often with limited access to career ladders. Drawing on the theoretical framework of gendered work organizations, this study explores the experiences of women working in non-academic departments, and analyzes how these experiences impact their career advancement at four-year public universities. More specifically, I examine workplace culture, elements of advancement, and student affairs as a helping profession as plausible factors that explain the disparate outcomes of non-faculty women working in higher education.

Book Women in Student Affairs

Download or read book Women in Student Affairs written by Krista Jorge Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of women who have children and work in mid-level student affairs positions. The study of this phenomenon was driven by four problems: (a) women face barriers in rising to upper-level leadership positions, (b) women are more likely than men to leave the field of student affairs, (c) there is a dearth of research related to women who have children and work in student affairs, and (d) the mid level has received inadequate research attention. These issues for women in student affairs called for further examination of career development strategies and work-life balance support and initiatives. Without meaningful support for career development and work-life balance, women professionals may continue to leave the field at a higher rate than men. Within the naturalistic inquiry research paradigm, I adopted a phenomenological approach. Fifteen women at colleges and universities in Texas, who held mid-level student affairs administrator positions and were mothers, were interviewed. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method. The findings indicated that the dual roles of being a mother and an administrator presented challenges and rewards for each participant. The women often experienced overlap or collision between the two roles and the navigation of the role collision prompted the women to develop strategies to address these challenges. The five most common strategies that participants used were (a) building support systems, (b) defining boundaries, (c) managing time efficiently, (d) focusing on family, and (e) taking care of self. An analysis of the women's experiences related led to five major conclusions: (a) mother + administrator = a potentially rewarding challenge, (b) acknowledging role interconnectedness is important, (c) combining the two roles comes at a cost, (d) career path is shaped by dual identifies, and (e) personalized strategies are key to success. Based on the findings, a new conceptual framework was developed to capture the essence of women administrators in student affairs. Implications for human resource development were drawn to address career development and work-life balance issues in the field of student affairs.

Book WOMEN MID LEVEL CAREER PROFESSIONALS

Download or read book WOMEN MID LEVEL CAREER PROFESSIONALS written by Candice Dianne Frazer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women mid-level career professionals continue to face obstacles as they move forward in their careers. Opportunities for advancement and balancing personal and professional commitment remained challenging. Supportive relationships were integral in career guidance, navigating decision-making and office politics, and networking. This qualitative study explored the shared lived experiences of women mid-level career professionals in higher education. The focus was to examine their professional experiences, focusing on the challenges faced, perception of leadership, supportive relationships in the workplace, and institutional support via professional development. In addition, leadership self-efficacy, social capital, and intersectionality between race and gender were highlighted to understand further the experiences of mid-level career professionals in higher education. The research questions were: (1) What are the shared experiences of mid-level women professionals in higher education? And (2) How do work relationships influence the experiences of mid-level women professionals in higher education? There were fifteen participants in this study who were recruited via email and self-identified as mid-level career professionals. They were required to complete an interest form, demographic survey, and two 60- 90-minute interviews. Seven themes emerged and were organized into three categories: (a) perceptions of leadership styles & professional identity, (b) challenges, support, & morale in the workplace, and (c) work relationships influence on career growth. There were several findings in this study. There was ambiguity around the definition of mid-level career professionals. Perceptions of effective leadership styles were contradictory. Advancement opportunities continued to be challenging, and often, women hit a wall. There was invisibility due to lack of support from supervisors, and title- consciousness played a factor in seeking guidance and learning opportunities. The balance of personal and professional lives was difficult and influenced decision-making in terms of career trajectory. An increase in women supporting women was imperative to creating connections between mid-level and senior-level. Lastly, the experiences of Black women mid-level professionals did not differ much from the experiences of participants who identified as white. However, all the women of color in this study spoke to sponsorship for validation. Overall, this research contributed to a deeper understanding of women mid-level career professionals' experiences in higher education.

Download or read book Empowering Women in Higher Education and Student Affairs written by Penny A. Pasque and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published with How do we interrupt the current paradigms of sexism in the academy? How do we construct a new and inclusive gender paradigm that resists the dominant values of the patriarchy? And why are these agendas important not just for women, but for higher education as a whole? These are the questions that these extensive and rich analyses of the historical and contemporary roles of women in higher education— as administrators, faculty, students, and student affairs professionals—seek constructively to answer. In doing so they address the intersection of gender and women’s other social identities, such as of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, and ability. This book addresses the experiences and position of women students, from application to college through graduate school, and the barriers they encounter; the continuing inequalities in the rates of promotion and progression of women and other marginalized groups to positions of authority, and the gap in earnings between men and women; and pays particular attention to how race and other social markers impact such disparities, contextualizing them across all institutional types. Written collaboratively by an intergenerational group of women, men, and transgender people with different social identities, feminist perspectives, and professional identities— and who, in the process, built upon each other’s work—this volume constitutes a call to educators and scholars to work toward centering feminist and other marginalized perspectives in their practice and research in order to equitably address the evolving complexities of college and university life. Employing a wide range of theoretical lenses, examining a variety of models of practice, and giving voice to a diversity of personal experiences through narrative, this is a major contribution to the scholarship on women in higher education. This is a book for all women in the academy who want to better understand their experience, and to dismantle the remaining barriers of sexism and oppression—for themselves, and future generations of students.
