Book excerpt: Counseling and psychology have experienced a conflicted relationship with the issue of spirituality over the last century. Spirituality is a construct that has been receiving more attention in counseling over the last fifteen to twenty years. More counselors and educators are affirming its place and value in the counseling relationship. Yet, there is a disparity between this and what counselors-in-training are being taught regarding spirituality, its value to clients and counselors, and its role in the counseling relationship. Very little research has been done examining spirituality and its relationship to counseling students level of confidence and competence in their work---their self-efficacy. This study investigated the relationship of perceived spirituality to counseling self-efficacy for graduate counseling students in faith-based and secular institutions. Additionally, the researcher studied the relationship of spirituality and counseling self-efficacy to the following demographic variables: age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status. The results from a sample of 135 students demonstrated a relationship between spirituality and counseling self-efficacy for students in faith-based and secular universities. The four demographic variables studied---age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status---showed a relationship with counseling self-efficacy but not spirituality. Implications for counseling pedagogy and clinical work are offered. Areas of future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This investigation tested empirically whether college student participants (N = 176) would perceive a counselor during an intake interview as more credible when she asked questions of a religious and spiritual nature versus when she did not. Additionally, because research has suggested clients prefer to discuss religion and spirituality in counseling (Rose, Westefeld, & Ansley, 2001), and that level of religiosity influences perceptions of the counselor in this situation (Guinee & Tracey, 1997), the current study investigated whether preference for discussion of religious and spiritual issues and level of participant religiosity would influence counselor ratings. Results of the current study indicated students did not find the intake counselor who included religious and spiritual items in the intake session more credible than the intake counselor who did not include religious and spiritual items in the intake. Results also demonstrated preferences for discussing religious and spiritual issues in counseling and participant level of religiosity did not moderate the relationship between group assignment (religious and spiritual experimental condition versus non-religious and spiritual experimental condition) and counselor ratings on the CRF-S (Corrigan & Schmidt, 1983). Analyses comparing participants who had never received counseling before (n=115) and participants who had previous counseling experience (n = 61), suggested the participants who had no previous counseling experience rated the counselor in both role plays significantly higher overall. Exploratory analyses with a short-answer open-ended opinion question suggested some students (31%) want to discuss religious and spiritual issues in counseling; some students (23%) stated their preference to discuss religious and spiritual issues in counseling depended on other factors; and some students (41%) did not want to discuss religious or spiritual issues in counseling. The fact that student participants rated the counselor who introduced religious and spiritual issues in this brief section of an intake interview similar to when she did not is noteworthy and is discussed in terms of implications for research, training, supervision, and clinical work.

Professionals who treat religious and spiritual concerns are sought by a majority of clients. Religious and spiritual training is critical for the ethical treatment of the client, a part of developmental wellness and integrated holistic health theories, and also vital to optimum physical and mental health development. Yet, spiritual and religious competencies are often neglected in graduate studies, leaving counselors fearful and inadequately trained to address spiritual and religious concerns with clients. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) requires training in graduate education that promotes counselor competence in the area of religion and spirituality, but little research exists exploring systematic religious and spiritual training at a graduate level. This correlational study provides information for researchers, counselor educators, supervisors, and CACREP-accredited programs on graduate students’ perceptions regarding having met established religious and spiritual competencies at the end of graduate training. The researcher also explores variables for increased competency including types of curricula, types of institution, and perceived openness of the program to discuss religious and spiritual concepts.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between research self-efficacy (as measured by the Research Self-Efficacy Scale [Greeley et al., 1989]), perceptions of the research training environment (as measured by the Research Training Environment Scale --Revised [Gelso et al., 1996]), and interest in research (as measured by the Interest in Research Questionnaire [Bieschke & Bishop, 1994]) within a national sample of doctoral counselor education students (N = 89). Additionally, the study investigated whether there were differences between levels of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research in relation to the demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, race/ethnicity, scholarly productivity, reported professional aspirations, and number of doctoral-level research courses completed) of counselor education doctoral students. An ex-post facto, cross-sectional design was implemented which included the following statistical analyses: Pearson's correlation coefficients (two-tailed), simultaneous multiple regression, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings identified that the demographic variables of age and doctoral-level research courses completed had a statistically significant effect upon perceptions of the research training environment. In addition, results suggested that scholarly activity had a statistically significant effect on research self-efficacy scores. Finally, interest in research was positively correlated with research self-efficacy scores. In summary, the study addressed the present void in the counselor education literature with regard to counselor education doctoral students' development in the areas of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research. In order to contribute to the counselor education literature and support doctoral student development, it is crucial that counselor education doctoral training programs provide an effective research training environment to foster and encourage student research. Recognizing and appreciating the influence of counselor education doctoral students' research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research may not only be important for students, but is also necessary for counselor education doctoral preparation programs to continue to develop and prepare students for academic positions and success. Study findings may provide beneficial information to assist colleges and universities to develop and tailor polices to encourage and foster research amongst their doctoral counselor education students.

Book excerpt: What a counselor-in-training believes about his or her ability directly impacts his/her persistence and ability to perform a task successfully. Evidence shows a link between academic factors and counselor self-efficacy with trainees who perform better academically being more confident in their ability to counsel. In addition, there is a strong probability that part of a trainee's belief system and subsequent behavior choices are connected with his or her total wellness. Having a higher self-efficacy can improve counselor competence and give insight into the gatekeeping process. Because there is limited research to address academic factors and total wellness of counseling self-efficacy (CSE) of counselors-in-training (CIT), this study concentrates on the gap in the educational and counseling literature. This research documents the extent to which these variables can contribute to the prediction of CSE of CIT. Specifically, academic factors, wellness and CSE of CIT were assessed across randomly selected CACREP accredited master's-level counseling programs. Liaisons were contacted, provided a description of the study, and invited to ask any questions related to their students' involvement in the study. Those who agreed to allow participation in their program were asked to forward an email introducing the study and requesting participation to counseling practicum and internship students at their institution. In the email, potential participants were provided with directions for accessing and completing the survey, contact information for the researcher, and approximate deadline for completion. Each participant was asked to complete a consent form, a demographic questionnaire, the 5F-Wel, and the Counselor Activity Self Efficacy Scale. There were 2 hypotheses considered in this study. First, a significant relationship will exist between academic factors and the CSE of CIT. This hypothesis was not supported. A significant relationship will exist between the total wellness score and the CSE of CIT. Regression analysis revealed that the complete model including all 5 predictor variables did not significantly predict CSE of CIT. This model accounted for only 6 % of the variance of CSE of CIT. Thus, this hypothesis was not supported. These findings indicate the need for additional research to examine which factors contribute to the CSE of CIT.

Book excerpt: In the past 20 years, the counseling profession has increased the amount of research and focus on integrating spirituality and religion into applied practice, curriculum, and supervision. In the last few years, some have argued that spirituality is the fifth force in the counseling field. The purpose of this study was to (a) explore counseling students' exposure to religious and spiritual issues in counseling (SRIC) practica and their comfort with addressing SRIC with clients, (b) explore counseling students' exposure to an intervention of SRIC practica and their perceived competence with addressing SRIC with clients, and (c) assess the impact of an SRIC intervention that was based on the ASERVIC competencies on counselors-in-training (CITs) in regard to their comfort level and perceived competence addressing SRIC. Results revealed that an SRIC intervention had a positive impact on CITs' perceived comfort and perceived competence integrating SRIC and that there was a positive correlation between their perceived comfort and perceived competence scores. Institutional accreditation type, religious versus secular institution, and religious self identification had no effect on increased comfort and perceived competence of CITs for this study. Implications for counseling practice, practicum supervision, and counselor education pedagogy are discussed.

Book excerpt: A holistic model of counseling includes spirituality as an inherent human dimension and component for multicultural awareness (Walker et al., 2004; Hoogestraat & Trammel, 2003). Although there has been movement toward inclusion of spirituality in counselor education and training programs, research on counseling students' competencies of spirituality is virtually nonexistent. Core competencies of spirituality is defined as an understanding of the spiritual phenomena, an awareness of one's own spiritual perspective, an understanding of the client's spiritual perspective, and knowledge of spiritually related interventions and strategies. A new instrument, the Spirituality in Counselor Education and Training Survey was developed by the researcher to measure counseling students' agreement of core competencies of spirituality, inclusion of spirituality in their education and training programs, their personal spirituality, and the importance of spirituality in professional practice. The Religious Ideology Scale and Scientific Ideology Scale (Eckhardt, Kassinove, & Edwards, 1992) was also used in this study. The measures were administered to 55 counseling students in three CACREP accredited graduate programs in Idaho. Descriptive and correlational analyses were used to examine relationships between counseling students' self-ratings on core competencies of spirituality and subscale measurements of (1) ratings of inclusion of core competencies of spirituality in their counseling education and training programs, (2) ratings of personal spirituality, (3) ratings of importance of spirituality in professional practice, (4) attitudes toward religious ideology, and (5) attitudes toward scientific ideology. Results indicated that high agreement with Core Competencies of Spirituality is positively correlated with the first four of the five subscales and negatively related to the fifth subscale. Results of this study will help in identifying key factors and specific guidelines related to inclusion of spirituality in counselor education and training programs, and assessment of counseling students' development/competency levels of core competencies of spirituality.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to measure the perceived degree of spiritual development of graduating seniors at 26 denominational religious colleges and universities in the United States to analyze the possible effects of secularization on religious colleges. The study focused on the Millennial religious college student and suggests an approach towards improving the academic environment at religious colleges to promote a positive atmosphere for improving spiritual development. A question on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) was analyzed over an eight-year period to determine student and denominational college trends. The researcher determined the degree of perceived spiritual growth at religious institutions by denomination and identified strategies that higher scoring colleges are using to retain their religious purpose to promote spiritual development. Max Weber’s Secularization Theory was used as the theoretical framework to determine the effects of secularization on religious colleges and universities. The study used a convenience random ex-post facto non-experimental, causal-comparative design to analyze the differences in perceptions of senior students at these religious colleges regarding the degree to which they developed a deepened sense of spirituality. The study also analyzed differences between students responses as Catholic and Protest/Other Christian denomination colleges. The instrument used in this study was the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) developed by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (IUCPR). The results showed significant differences of perceived student spiritual growth between all 26 religious colleges and indicated significant differences in perceived spiritual growth by denominational group when interacting with year groups.

Book excerpt: College students undergo identity development in emerging adulthood, including adjustments in relationships, exploration of occupations, and revisions of spiritual worldviews (Arnett, 2000). Using a modified portion of Lents (2004) normative model of life satisfaction, this study sought to construct a moderated mediation path to assess the role spiritual models play in college students developing traits of spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope, and the associations these traits had with college self-efficacy. Additionally, this study proposed perspective-taking as a moderator of the association between environmental support from spiritual models and spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope, such that college students high in perspective-taking would understand and internalize traits of models rather than only imitating the spiritual practices of the model. Participants (n = 384) in this one-time survey study were recruited from a public, urban university and a private, Christian university. Participants responded to the following inventories: Spiritual Modeling Inventory of Life Environments (SMILE), Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments Short Form (ASPIRES), Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale, Revised (CAMS-R), Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), The Hope Scale, Perspective-Taking subscale of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the College Self-Efficacy Inventory (CSEI). Results of the moderated mediation paths show spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope mediated the association between environmental support from spiritual models and college self-efficacy, but perspective-taking did not moderate associations from environmental support from spiritual models to the mediators. These findings supported the modified portion of Lents (2004) normative model of life satisfaction which states that environmental support, including support given by spiritual models, enhanced the development of healthy traits such as spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope. In turn, the healthy traits were associated with increased college self-efficacy..

Students, the authors argue, grapple with the big questions in life: Who am I? What are my values? Do I have a mission in life? Why am I in college? What kind of person do I want to be? What sort of world do I want to help to create? Their answers to these questions help determine their academic and career choices and are tied to the development of personal qualities such as empathy, caring, and social responsibility. The study finds that, while students' religious engagement declines during college, at the same time they become substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively egaged in a spiritual quest. Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study provides strong evidence pointing to specific experiences during college that can contribute to students' spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in college is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.
