Book Cranio Facial Growth in Man

Download or read book Cranio Facial Growth in Man written by Robert E. Moyers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cranio-Facial Growth in Man contains the proceedings of a Conference on Genetics, Bone Biology, and Analysis of Growth Data, held in Ann Arbor, Michigan on May 1-3, 1967. Contributors discuss the state of knowledge in the area of cranio-facial growth, with emphasis on three primary areas of cranio-facial research: bone biology, genetics, and analysis of growth data. This text consists of 19 chapters organized into six sections. After giving an overview of research on cranio-facial growth done at the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR), this book turns its attention to the biology of bone. Topics covered in this section include the mechanisms of cartilage growth and replacement in endochondral ossification; the histological characteristics of bone that reflect mineral homeostasis; and modes of growth of the neurocranium. The reader is also introduced to the genetics of cranio-facial growth and techniques in processing and handling growth data. A chapter that evaluates methods and perspectives in cranio-facial research concludes the book. This book will serve as a useful guide to prospective and active investigators in the field of human biology, to graduate students in their selection of a meaningful research topic, and to the NIDR in terms of future program planning.

Book Craniofacial Development The Tissue and Molecular Interactions That Control Development of the Head

Download or read book Craniofacial Development The Tissue and Molecular Interactions That Control Development of the Head written by Philippa H. Francis-West and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craniofacial development is a multistep and intricate process initially involving a number of inductive interactions that control neural and neural crest development, which are followed by a series of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that control outgrowth, patterning, and skeletal differentiation. Certain aspects of craniofacial development are unique developmental processes in higher vertebrates. First, in higher vertebrates the cranial neural crest, in contrast to the trunk neural crest, gives rise to the skeletal structures. These skeletal elements include those comprising mem brane bone and secondary cartilage, which with the exception of the clavicle are tissue types found exclusively in the head in higher vertebrates. Second, with the exception of the tongue, the origin of the musculature is distinct from other regions of the body. The body and tongue muscles are formed from the segmented epithelial somites whilst the head musculature is formed from unsegmented paraxial and prechordal mesoderm. Furthermore, the signalling cascades that control myogenic differentia tion appear to be distinct as determined by gene expression and the response of myogenic cells to growth factors. Finally, the neurogenic placodes, which give rise to the sensory organs and some cranial ganglia, are only found in the head. Over recent years, there have been significant advances in our knowledge of the molecular proc esses that control craniofacial development in a number of animal models. This has given insight into the genes that control many aspects of head development from the initial induction of the head to the final stages of differentiation.

Book Craniofacial Development and Growth

Download or read book Craniofacial Development and Growth written by Mitch Pittman and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craniofacial growth is a complex phenomenon that involves the enlargement and differentiation of hard and soft tissues that are characterized by cephalocaudal and allometric designs. It involves the basic mechanisms underlying the post-natal growth of the cranium. There are two prominent ways in which the basic craniofacial bone pattern is laid during embryonic development. The first method of craniofacial development is a highly coordinated process under a tight genetic control and environmental influence. For managing the patients in the best possible manner, it is essential to understand the primary concepts related with the growth and development of the craniofacial skeleton. The craniofacial skeleton develops naturally as a result of different developmental events, which include brain growth and development, optic pathway development, speech and swallowing development, airway and pharyngeal development, muscle development, and tooth development and eruption. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the study of craniofacial development and growth. It will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.

Book Investigating Postnatal Ontogeny in the Craniofacial Complex of Human Juveniles

Download or read book Investigating Postnatal Ontogeny in the Craniofacial Complex of Human Juveniles written by Amber Wheat and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have analyzed the developmental processes contributing to craniofacial variation from genetic, evolutionary, biomechanical and forensic perspectives, yet no study has clearly demonstrated the exact anatomical processes that occur in the craniofacial complex during postnatal growth to establish ultimate adult morphologies. Furthermore, previous research has not evaluated how endocranial bones (i.e., the ethmoid and sphenoid) play a role in postnatal craniofacial growth. Thus, while researchers have hypothesized that the long postnatal period of continued growth contributes to the high amount of variation observed in adult facial variation, this has yet to be shown empirically. The presented research uses cranial data obtained from 299 computer tomographic (CT) scans of juvenile heads to document the growth changes that take place in the mid-face to establish adult human craniofacial variation. The growth trajectories of five developmentally independent regions of the face were studied: the frontonasal module, the left and right maxillary modules, the sphenoid module, and the ethmoid module. This study examined: 1) if developmental modules of the face remain proportional to each other throughout postnatal growth; 2) which modules of the face experience the most shape change during postnatal growth; and 3) if males and females have different growth trajectories of the five modules under study. Results of analyses demonstrate clear distinctions between the sexes in growth patterns, as well as between the modules. Analyses within each module indicate that shape changes are occurring locally, while all of the units of the face, with the exception of the ethmoid, are remaining in relatively the same positions throughout growth. Results also reveal that males and females display different growth trajectories for the five modules under investigation. This study applies current hypotheses of postnatal ontogeny to a human skeletal sample of known age and sex, providing support for the early onset of craniofacial variation and differential growth trajectories for males and females. The implications of this study provide important information for our current understanding of postnatal facial growth.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of this investigation demonstrate the existence of sexual dimorphism in the growth of the human craniofacial complex. Sex differences are primarily allometric and derive from heterochronic influences. The pattern of sexual dimorphism presented in this study is the product of an early culmination of female craniofacial growth and of an extension of male craniofacial growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental defects may be the physical expression of genetic defects, and so they can often be seen in a variety of syndromes associated with malformations of organs. However, dental defects are often not recognized, identified, nor characterised despite representing a possible diagnostic sign for an undiagnosed condition. This book addresses this gap by providing an understanding of dental genetics and its developmental biology counterpart. With approximately seventy well-illustrated examples, the authors present the clinical oro-facial manifestations accompanying various syndromes, providing the necessary knowledge for diagnostic purposes, as well as giving insight into recent development for each specific condition. The clarity and format of this book make it an ideal support guide both in the clinic and while conducting research. Comprehensive examination of dento/oro/craniofacial anomalies Well-illustrated examples Presented in a compact, easy to use format

Book Bone Health and Osteoporosis

Download or read book Bone Health and Osteoporosis written by United States Public Health Service and published by . This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.
