Book On the Formation of Vortex Breakdown Bubbles when Imparting Swirl to Conical Diffusers

Download or read book On the Formation of Vortex Breakdown Bubbles when Imparting Swirl to Conical Diffusers written by P. Frawley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve the efficiency of wide angled conical diffusers, it is sometimes necessary to impart swirl to the flow. When this swirl is of sufficient severity, a bubble occurs at the axis. This in turn causes blockage and the pressure recovery coefficient drops. This is undesirable. This paper aims at obtaining an understanding of the mechanism of vortex breakdown using Laser Doppler Anemometry, and flow simulation using computational techniques. The diffuser examined has a double conical angle of 40 deg and an area ratio of 4:1. The entry Reynold's number is maintained at 28.4 x 10 3. The parameters being examined are wall pressure distribution axial and tangential velocity profiles and finally kinetic energy of turbulence. The investigation throws light on the mechanics of vortex breakdown and reavels the probability of stalled flow creating the bubble formed at the axis using excess swirl. (Author).

Book Effect of Swirl on Conical Diffuser Performance

Download or read book Effect of Swirl on Conical Diffuser Performance written by Arbind Prasad and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with an experimental investigation of the effect of swirl on conical diffuser performance. Data on the gross performance of conical diffusers are reported. The effect of swirl on the separation phenomena in a conical diffuser has been studied. Success has been achieved in avoiding the separation completely through swirl in conical diffusers of a divergence angle as large as 35 degrees. An optimum swirl angle has been found for each diffuser. Turbulence level measurements are taken and they indicate that turbulence is not a dominant factor in eliminating separation. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of Two Large Annular Diffusers with Swirling and Distorted Inflow

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Two Large Annular Diffusers with Swirling and Distorted Inflow written by United States. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Scientific and Technical Information Office and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two annular diffusers downstream of a nacelle-mounted fan were tested for aerodynamic performance, measured in terms of two static pressure recovery parameters (one near the diffuser exit plane and one about three diameters downstream in the settling duct) in the presence of several inflow conditions. The two diffusers each had an inlet diameter of 1.84 m, an area ratio of 2.3, and an equivalent cone angle of 11.5 deg, but were distinguished by centerbodies of different lengths. The dependence of diffuser performance on various combinations of swirling, radially distorted, and/or azimuthally distorted inflow was examined. Swirling flow and distortions in the axial velocity profile in the annulus upstream of the diffuser inlet were caused by the intrinsic flow patterns downstream of a fan in a duct and by artificial intensification of the distortions. Azimuthal distortions or defects were generated by the addition of four artificial devices (screens and fences). Pressure recover data indicated beneficial effects of both radial distortion (for a limited range of distortion levels) and inflow swirl. Small amounts of azimuthal distortion created by the artificial devices produced by only small effects on diffuser performance. A large artificial distortion device was required to produce enough azimuthal flow distortion to significantly degrade the static pressure recovery. (Author).
