Book An Investigation of Solid Propellant Combustion in Standard and High Acceleration Environments

Download or read book An Investigation of Solid Propellant Combustion in Standard and High Acceleration Environments written by Michael Abraham and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonmetallized double-base and composite propellant, metallized composite propellant, and ammonium perchlorate (AP)/binder sandwich combustion were studied in standard and high acceleration environments. Experimental techniques used were high speed motion pictures, tow-color schlieren, laser schlieren, and centrifuge mounted combustion bombs. It was found for double-base propellant that the temperature increased continuously from the surface into the visible flame. Acceleration induced burning rate augmentation occurred and resulted in elimination of the visible flame. Acceleration apparently modified the surface or subsurface zones. AP/binder sandwich combustion was also found to be acceleration sensitive with binder flow-AP interactions proposed as the mechanism. Composite propellants burned with local diffusion flames to pressures as slow as 100 psi. A comparison is made between AP/binder sandwich combustion and propellant combustion. (Author).

Book Nonmetallized Composite Propellant Combustion

Download or read book Nonmetallized Composite Propellant Combustion written by David Willis Netzer and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of nonmetallized composite propellant combustion in standard and high acceleration environments was made. Pressed ammonium perchlorate (AP) pellets of varying purity, AP/binder sandwich burners, and propellant strands were employed. AP/binder sandwich burners where studied in an optically equipped centrifuge and color schlieren were taken in a conventional combustion bomb. Ascast and dewetted propellants were used to study the effect of preferential interfacial reactions on burning rate acceleration sensitivity. Results are discussed for the effects of acceleration, pressure, AP purity, and propellant composition on the burning rate. (Author).

Book An Investigation of Experimental Techniques for Obtaining Particulate Behavior in Metallized Solid Propellant Combustion

Download or read book An Investigation of Experimental Techniques for Obtaining Particulate Behavior in Metallized Solid Propellant Combustion written by R. G. Cramer and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuing investigation is being conducted to develop techniques which can be used to obtain quantitative data that can be used to relate solid rocket propellant composition and operating environment to the behavior of solid particulates within the grain port and exhaust nozzle. The techniques employed are high speed motion pictures of propellant strand burners and slab burners in a cross-flow environment, SEM analysis of post-fire residue (strand, slab, and motor), determination of D32 across the exhaust nozzle using measurements of scattered laser light, and holograms of burning propellant strands and slabs in a cross-flow environment. In addition, work has been initiated to develop automatic data retrieval methods for obtaining particle size distributions from holograms taken of the combustion of solid propellants. Actual particle size of burning aluminum particles were obtained in high speed motion pictures by using high intensity rear illumination of the burning propellants to eliminate the flame envelopes surrounding the burning particles. Measurements of diffractively scattered light were successfully made for determination of changes in D32 across a solid propellant rocket motor exhaust nozzle. However, to date, propellant composition and grain geometry have significantly limited the range of obtainable data. Two-dimensional motors have been successfully employed to obtain good quality holograms of propellant burned in a cross-flow environment. A Quantimet 720 has been used in an initial effort to obtain particle size distributions from a photograph taken of a reconstructed hologram.

Book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion

Download or read book Theory of Solid Propellant Nonsteady Combustion written by Vasily B. Novozhilov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Book Effects of Normal Acceleration on Transient Burning rate Augmentation of an Aluminized Solid Propellant

Download or read book Effects of Normal Acceleration on Transient Burning rate Augmentation of an Aluminized Solid Propellant written by G. Burton Northam and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instantaneous burning rate data for a polybutadiene acrylic acid propellant, containing 16 weight percent aluminum, were calculated from the pressure histories of a test motor with 96.77 sq cm of burning area and a 5.08-cm-thick propellant web. Additional acceleration tests were conducted with reduced propellant web thicknesses of 3.81, 2.54, and 1.27 cm. The metallic residue collected from the various web thickness tests was characterized by weight and shape and correlated with the instantaneous burning rate measurements. Rapid depressurization extinction tests were conducted in order that surface pitting characteristics due to localized increased burning rate could be correlated with the residue analysis and the instantaneous burning rate data. The acceleration-induced burning rate augmentation was strongly dependent on propellant distance burned, or burning time, and thus was transient in nature. The results from the extinction tests and the residue analyses indicate that the transient rate augmentation was highly dependent on local enhancement of the combustion zone heat feedback to the surface by the growth of molten residue particles on or just above the burning surface. The size, shape, and number density of molten residue particles, rather than the total residue weight, determined the acceleration-induced burning rate augmentation.

Book Cinematographic Study of Solid Propellant Combustion in an Acceleration Field

Download or read book Cinematographic Study of Solid Propellant Combustion in an Acceleration Field written by Raymond Charles Schroeder (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of an acceleration field on the combustion rate of a composite solid propellant when directed normally and into the burning surface was recorded by high speed cinematography. One-half to one-inch long propellant strands with 1/4-in by 1/4-in cross sections were burned and photographed at pressures of 200 psi and 500 psi while subjected to normal acceleration fields of 0 g and 75 g. Aluminized propellants were primarily utilized in this investigation; however, the experimental apparatus and the techniques used proved suitable for general propellant studies. Propellants burning in acceleration fields of 0 g and 75 g were successfully filmed at frame rates of 4500 pictures per second. The designed magnification factor and the quality of the motion pictures produced provided an optical definition of particle sizes to 100 microns. This film resolution allowed an optical analysis of the acceleration effects on propellant burning rates. (Author).
