Accordingly, the task of increasing the effectiveness of the learning processes can be performed precisely through the help of various technological methods. Modern education cannot be safely separated from technology without losing some possible advantages. For this reason, there is a strong need to research and estimate the perception of technology use within educational processes and how technology can support learning.As an outcome of recent educational reforms in Saudi Arabia, technology has become imperative element to support learning. It was previously thought in Saudi Arabia that technology was not crucial to learning; however, modern education that does not make use of digital technology is at a decided disadvantage. Moreover, engagement with technology is now an important factor in the teaching and learning process. This research investigated English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' use of technology to support learning, willingness to use technology to support learning and their perceptions of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and its usefulness in their teaching.After a small pilot study helped shape the methodology to be used, a mixed method approach was adopted using a larger pool of participants. This methodology combined elements of quantitative and qualitative research approaches such as online survey and interviews. Explanatory sequential design, based on quantitative and qualitative data, conducted to find out teachers perceptions, factors and relationships related to technology implementation.Despite willingness to use technology tools that promote the learning process, the actual level of technology use in the classroom can be quite varied. The participating EFL teachers, who generally lacked sufficient skills and experience in technology, had a reduced use of technology in learning processes. However, EFL teachers working in technical colleges in Saudi Arabia were willing to use technology to support learning, as they were more proficiently skilled. They demonstrated extensive willingness to implement technology in the EFL classroom.This study found that EFL teachers' use of technology is positively associated with their perceptions of willingness to use that technology and with the perceptions of TPACK they employ as a way of understanding its pedagogical use. The study also found that the technology supported effective strategies for learning EFL. Despite the validation that the TPACK framework was not supported by factor analysis, the perception of TPACK of EFL teachers in Saudi Arabia was enough to develop a relevant understanding of the fundamental role of technology in the teaching process. Moreover, EFL teachers with extensive experience in practising English language in a Western society had a significantly higher perception of TPACK than teachers lacking such experience. There was an inconsistent relationship between EFL teachers' TPK, TCK and PCK and their perception of TPACK framework. However, EFL teachers usually considered their perception of TPACK sufficient to conduct different teaching experiments in the EFL classroom.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Because of its far reaching impact on many aspects and functions of educational institutions and its potential benefits for educators, the Internet has been the topic of much interest within the educational community. Ways of using the Internet as a medium to deliver instructional materials and to access digital libraries are reshaping how college campuses function, including the creation of virtual campuses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the Internet by teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Saudi Arabian colleges of technology. A secondary purpose was to explore the relationship of teachers' use of the Internet with a selected set of variables. These variables included EFL teachers' personal characteristics, their level of access to the Internet, their perceived computer and Internet expertise, and their perceptions of the Internet as a tool for instruction. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers' (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to collect data on the population. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all EFL teachers (N=203) in the four main colleges of technology in Saudi Arabia (located in Riyadh, Abha, Jeddah, and Dammam) during the 2004-2005 academic year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 81%. The survey stage was followed by phone interviews with a random sample of 15 teachers. Results from both the quantitative and qualitative domains of the study indicated that the participants had rarely used the Internet, particularly for instructional purposes. Indeed, they reported more use of the Internet for personal than for instructional purposes. Participants had high levels of Internet use in mainstream Internet services such as e-mail and the World Wide Web. While they had positive perceptions of the use of the Internet as a pedagogical tool, they had relatively limited levels of access to and expertise with computers and the Internet. Positive correlations existed between teachers' level of use of the Internet and five independent variables, including computer and Internet expertise, place of access to the Internet, perceptions of the Internet, computer experience, and Internet experience. Multiple regression analysis indicated that only expertise, place of access, and Internet experience had a significant predictive value of teachers' use of the Internet. The results indicated that approximately 39% of the variance in Internet use was explained by the independent variables included in this study. A major conclusion of the study was that to increase Internet use, EFL teachers need to be given more Internet training. In-service training needs to be a top priority, with a primary focus on using the Internet as a tool for teaching and learning. Also, based on the study's findings, it was recommended that policy-makers maintain EFL teachers' positive perceptions of the pedagogical use of the Internet by spending more money on increasing the computer infrastructure in the colleges of technology in Saudi Arabia, on improving Internet access and services, and on educating both teachers and students with respect to issues concerning the cultural appropriateness of materials available on the web.

Shedding light on the perceptions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in the context of English education in primary and secondary schools has become crucial. Three Saudi EFL teachers' perspectives of English language instruction in Saudi Arabian primary and secondary schools were examined using a case study methodology. Using Zoom semi-structured interviews, respondents provided a comprehensive image of English classrooms and curriculum in Saudi Arabian schools, as well as the challenges associated with the classes.

Many university instructors in Saudi Arabia have also started using their own mobile technology in their teaching and for communication with students. But there is limited research on Saudi Arabian university faculty's experiences of using mobile technology in their teaching practices. This mixed-method study adapted the R2D2 (Reading, Reflecting, Displaying, and Doing) model (Bonk & Zhang, 2006, 2008) to investigate faculty's uses of mobile technology in Saudi Arabian universities, including both instructors' own teaching and learners' activities. An online survey, with both Likert-scale items and open-ended questions, was conducted to collect data on university instructors' (a) general experiences in integrating mobile technology in their teaching practices as well as for learner activities, (b) their attitudes toward mobile learning, (c) the specific learning activities in different categories as per the R2D2 model, in and out of class and for communication with students. A total of 372 instructors participated the survey, 241 of them completed the entire survey. Participants represented the 25 public universities in Saudi Arabia, with a highly diverse profile in terms of age, gender, academic major, geographic location, and years of teaching experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with six selected participants, representing different age groups, academic majors and teaching experiences to further investigate instructors' experiences and contributing factors to their uses of mobile technology for teaching and learning in Saudi Arabian universities. The results of this mixed-method research study (Qualitative and quantitative data were collected and used) concluded that the majority of instructors showed their eagerness and willingness to use mobile technology in their teaching practices.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, University of Carthage (ISLT), course: English studies, language: English, abstract: This dissertation intended to (a) elucidate, through a mixed-method research design, how the university EFL learners and teachers utilize available ICT tools/applications and (b) measure the impacts of this usage on the learners’ proficiency and academic achievements. Data were collected in three phases: surveys, tests, and observations. The sample consisted of 428 senior students, 40 EFL teachers, and 10 head teachers, recruited from five public universities in Yemen. Of this initial cohort, 131 students were singled out for performance analysis. Again, within this subsample, 20 informants were kept under observation. Two types of data (quantitative and qualitative) were collected. The quantitative data were analyzed by applying appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics by using SPSS. Qualitative data were analyzed subjectively, establishing patterns and categories. Results indicated that most of the ICTs were used on an ad hoc basis. While there were no statistically significant impacts of using ICT on the learners’ performance, the respondents hold the view that such appliances offer some opportunities for engagement, interactivity, and motivation to learn English formally and informally. The findings brought to the foreground some pedagogic and linguistic implications and useful points for further research.

Book excerpt: This study has been undertaken using an interpretive methodology in order to examine the socially constructed views of Saudi EFL teachers and their decision-making with regards to the appropriate cultural models for EFL textbooks in Saudi public schools. The study also examines the factors affecting the teachers' views and how they apply their beliefs in their classrooms. In addition, the study will also examine if the Saudi EFL teachers have any concerns about what they have been through and examined and accordingly investigates how they address their pedagogical decision-making in the classroom. Moreover, this study is interested in looking at EFL teachers as local teachers teaching a global language. In view of the exploratory nature of this study and its context-specificity, the naturalistic orientation of interpretive and social constructivism as an epistemological stance were selected. The research design employed a concurrent mixed methods design using an adapted version of Cress well (1996). In this study, the participants were Saudi Arabian EFL teachers from one city in Saudi Arabia teaching in all of the three public education levels (primary, intermediate and secondary). The data collected were both qualitative (interviews and open-ended questionnaires) and quantitative (close-ended questionnaires). For the interviews, 14 male and female teachers equally interviewed, whereas for the questionnaires 280 male and female participated. The data collection of both data qualitative and quantitative occurred at the same time during my field journey in 2009 in Saudi Arabia. I used the SPSS descriptive statistics for the analysing the quantitative data and used exploratory content analysis for the qualitative data. The study findings revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers were not satisfied with the cultural content currently promoted in the Textbooks as they inappropriately contradict the local cultural values. Thus, they believe that for a better cultural content, the textbooks should therefore include a mixture of different cultures that do not mismatch with the local. And as they are controlled by some educational and social factors, they are limited to practice what they think is appropriate to apply in the classroom, therefore, their decision-making in this regards to some extent are to be controlled. In addition, the findings of the current study revealed that the Saudi EFL teachers show their openness to other cultures based on their glocal position as local Saudis teaching a global language. The conclusion of the study has some suggestion and implications to improve the cultural content of the EFL textbooks as well as implications for the EFL teachers in general and their practices and decision-making with regards to the textbook. Furthermore, the study proposed a model for the appropriate EFL textbooks for each educational level and can be applied locally in the Saudi context and globally for other similar context around the world.
