This book deals with the important problem of radio noise, its sources, whether manmade or natural, over the known range of frequencies. Certain of these contributions will interest the communicator, enabling him to estimate the potential interference from various types of sources. Other contributions deal mainly with scientific problems, such as the origins and significance of certain characteristic noise radiations. The contributors to this book are experts on the various phases of radio noise. The individual chapters derive from papers presented at a Conference on Radio Noise, held at Harvard College Observatory, April 22, 1958.

The research included a detailed theoretical study of the generation of synchrotron noise by auroral electrons spiralling in the earth's magnetic field. Experiments were conducted to detect iongyro modulation on radar returns from field aligned irregularities such as those associated with the aurora. A model of auroral radar reflections is discussed which hypothesizes acoustic waves excited by current streams which flow in the ionization enhanced regions at the base of auroral forms. A study was made of the effects on radio wave propagation of high velocity streams of electrons such as those in the solar wind. (Author).

Book excerpt: Existing experimental evidence is shown to be consistent with the idea that auroral backscatter arises from turbulent fluctuations of electron density as described by a Kolmogoroff spectrum. An inner scale of turbulence of one meter is shown to be consistent with the experimental data. It is further shown that the scatter cross section for frequencies greater than 1000 Mc cannot be accurately predicted. A brief summary of an analysis of auroral backscatter amplitude distribution is presented. Occasionally Rice type amplitude distributions are obtained at 49.7 Mc. These distributions admit of only one explanation - that on occasion, over relatively large regions and for intervals of only a few minutes, the electron density in the auroral ionosphere is in excess of 2 x 10 to the 7th power electrons per cubic centimeter.
