Book An Investigation of Quasi static Behavior High Cycle Fatigue and Final Fracture Behavior of Aluminum Alloy 2024 and Aluminum Alloy 2219

Download or read book An Investigation of Quasi static Behavior High Cycle Fatigue and Final Fracture Behavior of Aluminum Alloy 2024 and Aluminum Alloy 2219 written by Satish Vasudevan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fatigue is one of the very important factors that causes failure in structures used in aircraft construction. Prevention of fatigue failure has been of concern in the aircraft industry for many years. There have been developments to put forth new materials such as AA2024 and AA2219. Along with new materials, there has also been new fabrication processes, improved design concepts such as the inception of fruction stir welding (FSW). Considering the fact that aluminum is extensively used in the aircraft industry, this research study involves testing and analysis of two conventional aluminum alloys namely a friction stir welded aluminum alloy 2024-T8 and aluminum alloy 2219-T62 in simple tension and in cyclic fatigue. Uniaxial tensile tests and cyclic stress amplitude controlled fatigue tests were carried out on samples from both the materials at stress ratios of R=0.1 and R=0.3. The conjoint influence of weld parameter and intrinsic microstructural features on hardness, tensile response and high cycle fatigue response was studied. The microscopic mechanisms governing quasi-static fracture and high cycle fatigue fracture are rationalized in light of intrinsic microstructural features of the alloy, deformation characteristics of the alloy microstructure, and nature of loading. All the tests were carried out at room temperature at the University of Akron. This study will provide useful and usable information relevant to the fatigue behavior of the aluminum alloys chosen."--Abstract.

Book Some Observations on Loss of Static Strength Due to Fatigue Cracks

Download or read book Some Observations on Loss of Static Strength Due to Fatigue Cracks written by Walter Illg and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static tensile tests were performed on simple notched specimens containing fatigue cracks. Four types of aluminum alloys were investigated: 2024-T3 (formerly 24S-T3) and 7075-T6 (formerly 75S-T6) in sheet form, and 2024-T4 (formerly 24S-T4) and 7075-T6 (formerly 75S-T6) in extruded form. The cracked specimens were tested statically under four conditions: unmodified and with reduced eccentricity of loading by three methods. Results of static tests on C-46 wings containing fatigue cracks are also reported.

Book Flaw Growth Behavior in Thick Welded Plates of 2219 T87 Aluminum at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures

Download or read book Flaw Growth Behavior in Thick Welded Plates of 2219 T87 Aluminum at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures written by Royce G. Forman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axial load fatigue and fracture tests were conducted on thick welded plates of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy to determine the tensile strength properties and the flaw growth behavior in electron beam, gas metal arc, and pulse current gas tungsten arc welds for plates 6.35 centimeters (2.5 in.) thick. The tests were conducted in room temperature air and in liquid nitrogen environments. Specimens were tested in both the as-welded and the aged after welding conditions. The experimental crack growth rate were correlated with theoretical crack growth rate predictions for semielliptical surface flaws.

Book The Influence of Hold Times on Fatigue Crack Growth of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book The Influence of Hold Times on Fatigue Crack Growth of Aluminum Alloys written by H. L. Marcus and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the research on fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys are described in three general areas. The first relates the influence of hold time at an underload that follows an overload on the fatigue crack growth retardation behavior of the 7075 and 2219 aluminum alloys. A very distinct effect on retardation with hold time is observed. The effect is microstructure dependent with the time dependence behavior extending over a longer period for the high strength materials. This well-defined time dependence clearly shows that lifetime predictions based on accelerated short hold time tests could be very non-conservative. The influence of humidity was also determined using vacuum as a reference environment. The second aspect of the research investigated the nature of the residual displacement, d, that leads to the crack closure phenomena. The last major emphasis was to investigate how gaseous environments interact with fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys. Combined AES/SIMS studies were made of fracture surfaces taken from fatigue crack growth specimens fatigued in vacuum and subsequently exposed to and fatigued in a range of environments.
