Book An Investigation of Leader Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor of Employee Engagement and Retention

Download or read book An Investigation of Leader Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor of Employee Engagement and Retention written by Raed K. Shenaq and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rapidly evolving workplace, employee retention is crucial to an organization’s success because retaining competent and experienced employees can be a critical aspect for the competitive advantage and performance of organizations in the long term. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among leader’s emotional intelligence (EI), employee engagement (EE), and employee retention (RET) from a subordinate’s perspective among a sample of employees under the direction of a supervisor/leader. In particular, the relationship between the leader’s EI and EE was investigated, and the relationship between EE and their RET was investigated. Additionally, statistical analysis was used to investigate if the relationship between leader EI and RET is moderated and/or mediated by EE. The sample (N=273) participated in an online survey with some demographic items and items measuring leader EI (as measured by the 16-item Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, (WLEIS) EE (as measured by the 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, UWES-9), and RET (as measured by the three- item intention to remain scale from Armstrong-Stassen & Ursel, 2009). Survey data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Although this study is not conclusive, it promotes a sense of urgency for organizations to view their process of retraining effective employees in a holistic way (internal as well as external). Further research should examine the leaders’ perceptions of their own EI, the subordinates’ EE, and RET.

Book A quantitative investigation of the impact of emotional intelligence and SOAR based capacity of leaders on employee retention

Download or read book A quantitative investigation of the impact of emotional intelligence and SOAR based capacity of leaders on employee retention written by John S. Sofia and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need to retain highly skilled and specialized talent in today’s dynamic and highly competitive global business environment. The challenge is not only selecting, recruiting, and hiring the right talent, but also making sure that talent is retained for as long as possible after the hire date. The intention of employees to stay employed is critical and a strategic business differentiator for organizational success due to the high cost of recruitment, the intrinsic loss of knowledge and expertise, and the often nondocumented and not understood loss of productivity. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the relationship among emotional intelligence (EI), SOAR and retention (RET) among a sample of professionals who are actively working with a direct supervisor. A sample of 352 participants completed the 16-item Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale to estimate their leaders’ EI, the 19-item SOAR profile to estimate their leaders’ SOAR-based capacity, and the Intention to Remain scale to selfreport their RET. This study was designed as a quantitative cross-sectional survey design to investigate three research questions and test three study hypotheses regarding the EI and SOAR-based capacity of leaders, and the effects leader EI and leader SOAR have on subordinate RET. Participants were either active members of an Alumni Association of a Midwestern University, or current working and former professional contacts of the researcher. Survey data were analyzed using general linear model (GLM) statistical analysis. Results found statistical support for leader EI and leader SOAR as positive predictors of subordinate RET. Results also found SOAR moderated the relationship between EI and RET in males but not females. The implications of this study suggest that employers and higher education instructors must embrace the challenge of identifying the right talent with the relevant EI abilities and SOAR capabilities (soft skills) required for today’s business needs such as: critical thinking, collaboration, active listening, interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and communication. In addition to collaborating with higher education on the development and the teaching of EI and SOAR soft skills, organizational leaders should create a culture that encourages all employees to have inclusive and meaningful conversations. This can be accomplished utilizing the SOAR capabilities of active listening, engagement, communication, and the creation of meaningful dialogue around strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results.

Book Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Styles

Download or read book Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Styles written by Eniola O. Olagundoye and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2019 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All around the world, information technology is evolving at an alarming rate, and it could be challenging keeping up with the growing changes that we are witnessing with it. This paper explored the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles among information technology professionals. Does emotional intelligence predict leadership style and do leadership styles predict emotional intelligence components? A total of 185 participants were involved in this study. The leadership styles, which are comprised of transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant, were measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire - MLQ 5X (Bass & Avolio, 1995). The emotional intelligence components, which are comprised of perception of emotion, managing own emotions, managing others’ emotions and utilization of emotion, were measured by the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test -- SSEIT (Schutte et al., 2009). The demographic areas controlled in this study include gender, age, ethnicity, education, and tenure. Multiple regression was conducted on each of the seven hypotheses in this study, and it was determined that transformational leadership style and transactional leadership style were predictors of perception of emotion, managing others’ emotions and utilization of emotion. This study also revealed that transformational leadership style was a predictor of managing own emotions. Surprisingly, transactional leadership style was not a predictor of managing own emotions. As expected, there was no significant correlation discovered between passive-avoidant leadership style and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the results showed that emotional intelligence was a predictor of both transformational and transactional leadership styles. This study discovered that gender was a significant variable, and females scored higher than males in the emotional intelligence component of managing others’ emotions. The findings in this study coincide with the body of literature that exists, which revealed positive relationships between emotional intelligence components and transformational and transactional leadership styles.

This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the reader with a stimulating tapestry of essays exploring the nature of personal autonomy, self-determination, and agency, and their role in human optimal functioning at multiple levels of analysis from personal to societal and cross-cultural. The starting point for these explorations is self-determination theory, an integrated theory of human motivation and healthy development which has been under development for more than three decades (Deci & Ryan, 2000). As the contributions will make clear, psychological autonomy is a concept that forms the bridge between the dependence of human behavior on biological and socio-cultural determinants on the one side, and people’s ability to be free, reflective, and transforming agents who can challenge these dependencies, on the other. The authors within this volume share a vision that human autonomy is a fundamental pre-condition for both individuals and groups to thrive, and that without understanding the nature and mechanisms of autonomous agency vital social and human problems cannot be satisfactory addressed. This multidisciplinary team of researchers will collectively explore the nature of personal autonomy, considering its developmental origins, its expression within relationships, its importance within groups and organizational functioning, and its role in promoting to the democratic and economic development of societies. The book is aimed toward developmental, social, personality, and cross-cultural psychologists, towards researchers and practitioners’ in the areas of education, health and medicine, social work and, economics, and also towards all interested in creating a more sustainable and just world society through promoting individual freedom and agency. This volume will provide a theoretical and conceptual account of the nature and psychological mechanisms of personal motivational autonomy and human agency; rich multidisciplinary empirical evidence supporting the claims and propositions about the nature of human autonomy and capacities for self-regulation; explanations of how and why different psychological and socio-cultural conditions may play a role in promoting or undermining people’s autonomous motivation and well-being, discussions of how the promotion of human autonomy can positively influence environmental protection, democracy promotion and economic prosperity.
