Book excerpt: An analytical technique for investigating transport aircraft handling qualities is exercised in a study using models of two such vehicles, a Boeing 747 and Lockheed C-5A. Two flight conditions are employed for climb and directional tasks, and a third included for a flare task.The analysis technique is based upon a "structural model" of the human pilot developed by Hess. The associated analysis procedure has been discussed previously in the literature, but centered almost exclusively on the characteristics of high-performance fighter aircraft. The handling qualities rating level (HQRL) and pilot induced oscillation tendencies rating level (PIORL) are predicted for nominal configurations of the aircraft and for "damaged" configurations where actuator rate limits are introduced as nonlinearites. It is demonstrated that the analysis can accommodate nonlinear pilot/vehicle behavior and do so in the context of specific flight tasks, yielding estimates of handling qualities, pilot-induced oscillation tendencies and upper limits of task performance. A brief human-in-the-loop tracking study was performed to provide a limited validation of the pilot model employed.

Book excerpt: A study of the handling qualities of large airplanes in the approach and landing flight phase was performed. An in-flight simulation experiment utilizing the USAF-AFWAL/Calspan Total In-flight Simulator was carried out to gather data for the analysis effort. A one-million pound statically unstable airplane model was used as a baseline about which variations were made. The primary variables were relative pilot position with respect to center of rotation, command path time delays and phase shifts, augmentation schemes and levels of augmentation. Both longitudinal and lateral-directional characteristics were investigated. The experiment design, conduct of the experiment, and analysis of the data are described. Results are presented in the form of pilot ratings, pilot comments and various analysis techniques. The results indicate that the approach and landing task with very large airplanes is a fairly low bandwidth task. Low equivalent short-period frequencies and relatively long time delays can be tolerated. As the pilot position is moved aft towards and then behind the center of rotation, pilot position is moved aft towards and then behind the center of rotation, pilot ratings are degraded. A multiloop analysis of pitch attitude and altitude control gave insight into this pilot position phenomenon.

Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.

Low equivalent short period frequencies and relatively long time delays can be tolerated only when the pilot is located a considerable distance forward of the center of rotation. As the pilot position is moved aft towards and then behind the center of rotation, as is the space shuttle, pilot ratings are degraded. A multi-loop analysis of pitch attitude and altitude control gave insight into this pilot position phenomenon. The control problem experienced by the pilots, when seated behind the center of rotation, tended to occur at low altitude when they were using visual cues of rate of sink and altitude. These configurations also lack the initial normal acceleration cue from pitch acceleration that conventional large airplane configurations possess. A direct lift controller improved final flight path control of these shuttle-like configurations.
