Book An Investigation of Inadvertent Arming of MK 82 and M 117 General Purpose and MK 82 Snakeye Bombs

Download or read book An Investigation of Inadvertent Arming of MK 82 and M 117 General Purpose and MK 82 Snakeye Bombs written by Gordon S. Thorsvold and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the inadvertent arming of MK-82 and M-117 general purpose bombs and MK-82 Snakeye bombs was initiated after a review of flight test film from A-7D munition certification tests indicated that the bomb nose fuze was often arming when it was not intended to arm or before it was intended to arm. Data collected from approximately 45 flight test missions indicated that the primary variables which contributed to the high rate of inadvertent arming were ejector foot design, arming solenoid operation, and the wire routing procedures. The tests revealed that, by routing the arming wire on the lower side of the ejector foot and by use of the smaller design ejector foot, the rate of inadvertent arming can be substantially decreased but not eliminated. The tests also revealed that the operation of the arming solenoids in the safe mode was extremely unreliable. (Author).

Download or read book Safe Arming Times for MK 81 MK 82 MK 83 MK 84 and M117 Low Drag Bombs written by Roy G. Saffold and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results of a study conducted to determine the arming time that should be recommended for each combination of aircraft type, release condition, bomb type, and post-release maneuver, as well as a discussion of the methods used to arrive at the recommended arming times. The aircraft types considered were A-4, A-6, A-7, and F-4. The release conditions considered were level attitude with no post-release maneuver, and dives followed by application of a 4G recovery force within two seconds after release of the last bomb. The tabulations presented do not replace the tactical manual recommendations, but rather present supplementary information for those interested. (Author).

Book An Aerodynamic Database for the Mk 82 General Purpose Low Drag Bomb

Download or read book An Aerodynamic Database for the Mk 82 General Purpose Low Drag Bomb written by L. V. Krishnamoorthy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drag database of the Mk 82 general purpose low drag bomb, the primary gravity weapon in the RAAF inventory, has some shortcomings in the quality and traceability of data, and in the variations due to configurational differences. Extensive testing of scaled models in a wind tunnel and an aeroballistic range facility have resulted in establishihg estimates of the drag of a clean Mk 82 bomb as well as the incremental drag of add ons such as lugs and fuzes. These results, together with data obtained from full scale bomb drop trials, have been used to produce drag estimates for a full range of bomb configurations and release conditions. It is recommended that these data be incorporated into the mission computer of the weapon delivery system of the updated F111C aircraft. Furthermore it is recommended that the accuracy of these data be validated when the updated aircraft undergoes ballistic accuracy verification flight trials.

Book Wind Tunnel Tests of Three Candidate MK 82 Snakeye Bomb Replacement Configurations

Download or read book Wind Tunnel Tests of Three Candidate MK 82 Snakeye Bomb Replacement Configurations written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static and pitch damping moment stability coefficients are presented for three candidate MK 82 Snakeye Bomb replacement configurations as functions of Mach number. The normal force coefficient slope, and the center of pressure are also determined for each design. All coefficients are measured at a Mach number of .13 in the subsonic tunnel of AFATL and at Mach numbers of .5 and .8 in the transonic pilot tunnel of the NSRDC. The restoring moment stability coefficient, normal force coefficient slope, and center of pressure of the fixed fin design are also measured at transonic Mach numbers at AEDC. The inflatable stabilizer retarder configurations are found to have more static and pitch damping stability than the fixed fin design.

Book Measurement of Drag Characteristics of Mk 82 General Purpose Low Drag Bomb Using an Aeroballistic Range Facility

Download or read book Measurement of Drag Characteristics of Mk 82 General Purpose Low Drag Bomb Using an Aeroballistic Range Facility written by L. V. Krishnamoorthy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is described to determine the drag characteristics of the Mk 82 low drag bomb. This involves launching half scale models from the DSTO gas gun facilities at Port Wakefield and measuring the trajectories by photogrammetric methods. The drag coefficients were calculated from the measured positional data using a three degrees of freedom parameter estimation method. The estimated drag characteristics of various Mk 82 GPLD store configurations will form the basis of a database for use with the updated F-111C aircraft.

Book excerpt: The release envelopes were studied for the Mark 81 and Mark 82 bombs in the retarded and unretarded modes. Release curves are presented for release velocities between 200 and 600 knots. Aircraft pullout limits and line of sight between pilot and target limits are indicated on the release curves. The time of fall of the bomb is also indicated on the curves.

Book MK 82 Bomb Ejection Sensitivity Test Report

Download or read book MK 82 Bomb Ejection Sensitivity Test Report written by Donald R. Barr and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the data obtained in the Bomb Ejection Sensitivity Tests, conducted at White Sands during the summer of 1978, is presented. Preliminary reduction of the data was performed by the Marine Aviation Detachment at Point Mugu, California. It is concluded that rack position had significant effects on bomb impact means during these tests. The effects of bomb rack positions increases CEP about 50 percent over what could be expected if those effects were not present. (Author).

Book A Dispersion Technique for the MK82 Bomb

Download or read book A Dispersion Technique for the MK82 Bomb written by Mark O. Schlegel and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic analyses and wind tunnel test data were used to investigate a new dispersion technique for general purpose and cluster bombs released on skids from cargo aircraft. Using the present approach, all bombs tend to impact in the same small area. The new technique involved the addition of a drag plate to the rear of the bomb fin assembly. The use of two sizes of plates (plus the standard configuration) would provide three ballistic trajectories for the bombs mounted on one skid. (Author).

Book Vibration Test MK 82 Bomb Stamp Strap

Download or read book Vibration Test MK 82 Bomb Stamp Strap written by Edward J. Kowalski and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stamp Strap Program requires that Live All-Up round Configuration MK-82 Bombs be shipped by aircraft for rapid deployment. There is, however, concern that the vibration caused by the aircraft on the MK-82 bombs with fins may have an effect on the safety of personnel and aircraft. Vibration tests were conducted on palletized inert MK-82 bombs with fins IAW a modified Method 5020.1 vibration test of Federal Test Method Standard No. 101. Although the vibrations developed during aircraft shipments may not be as severe as those developed during the tests, there is concern whether damage could occur to the propellant, igniter, squib, fuze or if preignition could occur in shipment.
