Download or read book An investigation into the role faith plays in political decision making through the eyes of Christians in Parliament All Party Group members written by Joshua Bell and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 2:1 68%, University of Lincoln, course: Religion and Politics, language: English, abstract: This research paper aimed to find out the extent to which faith plays a part in the political decision making of Christian MPs. The MPs who were used in this study were from Christians in Parliament All-Party Group. The desire to investigate this topic derives from a deep personal interest in politics, combined with a sense of intrigue towards the influence of faith. Interviews took place with seven MPs, in order to question them about the role of their Christian faith as they work within the political arena. These interviews took place in London and consisted of nine questions, dealing with three concise topics; the Christians in Parliament group, personal influences of faith and the future of religion and politics. Amongst a great deal of interesting data, there were a number of key themes that can be drawn from this research. Christian MPs have a unique pressure upon them which derives from their faith and having to balance this in their job as a politician. In response to this pressure, this paper has found that MPs are determined in their endeavours to keep the Christian faith embedded in British society. Also, this paper has highlighted the great extent to which faith impacts individual MPs decision making. Overall, this research has furthered understanding of the impact of faith on Christian MPs and the extent to which this affects their decision making processes. It has enabled us to recognise the constant conflict faced by Christian MPs. This research has also raised awareness of the challenges for Christian members, whilst highlighting the debate regarding the extent to which religion continues to play a part in politician’s decision making. As well providing a compelling insight, this work is a platform for deeper research into this area of study.

Book Christianity and Party Politics

Download or read book Christianity and Party Politics written by Martin Steven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity and Party Politics aims to discuss and evaluate the contemporary relationship between party politics and religion. The book focuses on the important role of the Church in both electoral politics and public policy formulation in the twenty first century, and argues that contrary to the established secularisation argument generally applied in Europe, religion continues to be a powerful influence, particularly within British politics. Steven begins by examining the basics of electoral and party behaviour, how religious affiliation has traditionally influenced the way people choose to vote, and how recent surveys have suggested it continues to do so. Moving on to discuss how this affects the behaviour of party politicians, the role of the Christian church as an interest group is analysed; to what extent are these major societal institutions continuing to influence public policy decisions? Broadening the debate out to the international context, the work evaluates how the relationship between party politics and religion has been affected by global factors, the 'war on terror' for example. This discussion is developed through analysing the influences on the way in which Christian groups choose to lobby and influence public policy. Steven suggests that increasing European integration is forcing Christian groups to become more pro-active in their approach, to combat the decline in the more 'automatic' domestic influence they previously enjoyed. In relation this to the influence of American politics is analysed, debating whether tactics from the more pluralist US system being adopted by Church leaders elsewhere? Providing a valuable and long overdue contribution to the field, this work will provide readers with a detailed knowledge of how the worlds of politics and religion interact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not a secret that the political system in the United States is broken. Unfortunately, many Christians are ambivalent about, or worse yet, contributors to that dysfunction. Many know they should do something but don't know what to do or how to do it. Drawing on insights from history, theology, and culture, Worshiping Politics reframes the relationship between faith and politics as one of intentional formation instead of divisive decision-making. When we focus on how we are formed as people and the church in relationship to our various communities instead of what we think and believe in relation to culture and society, it changes the way we engage the world. Unlearning our faulty emphasis on the power of our own intellect and learning how to be formed in grace and love for the world through our everyday lives just might make a different kind of politics possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic increase in religiously motivated political activity in the United States since the early 1980s has spawned an increased scholarly awareness of the relationship between religion and politics. The rise of such groups as the Moral Majority, the Christian Coalition, and the Family Research Council attests to this growing intersection between politics and religion. Correspondingly, the amount of scholarly writing in this field has increased significantly. This volume compiles overviews of the existing research in religion and political behavior. Designed as a research and reference tool, this work includes over four hundred annotated bibliographic entries for books and journal articles by political scientists and sociologists. These sources encompass a wide variety of aspects concerning the relationship between religion and political behavior. The entries provide information on the theoretical basis, methodology, and result of each study. Entries are indexed by author, subject, and title.

Download or read book Faith in Democracy written by Jonathan Chaplin and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the place of faith in public life in the UK? Beyond ‘secularism’ that seeks to relegate faith to the margins of public life, and a ‘Christian nation’ position that seeks to retain, or even regain, Christian public privilege, there is a third way. Faith in Democracy: Framing a Politics of Deep Diversity calls for an approach that maximises public space for the expression of faith-based visions within democratic fora while repudiating all traces of religious privilege. It argues for a truly conversational space, reflecting theologically on the contested concepts at the heart of the current debate about the place of faith in British public life: democracy, secularism, pluralism and public faith.

Book Political Engagement as Biblical Mandate

Download or read book Political Engagement as Biblical Mandate written by Paul Hanson and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays that looks at the infusion of public debate and religious arguments with particular focus on American public forum. With the current climate of argument as to the maturing of our culture into a post-Christian secularism and the increase in religious and ideological diversity, the free expression of religious ideas in public debate exacerbates civic tension and undermines a society's ability to solve its most urgent problems. This book seeks to make the case that religiously informed thought has played and can continue to play a constructive role in the public forum over domestic and international issues that are weighted with moral content.

Book Religious Voting in Western Democracies

Download or read book Religious Voting in Western Democracies written by José Ramón. Montero and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic exploration of the role of religion and religiosity in electoral politics in Catholic, Protestant, and religiously mixed countries across Western Europe and in the United States. The chapters approach the relationship between religion, religiosity, and electoral behaviour from a variety of different angles. They include analyses of secularization trends; comparative studies of the links between vote choice and religiosity; longitudinal single country studies; and a novel discussion of the theoretical underpinnings of the politicization of religion that provides a radically new framework for the analysis of the role of religiosity in election studies. The volume shows that despite the expectations of secularization theory, religiosity remains relevant when casting votes. It also argues that the traditional notion of religious cleavage should be replaced with the more accurate idea of religious voting. Chapters draw on National Election Studies data and comparative datasets such as European Values Studies (EVS), European Social Surveys (ESS), and European Election Studies (EES) to empirically test expectations regarding religious voting. The results show that variations in religious voting are conditional on both the agency of political and ecclesiastical leaders when politicizing religious issues and the legacies of previous societal and political religious conflicts, regardless of whether the original party system had a predominant religious cleavage.

Book Christians in Active Politics

Download or read book Christians in Active Politics written by Yokoniah Mvula and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Christians may be uncomfortable to think of Jesus as being political, since the word "politics" or "political" has evolved to have negative overtones and connotations in our world today, particularly in Africa, where this monograph from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Malawi has originated. Christians often argue that their commission or job description does not include the political process, which is the way a society conducts its public affairs. However Jesus, beginning with his temptation as in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, showed the people who would follow him what it means to do God's will. The third temptation, conceived of in this study as a political temptation for power, is the rational behind the arguments made in this study, which begins by positing that the message of Jesus was not politically neutral and therefore Christianity, as a super culture must be active in all sectors affecting social concerns, if it is to truly be the change agent who Christ believes it to be. It goes on to define and describe what it means to say that the message of Jesus was political and lays out the biblical, theological, ethical, and experiential rationale for Christians' active participation in the secular political arena.

Book Christianity in Politics

Download or read book Christianity in Politics written by Christine Millard and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion affects politics at multiple levels and demonstrating those influences is vital to understanding religion's entanglement upon politics. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative data to shed light on this relationship. First, it employs using the 2014 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey conducted by Pew Research. This study indicates shows how individuals in Christian traditions and denominations support political parties in the United States. Looking at the historical context of these denominations and considering other important demographics at both the traditional and denominational levels, religion plays a significant role in how individuals support political parties. Moving away from the individual, Pew's results are compared to denominational leadership structures and training to see whether these influences political parties they were found not to play a significant role. Lastly, using content analysis, churches and their leaders' communications are examined, and a typology is created to examine how religious leaders and churches communicate politically to influence their members. Leadership and structures do demonstrate some relationship to how and what religious organizations communicate. By analyzing religion at these multiple levels, this study demonstrates the different ways in which religion influences politics and provides the broader picture of how this relationship is manifested in American politics.

Book excerpt: In Faith in Politics? the former Bishop of Oxford, Richard Harries, addresses our concerns by re-examining the roots of our political values. He considers the various strands of thought that have had a bearing on political philosophy over time, such as utilitarianism and liberalism, and how each contribute to contemporary views of the good society.
