Book The Relevance of Executive MBA Programs

Download or read book The Relevance of Executive MBA Programs written by Janis W. Dietz and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1997-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment in executive education has grown steadily since its inception during the last century. Several studies have attempted to measure the effectiveness of executive programs; prior research has indicated that some programs lack relevance. This study addressed the topic from the perspective of corporations, whose future executive education decisions are affected by the relevance of current programs, and program alumni. In a partial replication of a 1959 Harvard study, which queried graduates of 39 residential programs, I surveyed the 1993-1995 executive MBA graduates of four schools: UCLA, University of Colorado, University of Utah, and University of Washington. The main research question was: Are executive education programs meeting the needs of their mid-career students ? In addition to the above, the changing workplace prompted the following queries: Is there a difference between the satisfaction of the students with the programs in 1959 and now? Are the programs affected by lack of security in the workplace. Are people using the EMBA to change employers? Do sponsoring companies use the skills learned? Do women have a problem with the 'glass ceiling'? In addition to collecting the surveys, I interviewed the four program directors, 10 corporate executives whose responsibilities include executive education, and 24 of the 157 alumni who returned the questionnaire. Frequency distribution, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the survey data. The major findings were: EMBA students today are satisfied with the relevance of their education; Students are dissatisfied with schools that employ professors with outdated or inadequate teaching skills; Instability in today's workplace is prompting some people to change jobs or go into their own business once their EMBA is completed; Corporations will continue to invest in these programs, but there is more specific succession planning in conjunction with the career path expected for the employee; There continues to be little ethnic diversity in the programs.

Book Educating the Scholar Practitioner in Organization Development

Download or read book Educating the Scholar Practitioner in Organization Development written by Deborah A. Colwill and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organization Development (OD) is a young social science. Little has been written on the intentional development of OD professionals. As a young field of inquiry it is important to understand how the future leaders of the field of OD are being developed. The focus of this work explores the education of scholar practitioners in OD. The research upon which this document is based examined the impact that professional research doctoral programs (affiliated with the field of OD) had on the learning and professional development of select doctoral graduates. Alumni reported important elements of their educational experience that contributed to their professional and personal growth. The nature of these educational elements suggest processes or methods of teaching that may be transferable to training OD professionals in a broader context outside of higher education. Even more directly this research provides well informed feedback to administrators and faculty of professional research doctorate programs from the alumni about their educational experience. This feedback could be used to advance both program and course development in universities that offer these types of degrees. The intended audience of this work includes practitioners of OD, professors of OD and management, faculty and administrators of doctoral education, talent management and leadership development professionals, and adult educators.

Book The Production of Knowledge

Download or read book The Production of Knowledge written by William H. Starbuck and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Starbuck has been one of the leading management researchers over several decades. In this book he reflects on a number of challenges associated with management and social science research - the search for a 'behavioral science', the limits of rationality, the unreliability of many research findings, the social shaping of research agendas, cultures and judgements. It is an engaging, chronologically structured account in which he discusses some of his own research projects and various methodological debates. This is a feisty argument from someone who has been fully engaged with all aspects of research - carrying out research programmes, evaluating research, tirelessly questioning the assumptions and claims of social science research, and never avoiding the awkward theoretical or practical challenges that face organizational researchers. Well written, provocative and unusual, this quasi autobiographical account will inform and entertain, and be a valuable guide to current and future research students.

Book Organizational Realities

His work spans three decades and encompasses a whole variety of issues, yet it has never been collected together in one place. This book does just that - bringing together his most seminal writings, prefaced by a personal reflection on some of the themes and conclusions of that emerge from this, and the context in which they were written. What emerges from this is a picture of organizations and their strategies that emphasizes the characteristics of real-life human beings: their idiosyncratic preferences, their distrust for each other, their struggele for dominance, their personal interests which don't always coincide with the interests of the organization, and the internal politicking and contests between interest groups that take place in organizations. Some chapters review research literature, some report empirical findings, some propose conceptual reformulations, and some offer advice to managers. This book will be a unique guide to the work of an influential thinker in management and organization studies, and will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students of management, strategy, and organization studies.
