Book The Quality of Assessments

Download or read book The Quality of Assessments written by Harold David Black and published by Scottish. This book was released on 1989 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish Vocational Education Council's National Certificate has its origins in the Scottish Education Department's (SED's) decision to rationalize the provision of certification for non-advanced further education in Scotland under one body. This report presents case studies of assessments of students performed by colleges in Scotland, based on the innovative assessment design associated with the National Certificate. This paper is the second of two reports that discuss the findings of the SED's research project on Assessment in the National Certificate Development Program. Focus is on the quality of assessment for summative purposes; that is, the procedures and instruments that were used to decide whether a student should be credited with having successfully completed a National Certificate module. Topics addressed include the assessment model itself as well as its application to mathematics (in a case study of one college), stock control (in a case study of two colleges), communication (in a case study of one college), and electronics (in a case study of two colleges). The components of the system that seem most responsible for the quality of assessments include the institutions and procedures that have responsibility for the policy at the national level; the process that determines the form and function of module descriptors; and the policies and practices within colleges, departments, classrooms, and workplaces where the assessments actually take place. Twenty-three figures and tables are included. (TJH)

Book excerpt: We are pleased to announce a new series of environmental history readers, suitable for students. Comprising essays selected from our journals, Environment and History and Environmental Values, each inexpensive paperback volume will address an important theme in environmental history, combining underlying theory and specific case-studies. The first volume, Bio-invaders, investigates the rhetoric and realities of exotic, introduced and 'alien' species. The book comprises a number of general essays, exploring and challenging common perceptions about such species, and a series of case studies of specific species in specific contexts. Its geographical coverage ranges from the United Kingdom to New Zealand by way of South Africa, India and Palestine; and the essays cover both historical and recent introductions.

Book Maori Mothers and Pre school Education

Download or read book Maori Mothers and Pre school Education written by Geraldine McDonald and published by Wellington : New Zealand Council for Educational Research. This book was released on 1973 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This enquiry explores one of the most inspiring educational developments in recent years -- the spread of pre-school education amongst the Maori population. It examines the effects of community setting on the characteristics of voluntary groups, and illustrates the vitality of the Maori way of life and the necessity to take Maori cultural patterns into account when seeking explanations of what is observed. By treating pre-school groups not in isolation but as part of society, this study adds to what we know about race relations in New Zealand, and contributes to an understanding of the experiences and feelings of Maori women. Numerous and well-chosen quotes from the mothers serve to illuminate such pre-school matters as enrolment, and recruitment, leadership, within pre-school groups, parent education, the degree of contact that husbands have with pre-school groups, and what the mothers see as the effect of pre-school education on themselves and their children. This is a research monograph in the best sense -- systematic, analytical and theoretically interesting. Those interested in Maori life as well as those concerned with pre-school education should find it not only useful but also inspiring."--Inside front cover.

Download or read book Reconstituting the Constitution written by Caroline Morris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All nation states, whether ancient or newly created, must examine their constitutional fundamentals to keep their constitutions relevant and dynamic. Constitutional change has greater legitimacy when the questions are debated before the people and accepted by them. Who are the peoples in this state? What role should they have in relation to the government? What rights should they have? Who should be Head of State? What is our constitutional relationship with other nation states? What is the influence of international law on our domestic system? What process should constitutional change follow? In this volume, scholars, practitioners, politicians, public officials, and young people explore these questions and others in relation to the New Zealand constitution and provide some thought-provoking answers. This book is recommended for anyone seeking insight into how a former British colony with bicultural foundations is making the transition to a multicultural society in an increasingly complex and globalised world.

Download or read book Curriculum Integration written by James A. Beane and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quintessential resource on the important topic of curriculum integration! Going well beyond other books on this subject, James Beane details the history of curriculum integration and analyzes current critiques to provide a complete theory of curriculum integration. He defines curriculum integration as a comprehensive approach rather than simply “rearranging subjects.” Using many classroom examples, he explains the relationship between curriculum integration and the disciplines of knowledge. The approach set forth in this groundbreaking volume translates into a democratic vision of general education that transcends the current standards movement. “Offers clear and understandable examples of what curriculum integration means, how it can work, and how it fits a model of democratic education.” —Choice “In this time of conservative attacks on progressive education, it is crucial that we defend and extend democratic policies and practices. James Beane has been one of the most important figures in articulating democratic possibilities in schools. Curriculum Integration shows why he so deserves our respect. It provides a clear and insightful picture of the arguments and realities of democratic curriculum development and teaching.” —Michael W. Apple, University of Wisconsin–Madison “Jim Beane urges us to completely rethink how we pursue intellectual inquiry, as well as who makes the decisions in the classroom and what our ultimate goals are. Taken seriously, as it ought to be, [his] approach could revolutionize American education.” —Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards and Beyond Discipline “Beane writes directly with a passion that reflects long-in-the-making and deeply rooted convictions about education, youth, and democracy.... This book is a critically important resource . . . and it will remain so for years to come.” —John H. Lounsbury, National Middle School Association

Book Climate Change and Tourism

Download or read book Climate Change and Tourism written by World Tourism Organization and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2008 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication contains the key proceedings and technical report of the Second International Conference on Climate Change and Tourism, held in Davos, Switzerland, 1-3 October 2007. The Davos Declaration and the summary of the conference debates demonstrate a clear commitment of the tourism sector to address climate change issues, and provide concrete recommendations for actions. The extensive technical report included in this publication was commissioned to an international team of experts by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It provides a synthesis of the state of knowledge about current and future likely impacts of climate change on tourism destinations around the world, possible implications for tourist demand, current levels and trends in GHG emissions from the tourism sector, and an overview of policy and management responses adopted by the key stakeholder groups (international organizations, public administrations, the tourism industry) with respect to adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. This publication is principally aimed at the tourism industry and government organizations at the different levels, who will have the primary responsibility of developing mitigation and adaptation strategies to respond to the challenges that global climate change will bring to the tourism sector. It also constitutes an important tool for international agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and financial institutions.
