Book The Effect of Simulated Oral Conditions on Surface Roughness and Friction Properties of Surface treated and Non surface Treated Nickel Titanium Archwires

Download or read book The Effect of Simulated Oral Conditions on Surface Roughness and Friction Properties of Surface treated and Non surface Treated Nickel Titanium Archwires written by Mary Becker and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of simulated oral conditions (storage in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) with bracket-related load deflection at 37±1°C for 12 weeks) on surface-treated and non-surface treated NiTi archwires. Three types of NiTi wires were tested: non-coated NiTi wire, nitrogen-treated NiTi wire, and rhodium-coated NiTi wire. Wire segments from each NiTi wire type underwent surface roughness measurements and friction testing in the as-received condition (control group) and following exposure to a simulated oral environment for 12 weeks (experimental treatment group). A profilometer was used to measure average roughness in three areas of each wire segment. After profilometry, a universal mechanical tester was used for friction testing. Each wire segment was pulled through a bracket in a passive configuration for 5 mm and the minimum, maximum, and mean of the top 10% of the load was calculated. Three representative specimens from each NiTi wire type in each condition were viewed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to provide qualitative surface topography analysis. Results of the study showed that all wires stored in simulated oral conditions (PBS at 37±1°C with bracket-related load deflection) were significantly rougher (p 0.05) than their counterparts in the as-received condition. Rhodium-coated wires were found to be significantly rougher (p

Besides servicing the orthodontic training programs, the book also - investigates the interactions of orthodontic materials with other dental materials as well as hard tissues in the oral cavity,- gives a background to allow for proper material selection for efficient orthodontic mechanics,- treats the issues of biocompatibility, cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of materials.

Book Design of Shape Memory Alloy SMA Actuators

Download or read book Design of Shape Memory Alloy SMA Actuators written by Ashwin Rao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short monograph presents an analysis and design methodology for shape memory alloy (SMA) components such as wires, beams, and springs for different applications. The solid-solid, diffusionless phase transformations in thermally responsive SMA allows them to demonstrate unique characteristics like superelasticity and shape memory effects. The combined sensing and actuating capabilities of such materials allows them to provide a system level response by combining multiple functions in a single material system. In SMA, the combined mechanical and thermal loading effects influence the functionality of such materials. The aim of this book is to make the analysis of these materials accessible to designers by developing a "strength of materials" approach to the analysis and design of such SMA components inspired from their various applications with a review of various factors influencing the design process for such materials.

Discusses material characterization processes and results for a number of newer SMAs Incorporates numerical (FE) simulation and integration procedures into commercial codes (Msc/Nastran, Abaqus, and others) Provides detailed examples on design procedures and optimization of SMA-based actuation systems for real cases, from specs to verification lab tests on physical demonstrators One of the few SMA books to include design and set-up of demonstrator characterization tests and correlation with numerical models

Book Coated and Uncoated Nickel titanium Archwires

Download or read book Coated and Uncoated Nickel titanium Archwires written by Loveland, Kelcey Loveland and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of exposure to bracket-related load deflection on the mechanical properties and surface characteristics of esthetic coated and uncoated nickel titanium archwires. Two types of coated archwires were tested: one with a rhodium ion coating and another with a polymer coating. Corresponding uncoated wires of the same size were also tested. These four different wires were divided into treatment groups based on exposure to bracket-related load deflection and storage in PBS at 37±1°C. A three-point bend test in DI water at 37±1°C was performed on specimens at three time points: 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. Unloading forces at 1, 2, and 3 mm of deflection were recorded. After 12 weeks exposure, three representative specimens from each treatment group along with untested wires were viewed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to provide a qualitative surface topography analysis. Results of the present study showed that no significant differences (p > 0.05) in unloading force were present in wires exposed to bracket-related load deflection. However, significant differences were observed between coated and uncoated wire types (p
