In both the fundamental and applied chapters it was deemed necessary that the successful aspects of ion exchange operation be included. In addition, it was equally important to describe the problems and the inherent complexities encountered in the setting up of an ion exchange process. Wherever possible the economic factors were described realistically.

Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment is an imperative requirement in order to meet effluent quality standards before wastewater can be discharged directly into the rivers, streams and the ocean. Together with the rapid development of industry and society, large volumes of wastewater with hundreds of toxins and impurities, if not treated properly, can severely affect humans and environmental health through different manners such as drinking water contamination and habitat degradation. In particular, the excessive presence of phosphate in water encourages the growth of algae that then leads to eutrophication. Thus, wastewater treatment systems, including phosphate removal, are considered to be a princiapl tool to reduce the negative effects of wastewater. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the capabilities of two commercial ion exchange resins - Purolite A860S, Dowex 21K XLT and a low cost absorbent - steel furnace slag (SFS) on phosphate removal, and (ii) the effect of modification of these materials on phosphate removal capacities. In this study, two modified materials, Dowex 21K XLT_Cu and modified steel furnace slag (M-SFS) were developed from original Dowex 21K XLT and steel furnace slag respectively.

Book excerpt: The ion exchange properties of ceric phosphate were investigated including rates of reaction, distribution coefficients of alkali metals, capacity and column behavior of some elements. Ceric oxide was shown to possess anion exchange properties in acid solution and cation exchange properties in basic solution. The two compounds have properties analogous to, but not identical with, zirconium oxide and phosphate. Cesium and barium were successfully separated on a short column of ceric phosphate at room temperature. These inorganic ion-exchangers show promise of providing additional means for effecting and widening the scope of radiochemical separations, an important and necessary consideration in the radioactivation analysis, of trace elements in ultrapure materials. Book excerpt: The extraction of apatite minerals is becoming more and more crucial with the depletion of high-grade ores. At the same time, many streams of waste are continuously being produced by the phosphate industry, including calcareous and siliceous waste rocks, clayey sludge and phosphogypsum. These waste products are produced in huge volumes reaching a ratio of between 5 to 10 tons of waste per each ton of concentrated phosphate. The management of these waste products is becoming a real issue in terms of growing public awareness and environmental and financial aspects. In addition, phosphate ores are known to contain other critical raw materials (CRM) such as rare earth elements and uranium. The recovery of these vital elements from phosphate waste may help to develop the needs of the green energy of the future and contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. In this Special Issue, insights related to the following aspects were studied: phosphate extraction and beneficiation, novel phosphate ores, the fine characterization of phosphate ores and waste, phosphoric acid production, critical raw material (CRM) recovery from phosphate ores and waste, reprocessing of phosphate wastes and finally the valorization and reuse of phosphate waste and phosphogypsum.
