Book The Evolution of Rhythm Cognition Timing in Music and Speech

Download or read book The Evolution of Rhythm Cognition Timing in Music and Speech written by Andrea Ravignani and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human speech and music share a number of similarities and differences. One of the closest similarities is their temporal nature as both (i) develop over time, (ii) form sequences of temporal intervals, possibly differing in duration and acoustical marking by different spectral properties, which are perceived as a rhythm, and (iii) generate metrical expectations. Human brains are particularly efficient in perceiving, producing, and processing fine rhythmic information in music and speech. However a number of critical questions remain to be answered: Where does this human sensitivity for rhythm arise? How did rhythm cognition develop in human evolution? How did environmental rhythms affect the evolution of brain rhythms? Which rhythm-specific neural circuits are shared between speech and music, or even with other domains? Evolutionary processes’ long time scales often prevent direct observation: understanding the psychology of rhythm and its evolution requires a close-fitting integration of different perspectives. First, empirical observations of music and speech in the field are contrasted and generate testable hypotheses. Experiments exploring linguistic and musical rhythm are performed across sensory modalities, ages, and animal species to address questions about domain-specificity, development, and an evolutionary path of rhythm. Finally, experimental insights are integrated via synthetic modeling, generating testable predictions about brain oscillations underlying rhythm cognition and its evolution. Our understanding of the cognitive, neurobiological, and evolutionary bases of rhythm is rapidly increasing. However, researchers in different fields often work on parallel, potentially converging strands with little mutual awareness. This research topic builds a bridge across several disciplines, focusing on the cognitive neuroscience of rhythm as an evolutionary process. It includes contributions encompassing, although not limited to: (1) developmental and comparative studies of rhythm (e.g. critical acquisition periods, innateness); (2) evidence of rhythmic behavior in other species, both spontaneous and in controlled experiments; (3) comparisons of rhythm processing in music and speech (e.g. behavioral experiments, systems neuroscience perspectives on music-speech networks); (4) evidence on rhythm processing across modalities and domains; (5) studies on rhythm in interaction and context (social, affective, etc.); (6) mathematical and computational (e.g. connectionist, symbolic) models of “rhythmicity” as an evolved behavior.

Book Rhythm Perception and Production

Download or read book Rhythm Perception and Production written by Peter Desain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer, designed for those interested in the perception of rhythm, provides readers with both an overview of recent research in the introductions to each section, and a broad selection of chapters dealing with more detailed studies. It consists of contributions by some of the most respected investigators in the fields of motor behaviour, timing control, music cognition and psychology and arose out of the 7th Workshop on Rhythm Perception and Production, held in Wassenaar in 1998.;The book begins with a discussion of more generic studies of timing and synchronisation, focusing on the two main methods of modelling timing behaviour (the modern complex dynamics approach and the older methods of analysis of covariance) and some progress is made towards an integration of these two historically conflicting approaches. It then moves on to consider rhythm perception and production in a wide variety of contexts, with a prticular focus on music and language. The individual contributions range from attempts to model the processes involved in tracking or synchronising to an external pulse to detailed studies of the ways in which the rhythmic complexities of real musical and linguistic behaviour (such as polyrhythmic drumming) are executed and perceived.

Download or read book Rhythm Music and the Brain written by Michael Thaut and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience and new tools of studying the human brain "live," music as a highly complex, temporally ordered and rule-based sensory language quickly became a fascinating topic of study. The question of "how" music moves us, stimulates our thoughts, feelings, and kinesthetic sense, and how it can reach the human experience in profound ways is now measured with the advent of modern cognitive neuroscience. The goal of Rhythm, Music and the Brain is an attempt to bring the knowledge of the arts and the sciences and review our current state of study about the brain and music, specifically rhythm. The author provides a thorough examination of the current state of research, including the biomedical applications of neurological music therapy in sensorimotor speech and cognitive rehabilitation. This book will be of interest for the lay and professional reader in the sciences and arts as well as the professionals in the fields of neuroscientific research, medicine, and rehabilitation.

Book Professional Rhythmic Skills

  • ISBN : 9780615538655
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Professional Rhythmic Skills written by Daniel Bukvich and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Bukvich's Professional Rhythmic Skills is a study in the fundamental subdivision and rhythmic techniques necessary for the success of all musicians at all abilities. A musician's weakness in rhythm or pulse is frequently cited as the primary reason for dismissal in major auditions. Yet skill in beat subdivision is a learned and nurtured ability. Improvement can be observed immediately and studied for a lifetime. In line with other major composers who have produced significant pedagogical materials like Zoltan Kodaly, Carl Orff, and Paul Hindemith Daniel Bukvich's materials offer a significant leap forward in the development of a codified system for teaching and improving rhythm. Designed primarily for use as supplemental materials for collegiate level ear training (aural skills) courses, this text can also be used in secondary education classroom settings and in individual private lessons.

Book Music and Child Development

Download or read book Music and Child Development written by J.Craig Peery and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I acknowledge a deep debt of gratitude to my coeditors: my wife Irene, and my friend and colleague Tom Draper. They have worked with diligence and insight to bring this work to completion. They have delegated the task of writing the Preface to me. As the scientific study of human development matures it is not only natural, but it is necessary to reach beyond understanding the ways humans develop capacities, to study the ways emerging capacities fit into the larger sphere of human undertakings. Music is one of the most significant of those endeavors. As I attend the several piano competitions that are on my agenda each year, and see children seated at the keyboard drawing forth the magnificent sounds of Bach, Chopin, and Ravel, I am always a little awed. Surely, it seems to me, the piano* is among the best of man's creations; the creative energies of great composers are among mankind's greatest expressions; and encouraging children to associate themselves seriously with both instrument and composer can be one of the great blessings to their young lives and, by association, to the larger society. Music touches the entire range of our lifespan on a daily basis. Involving chil dren with music and music training has high market, and common sense, validity. Parents understand intuitively that children will benefit, and their lives will be enriched, if they are influenced by music and music training.

Download or read book Music and Movement written by Jody Leigh Crollick and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Using the principles of Multiple Intelligence Theory and general concepts of kinesthetic perception, the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of formal music training and significant athletic experience on rhythmic (temporal) perception. The Rhythm Performance Test Revised was used to determine level of rhythmic ability in musically trained and non-musically trained individuals, as well as athletically trained and non-athletically trained individuals. It was found that those individuals with a combination of formal music training and athletic experience had better rhythmic perception, as compared to those without formal music training or athletic experience. In addition, it was found that participants with team sport experience had better rhythmic perception than those participants with individual sport experience, and there were no differences in rhythmic ability among woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists.
