Book An Investigation of Supersonic Combustion and Heterogeneous Turbulent Jet Mixing Related to the Design operation of Scramjets

Download or read book An Investigation of Supersonic Combustion and Heterogeneous Turbulent Jet Mixing Related to the Design operation of Scramjets written by Ian Thomas Osgerby and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical kinetic calculations of the combustion time in a constant area scramjet combustion (Mo=7) indicate reaction times 0.00001 secs., and show that the combustion process is usually controlled by diffusion. The mixing process in concentric fueld/air jets is investigated by means of integral forms of the equations of motion and slow mixing requires about 50 diameter. Initial contraction of the slow inner jet is predicted by the theory, and verified by experiment. The simulation of scramjet combustion conditions by a shock tunnel is considered feasible. (Author).

Download or read book Scramjets written by Mostafa Barzegar Gerdroodbary and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scramjet engines are a type of jet engine and rely on the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer to produce thrust. While scramjets are conceptually simple, actual implementation is limited by extreme technical challenges. Hypersonic flight within the atmosphere generates immense drag, and temperatures found on the aircraft and within the engine can be much greater than that of the surrounding air. Maintaining combustion in the supersonic flow presents additional challenges, as the fuel must be injected, mixed, ignited, and burned within milliseconds. Fuel mixing, along with the configuration and positioning of the injectors and the boundary conditions, play a key role in combustion efficiency. Scramjets: Fuel Mixing and Injection Systems discusses how fuel mixing efficiency and the advantage of injection systems can enhance the performance of the scramjets. The book begins with the introduction of the supersonic combustion chamber and explains the main parameters on the mixing rate. The configuration of scramjets is then introduced with special emphasis on the main effective parameters on the mixing of fuel inside the scramjets. In addition, basic concepts and principles on the mixing rate and fuel distribution within scramjets are presented. Main effective parameters such as range of fuel concentration for the efficient combustion, pressure of fuel jet and various arrangement of jet injections are also explained. This book is for aeronautical and mechanical engineers as well as those working in supersonic combustion who need to know the effects of compressibility on combustion, of shocks on mixing and on chemical reactions, and vorticity on the flame anchoring. Explains the main applicable approaches for enhancement of supersonic combustion engines and the new techniques of fuel injection Shows how the interaction of main air stream with fuel injections can develop the mixing inside the scramjets Presents results of numerical simulations and how they can be used for the development of the combustion engines

Book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion written by Gilles L. Hamelin and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the turbulent mixing of a sonic jet of helium discharging coaxially into a supersonic jet of air was made using a two dimensional mixing chamber. Volumetric concentration profiles were obtained and mass concentration and velocity along the jet centerline were plotted. The results indicated that both these vary inversely with the distance from the mixing origin raised to a four third power. Schlieren photography was applied in a semi-quantitative manner to confirm the validity of the above findings. This research project finds a potential application in the study and analysis of supersonic combustion ramjet engines. (Author).

Book Jet in Supersonic Crossflow

Book excerpt: Based on research into jets in supersonic crossflow carried out by the authors’ team over the past 15 years, this book summarizes and presents many cutting-edge findings and analyses on this subject. It tackles the complicated mixing process of gas jets and atomization process of liquid jets in supersonic crossflow, and studies their physical mechanisms. Advanced experimental and numerical techniques are applied to further readers’ understanding of atomization, mixing, and combustion of fuel jets in supersonic crossflow, which can promote superior fuel injection design in scramjet engines. The book offers a valuable reference guide for all researchers and engineers working on the design of scramjet engines, and will also benefit graduate students majoring in aeronautical and aerospace engineering.

Book High Resolution Measurements of Supersonic Mixing and Combustion in Coflowing Turbulent Jets

Download or read book High Resolution Measurements of Supersonic Mixing and Combustion in Coflowing Turbulent Jets written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of compressibility effects on the large scale structure and outer variable scaling laws of a coflowing turbulent jet was partially completed. Results showed distinct large scale structure and classical incompressible scaling where the convective Mach number has decreased to subsonic values. At supersonic convective Mach numbers no large scale structure was seen and incompressible scalings were dramatically modified. Experiments also showed strong effects due to oblique shock wave interactions with combustion in supersonic turbulent jets. OH PLIF imaging measurements comparing subsonic and supersonic jets documented striking differences in their mixing and combustion properties. Combined OH/CH PLIF imaging measurements found large differences in the combustion properties of jet flames created by small differences in the fuel injection design. A theoretical study of density effects due to combustion heat release on the outer variable scalings of turbulent shear flows was completed. This study produced a general methodology for predicting the changes in such quantities as growth rates, velocity decay, and entrainment and mixing rates due to heat release. Comparisons with measured heat release effects in the literature, including planar and axisymmetric jet flames as well as mixing layers, showed excellent agreement with this general approach.

Book Studies of Turbulent Mixing and Combustion in Supersonic Heterogeneous Flows

Download or read book Studies of Turbulent Mixing and Combustion in Supersonic Heterogeneous Flows written by Kenneth N. C. Bray and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was the development of analytical models of various flow configurations which can be used in the design of supersonic air-breathing propulsion systems. The work described in the report represents an extension of earlier studies in the program to conditions that exist in air-augmented rocket systems. These conditions vary according to the nature of the rocket propellant, as liquid propellants usually produce only gaseous fuel-rich combustion products whereas solid propellant rockets emit heterogeneous products which contain small combustible particles. The inclusion of particles produces significant effects upon reacting turbuelent flows, particularly when the particles themselves continue to burn. Some predictions of their behavior in a reacting flow field are presented. A series of systematic tests has been planned by which the experimental conditions proceed stepwise through conditions of increasing primary stream (rocket exhaust) complexity starting with a cold nonreactive gas and ending with a hot, reactive, heterogeneous mixture. The method permits the effects of temperature, of gaseous combustion and solid combustion upon a supersonic, reacting flow field to be isolated. Results obtained from the experimental tests are presented, and some conclusions are drawn from the data. (Author).
