Download or read book Continuum Mechanics and Linear Elasticity written by Ciprian D. Coman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-02 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intermediate book for beginning postgraduate students and junior researchers, and offers up-to-date content on both continuum mechanics and elasticity. The material is self-contained and should provide readers sufficient working knowledge in both areas. Though the focus is primarily on vector and tensor calculus (the so-called coordinate-free approach), the more traditional index notation is used whenever it is deemed more sensible. With the increasing demand for continuum modeling in such diverse areas as mathematical biology and geology, it is imperative to have various approaches to continuum mechanics and elasticity. This book presents these subjects from an applied mathematics perspective. In particular, it extensively uses linear algebra and vector calculus to develop the fundamentals of both subjects in a way that requires minimal use of coordinates (so that beginning graduate students and junior researchers come to appreciate the power of the tensor notation).

Download or read book Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics III written by G.S. Dulikravich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-11-20 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse Problems are found in many areas of engineering mechanics and there are many successful applications e.g. in non-destructive testing and characterization of material properties by ultrasonic or X-ray techniques, thermography, etc. Generally speaking, inverse problems are concerned with the determination of the input and the characteristics of a system, given certain aspects of its output. Mathematically, such problems are ill-posed and have to be overcome through development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. This volume contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Symposium on Inverse Problems in Engineering Mechanics (ISIP2001), held in February of 2001 in Nagano, Japan, where recent development in inverse problems in engineering mechanics and related topics were discussed. The following general areas in inverse problems in engineering mechanics were the subjects of the ISIP2001: mathematical and computational aspects of inverse problems, parameter or system identification, shape determination, sensitivity analysis, optimization, material property characterization, ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elastodynamic inverse problems, thermal inverse problems, and other engineering applications. These papers can provide a state-of-the-art review of the research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics.

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics Volume 1 written by C. S. Jog and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum mechanics studies the foundations of deformable body mechanics from a mathematical perspective. It also acts as a base upon which other applied areas such as solid mechanics and fluid mechanics are developed. This book discusses some important topics, which have come into prominence in the latter half of the twentieth century, such as material symmetry, frame-indifference and thermomechanics. The study begins with the necessary mathematical background in the form of an introduction to tensor analysis followed by a discussion on kinematics, which deals with purely geometrical notions such as strain and rate of deformation. Moving on to derivation of the governing equations, the book also presents applications in the areas of linear and nonlinear elasticity. In addition, the volume also provides a mathematical explanation to the axioms and laws of deformable body mechanics, and its various applications in the field of solid mechanics.
Download or read book New Analytic and Geometric Methods in Inverse Problems written by Kenrick Bingham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In inverse problems, the aim is to obtain, via a mathematical model, information on quantities that are not directly observable but rather depend on other observable quantities. Inverse problems are encountered in such diverse areas of application as medical imaging, remote sensing, material testing, geosciences and financing. It has become evident that new ideas coming from differential geometry and modern analysis are needed to tackle even some of the most classical inverse problems. This book contains a collection of presentations, written by leading specialists, aiming to give the reader up-to-date tools for understanding the current developments in the field.

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems of Finite Elasticity written by Tullio Valent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I present, in a systematic form, some local theorems on existence, uniqueness, and analytic dependence on the load, which I have recently obtained for some types of boundary value problems of finite elasticity. Actually, these results concern an n-dimensional (n ~ 1) formal generalization of three-dimensional elasticity. Such a generalization, be sides being quite spontaneous, allows us to consider a great many inter esting mathematical situations, and sometimes allows us to clarify certain aspects of the three-dimensional case. Part of the matter presented is unpublished; other arguments have been only partially published and in lesser generality. Note that I concentrate on simultaneous local existence and uniqueness; thus, I do not deal with the more general theory of exis tence. Moreover, I restrict my discussion to compressible elastic bodies and I do not treat unilateral problems. The clever use of the inverse function theorem in finite elasticity made by STOPPELLI [1954, 1957a, 1957b], in order to obtain local existence and uniqueness for the traction problem in hyperelasticity under dead loads, inspired many of the ideas which led to this monograph. Chapter I aims to give a very brief introduction to some general concepts in the mathematical theory of elasticity, in order to show how the boundary value problems studied in the sequel arise. Chapter II is very technical; it supplies the framework for all sub sequent developments.

Download or read book Computer Methods and Experimental Measurements for Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics VIII written by J. T. M. de Hosson and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of contact and surface problems in modern engineering and their combined effects has led to the Eighth International Conference on Computer Methods and Experimental Measurements for Surface and Contact Mechanics. Nowadays the importance of contact and surface problems in many technological fields is well understood: they are complex and inherently non-linear due to their moving boundaries and the different properties of materials, particularly along the contact surfaces. Structural components fail from wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue etc., that is to say affected and initiated by the surface conditions. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements. Their effect is of particular importance in the case of surfaces undergoing contact, a problem which is addressed throughout the book. Topics featured: Surface Treatment; Surface problems in Contact Mechanics; Fracture Mechanics; Coupled analysis and experiments; Thin Coatings; Thick Coatings; Contact Mechanics; Material Surface in Contact; Applications and Case Studies.
