Book An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Classic Reprint written by Bryan T. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona The availability and seasonality of water in a primarily arid region such as Grand Canyon National Park dictate the fact that water is a precious commodity, much in demand by man and the biota. The surface water resources of Grand Canyon are characterized by a situation in which intermittent streams predominate, a ground water table as such does not exist, rainfall is seasonal and highly variable, scattered perennial water sources are related to large spring systems which arise from predictable geologic formations, and other features. This situation is clearly at contrast to the permanent presence of the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon, or to the boo-plus inches of snow which may be recorded on the North Rim in a record winter. However, the key to water at Grand Canyon is its availability: the Colorado River is there but so inaccessible to everything with the exception of its most closely associated ecosystems of aquatic and riparian life that it is, for the most part, unavailable to the surrounding arid environment. Likewise, the North Rim snow must quickly melt, runoff, evaporate, and percolate into the extremely porous substrate. Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Assessment of Issues and Alternatives Associated With Proposed Ground Water Development Near Grand Canyon National Park at Tusayan, Arizona: Draft Congress can, and occasionally does, direct the nps to sell water. However, Congress generally attaches limitations to such sales. In the case of Tusayan, emergency water deliveries could be made only if: 1) the recipient provided important services to park visitors and was the only reasonably available source of such services; 2) the recipient had no other reasonable alternative source of water; and 3) there occurred no adverse environmental effect from providing the water. The nps may presently be at odds with its own policy as it satisfies Tusayan's thirst. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Water Resources Assessment Vol 1

Download or read book Water Resources Assessment Vol 1 written by Ecosystems Research Institute and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Resources Assessment, Vol. 1: Canyonlands National Park, Needles District and Adjacent Blm Lands Water required for repository construction and operations may be taken from the Colorado River or tributaries and aquifers which feed it. Depending on the amount of water diverted and its source, volume and quality of surface and groundwater resources within the park could be affected. Recreational use is high in the Colorado River with at least park visitors per year. The construction and operation of the repository will introduce many more people into the area, thereby potentially increasing recreational use both in the Colorado River and all areas adjacent to and within the park. This additional human activity will increase erosion and waste leading to potential deterioration of the water sources in the park. The prehistoric and historic flow regimes for Walnut Canyon as well as their effect upon the associated vegetation are not well documented or understood. Since the turn of the century, hydrologic conditions have changed due to construction of dams and other water diversions. Concomitantly, changes in riparian and aquatic habitat and composition have been cm-going Brian This study endeavors to understand this complex hydrologic-vegetative system through field research, resurvey of past studies, and synthesis. Book excerpt: The Santa Cruz River that once flowed through Tucson, Arizona is today a sad mirage of a river. Except for brief periods following heavy rainfall, it is bone dry. The cottonwood and willow trees that once lined its banks have died, and the profusion of birds and wildlife recorded by early settlers are nowhere to be seen. The river is dead. What happened? Where did the water go. As Robert Glennon explains in Water Follies, what killed the Santa Cruz River -- and could devastate other surface waters across the United States -- was groundwater pumping. From 1940 to 2000, the volume of water drawn annually from underground aquifers in Tucson jumped more than six-fold, from 50,000 to 330,000 acre-feet per year. And Tucson is hardly an exception -- similar increases in groundwater pumping have occurred across the country and around the world. In a striking collection of stories that bring to life the human and natural consequences of our growing national thirst, Robert Glennon provides an occasionally wry and always fascinating account of groundwater pumping and the environmental problems it causes. Robert Glennon sketches the culture of water use in the United States, explaining how and why we are growing increasingly reliant on groundwater. He uses the examples of the Santa Cruz and San Pedro rivers in Arizona to illustrate the science of hydrology and the legal aspects of water use and conflicts. Following that, he offers a dozen stories -- ranging from Down East Maine to San Antonio's River Walk to Atlanta's burgeoning suburbs -- that clearly illustrate the array of problems caused by groundwater pumping. Each episode poses a conflict of values that reveals the complexity of how and why we use water. These poignant and sometimes perverse tales tell of human foibles including greed, stubbornness, and, especially, the unlimited human capacity to ignore reality. As Robert Glennon explores the folly of our actions and the laws governing them, he suggests common-sense legal and policy reforms that could help avert potentially catastrophic future effects. Water Follies, the first book to focus on the impact of groundwater pumping on the environment, brings this widespread but underappreciated problem to the attention of citizens and communities across America.
