Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Course of Clinical Instruction in Surgery, at the Pennsylvania Hospital: Delivered November 1st, 1848 IN commencing any course of instruction, custom has decreed that a little time should be taken up by the teacher in making known his views or opinions on subjects connected with his course, which shall serve as a sort of introduction between his auditors and himself; and in obedience to this custom, in coming before you this day as a teacher of Surgery, I beg to ask your attention to a few brief remarks on the organization of our Hospital and its means of clinical instruction - the nature of the instruction it is proposed to give - the classes of cases which will be most frequently presented to you - together with some desultory observations on operations and operative surgery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Course on the Principles and Practice of Surgery, in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College: Session of 1846-47 The constitution is also varied, in different individuals; according to age, sex, condition in life, mode of living, occu pation, physical and moral training, and in the same person from week to week, or from day to day, precisely as the ascertained laws which govern the operation of agents upon the system are conformed to or transgressed - there being a necessary connection and mutual dependence among all the organs of the body, and also particular relations between them and the objects of inanimate nature. This connexion and dependence, and these relations, can never be infringed without suffering. Man cannot escape these laws. They pertain to his existence; they are the ordinances of the Creator himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture to the Course of the Principles and Practice of Surgery, in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College, for the Session of 1849-50 IN meeting you for the first time ln' this edifice, I feel the occasion to be one of deep and peculiar interest. It constitutes an epoch in the history of the College, which will be impressed upon your memory through life, and remain upon the tablet of our hearts as an ever-abiding memento of this morning's inter view. In extending to you the greetings of the opening session, and indulging __in the felicitations which pertain to the first occupation of this very convenient and splendid edifice, I cannot refrain from paying a parting tribute to the comparatively humble building in which this College had its origin. It was there that this institution was cradled, it was there that any strength which it now possesses was acquired, and consequently it shall ever be regarded by us as a locality of great interest. But when memory calls up the once familiar countenances, the many {heartfelt greetings, the instruction there imparted and the pleasant inter course had with each other, and with those who are now occupying posts of usefulness and duty in the world, at once our pride and our boast, that old home becomes one of the greenest spots in memory's wide waste, around which reminiscences of the most endearing character will ever continue to cluster. Book An Introductory Lecture to a Course on Surgery in the Indiana Medical College

Download or read book An Introductory Lecture to a Course on Surgery in the Indiana Medical College written by Azariah Booth Shipman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture to a Course on Surgery, in the Indiana Medical College: Session 1847-8 Nor is the study of earth alone, or the things upon it, to limi your knowledge. Astronomy should claim a portion of your time, not only from its ennobling and elevating tendencies upon your minds; but the action of the celestial bodies, from time immerno rial, have been supposed to exert an influence in the production of epidemical diseases. Comets were once looked on as harbin gers of war and pestilence, and Meteors were set down as maga zines fraught with disease and death. Natural History is one of the most pleasing, as Well as important, studies, and one that should never be neglected by the Student of Medicine. Man, the head of the Animal Creation, should claim that share of attention, which his position demands. He should be studied, not alone as he'exists at the present time, but as he lived in ages long since past. Book On Recent Improvements in Surgery

Download or read book On Recent Improvements in Surgery written by Thomas D. Mutter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Recent Improvements in Surgery: An Introductory Lecture to the Course on the Principles and Practice of Surgery, in Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia; Delivered November 3, 1842 Jobert's plan consists in the application of a ligature to all the principal arteries supplying the tumour, and the divi sion of its nervous filaments. According to him, by this process he has succeeded in curing four cases of cancer Of the lip, and one of the tongue. For myself, I can say no thing about the merits Of the practice from any personal experience, but entertaining the views which I do on the subject of cancer, I must say that where any operation is proper, a circumstance very rare indeed, complete excision Of the tumour is much to be preferred to any other mode of treatment. Lisfranc, in cases of superficial cancer, proposes to cure it by merely removing the diseased tissue either with the ligature or knife, leaving the organ upon which it happens to be located untouched. When the disease penetrates, or deeply involves an organ, he recommends excision Of the tumor, along with a certain portion of sound tissue.
