Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Vegetable Physiology With this view I have endeavoured to present the plant as a living organism, endowed with particular properties and powers, realising certain needs, and meet ing definite dangers. I have attempted to show it to be properly equipped to encounter such adverse conditions, and to avail itself of all the advantages presented to it by its environment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany, and Vegetable Physiology: Being a Fifth and Revised Edition of the Botanical Text-Book, Illustrated With Over Thirteen Hundred Woodcuts I. Botany is the Natural History of the Vegetable Kingdom. The vegetable kingdom consists of those beings (called plants) which derive their sustenance from the mineral kingdom, that is from the earth and air, and create the food upon which animals live. The proof of this proposition will be hereafter afforded, in the chapter upon the food and nutrition of plants. The vegetable kingdom, therefore, occupies a position between the mineral and the animal kingdoms. Comprehensively considered, Botany ac cordingly embraces every scientific inquiry that can be made respecting plants, their nature, their kinds, the laws which gov ern them, and the part they play in the general economy of the world, - their relations both to the lifeless mineral kingdom below them, from which they draw their sustenance, and to the animal kingdom above, endowed with higher Vitality, to which in turn they render what they have thus derived. Excerpt: ...lead to the replacement of parts which have a brief existence, and need to be renewed. This is the case, for instance, in forest trees that have attained their full dimensions. Growth in the vegetable organism is very definitely localised. Growth in length takes place at or near the apices of stems and roots; it has a definite though vari: able localisation in leaves of different kinds. Growth in thickness is confined to sheaths or bands of cells in different regions of the axis, such as the cambium, and the different phellogens met with in the cortex. Growth and nutrition differ in another respect: the former is intermittent, the latter needs to be constant, though the intensity of the requirements may vary. These considerations show us that there must exist in the plant a very complete mechanism by which the different food-stuffs can be circulated about its body. Each protoplast must be in receipt of a continuous, though perhaps small, supply of nutritive material; the demands of growth must be satisfied by the transport of considerable quantities of formative material to the growing regions. The intermittence of growth makes a further demand. Consider one among many places at which a large consumption of such formative material is proceeding: a stream is travelling there to supply the need. Suppose that some temporary check to the growth at that spot takes place. The stream will lie diverted elsewhere by the demands of the other growing parts, and when the hindrance is removed and growth should again proceed, there will be no stream of constructive material, and much time will be lost before it can be restored. To prevent this there should be a storage of food close to the seat of its consumption, so that, with the awakening need, the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetable Physiology Systematic Botany Systematic Botany, the author would remark, that the reasons which have induced him to prefer the Natural System to the Linnaan, - the latter having been hitherto almost universally employed in elementary treatises on Botany - will be found fully stated in Chapter XIII. He has not aimed to give an account of every order, since this would have been of very little use to the beginner. In making a selection, he has regarded those as having the best claim to notice, which contain plants of the greatest importance to man, or which present some re markable peculiarities of structure or habit; a few have been introduced, however, which possess neither of these distinctions, either as containing well-known British plants, or on account of their great abundance in parti cular spots of the globe. The Cryptogamia have not been treated of in this. Division of the work, since a general view of their chief groups is contained in Chapter II. Book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Nicolai A. Maximov and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology The main Objective in preparing this volume has been to present, in a brief and compact form, to the students of our universities and agricultural colleges and to our future technical agriculturists clear and exact information concerning the life and vital functions of green plants. Such information should help them to understand the Significance of various methods that are being applied in agricultural practice to increase the yield and improve its quality. The ultimate purpose of the study of plant physiology is to control the growth and development of the plant in order to satisfy the need of mankind for plant materials as well as to provide forage crops for livestock. Such control is possible only on the basis of a fundamental study of the life of the plant as a whole, as well as in its separate constituent processes. Analysis of all the vital processes occurring in the plant is, therefore, a very important part of physiology, and experimentation forms the basic method for revealing the laws controlling the vital processes. But analysis should not obscure the synthetic problems of plant physiology or the presentation of the whole life of the plant as a united organism; on the contrary, they should be intimately coordinated. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Plant Physiology: An Introduction To Original Research For Students And Teachers Of Natural Science, Medicine, Agriculture And Forestry In this book I have set before myself the task of advancing to the best of my ability the study of Plant Physiology. The Practical Plant Physiology, however, is by no means exclusively intended for the use of students. I trust that it may be welcome also to many teachers iu higher grade schools. For many reasons Botany forms a particularly suitable subject of study for schools, and a series of physiological experiments not only gives a very special interest to the teaching of Botany, but also enhances its importance as a means of mental development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Botany Two hundred and ninety years have now elapsed since one of the earliest introductions to Botany upon record was published, in four pages folio, by Leonhart Fuchs, a learned physician of Tubingen. At that period Botany was nothing more than the art of' distinguishing one plant from another, and of' remembering the medical. Qualities, sometimes real, but more frequently imaginary, which experience, or error, or superstition, had ascribed to them. Little was known of Vegetable Physiology, nothing of Vege table Anatomy, and even the art of arranging species' systematically had still to be discovered; While scarcely a trace existed of those modern views which have raised the science from the mere business of the herb-gatherer to a station among the most intel lectual branches of natural philosophy. Book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Oran Raber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world. Book Elementary Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Daniel Trembly Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Plant Physiology A translation of Oel's "Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche," by the author of this volume, was published in 1894, and the entire edition was exhausted within a few months after its appearance. A similar elementary text, "Experimental Plant Physiology," was prepared at once and published in 1895, the last copy of which was sold in October, 1901. Meanwhile the "Practical d104-book of Plant Physiology," presenting a brief outline of the entire subject, with details of experimental methods suitable for the exact analyses requisite in research work, has been brought, out. The present little volume has been arranged to replace the "Experimental Plant Physiology" (1895) and to meet the constantly increasing demand for a course in elementary demonstrations which may be followed by beginners in the subject of botany. Experimentation is purposely confined to the principles capable of demonstration by the simplest methods, and without the costly and complex apparatus of a fully equipped laboratory. Furthermore, an arrangement of the book into a number of courses has been made to meet the exigencies of instruction in schools of various types. I am indebted to Dr. C. C. Curtis, of Columbia University, and to Dr. H. M. Richards, of Barnard College, for many valuable suggestions and for their kindness in reading proofs.
