Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Studies: Selections From the Writings of John Ruskin The general impression about volumes of selections is, perhaps, correct, namely; - that their object is, that by one individuals careful research many individuals may be enabled to obtain a superficial knowledge of an author's writings. This volume of "Nature Studies" has been compiled with no such intention. On the contrary, its object is simply to serve as a guide to the rich harvests about "the universe of visible things which have no faculty of speech," but which are ripe for gleaning in John Ruskin's complete works. Hence the compiler's choice of extracts has been made to suggest the wealth of truth and beauty to be found, and to awaken a thirst for fuller knowledge of these treasures rather than to satisfy that thirst. In the foregoing list was not numbered by Ruskin as a volume in Bibliotheca Pastoram; it was too short for such. Vol. III. In the series was to have been a further selection from Sidney's Psalter. This, however, Ruskin did not publish. He had, however, prepared a portion of it for the press, and this additional matter, now for the first time printed, is here included in Rock Honeycomb. Finally, in an Appendix, given in this volume for a reason presently explained (pp. Xxxiv., is some matter which will throw a new light for most people on Ruskin's many-sided interests - namely, examples of his setting of songs to music. The world is filled with gifts good and perfect, but the richest products of any age are con science, love, and ideals. The world very justly appreciates a Newton, whose mind stepped from star to star and from system to system, and a Bacon, whose great genius could untwist the unseen elements of the world-house; but John Ruskin, ethical teacher, prophet, and seer, inspires great strength, by which the higher goodness is made attainable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius of John Ruskin: Selections From His Writings His works are as burdened with contradiction as experi ence itself. Perhaps that is what Shaw meant when he said that few men have embodied our manifold nature more markedly than Ruskin. Endowed with a great mind yet re taining the emotions of a child, noble and narrow, dog matic and yielding, immoderate both in delight and despair, arrogant and gentle, self-obsessed and self-sacrificing, com pulsively communicative yet solitary, prophetic and blind, Ruskin was always changing and always himself. Even his contradictions have a certain consistency. At different stages of life he reacted differently to the same things; yet each re sponse was absolute in its integrity, reflecting a unity of sensibility rather than of system. Throughout his career his mind was capable of change, and hence of growth; but the change, as he once remarked, was that of a tree, not of' a cloud. Book The Complete Works of John Ruskin Vol 39 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Complete Works of John Ruskin Vol 39 Classic Reprint written by John Ruskin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of John Ruskin, Vol. 39 With such material in han d, the first question which the editors had to decide concerned the form in which Index references were to be given. They would have been saved a great deal of trouble if the old references (to chapters and numbered sections) had been retained, but this plan would have been inconvenient in the present edition, which contains so much new matter. The plan of giving a double system of references (so that the Index might in a measure have been available for the previous editions of Ruskin) was upon reflection rejected. Considerations of space were decisive against it. Moreover, this Library Edition is intended to be, and is likely always to be, the Reference Ruskin, and as such may be expected to find a place in most per manent libraries, private and public, in this and other countries. The preliminary preparation of index-slips for the hitherto unprinted matter, as well as for the notes and introductions, was the work of Miss Slaughter. Much re-arrangement has, of course, been necessary, and it has often been convenient to combine several references under a new heading. The index, as finally presented, is the work of the two editors; Mr. Wedderburn having done the letter a (except Art and Artists), the Bible, and the letters d, h, i, j, k, n, 0, q, u, o, to (with some exceptions), a', y and z, and Mr. Cook, the rest; and the whole work having then been subjected to a joint revision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoughts of John Ruskin No apology need be offered by the editor for presenting to the public another volume of selec tions from the Works of John Ruskin. Those heretofore compiled have been generally addressed to the admirers of certain special forms of literary work. The Noble Thoughts have been selected at random throughout the whole works, wherever any concisely expressed idea of an elevated and practical character has hit the fancy of the editor. In the strenuous times in which we live, such compilations often become the companions of those who would not otherwise avail themselves of the gems of thought scattered through the vol umes, and in some cases, may serve as an intro duction to, and cause the reading of many of the works from which they are culled.
