Book An Introduction to the Study of Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Hiram Corson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Shakespeare Already in 1598, when Shakespeare was but 34 years of age, a clergyman, Francis Meres, educated at the University of Cam bridge, in a work entitled Palladis Tamia, ranked Shakespeare with the greatest poets and dramatists of Greece and Rome. He would hardly have done this if Shakespeare was so obscure and so little estimated at the time as to cause such a judgment as he expresses, to be laughed at. Meres, as his book shows, was a man of great scholastic learning; and scholastic learning in those days meant a reverential estimate Of the great classics of Greece and Rome. Download or read book An Introduction to Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Henry Noble Maccracken and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Shakespeare The advances made in Shakespearean scholarship within the last half-dozen years seem to justify the writing of another manual for school and college use. The studies of Wallace in the life-records, of Lounsbury in the history of editions, of Pollard and Greg in early quartos, of Lee upon the First Folio, of Albright and others upon the Elizabethan Theater, as well as valuable monographs on individual plays have all appeared since the last Shakespeare manual was prepared. This little volume aims to present what may be necessary for the majority of classes, as a background upon which may be begun the study and reading of the plays. Critical comment on individual plays has been added, in the hope that it may stimulate interest in other plays than those assigned for study. Chapters I, VIII, IX, X, and XIII are the work of Professor MacCracken; chapters V, VI, VII, XII, and XIV are by Professor Pierce; and chapters II, III, IV, and XI are by Dr. Durham. The authors have, however, united in the criticism and the revision of every chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Hamlet

Download or read book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Hamlet written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Classes Such being the case, or at least my view of the case, I am not without apprehension, that some excess may be justly charged upon what is here done. Self-restrained and spar ing as I have meant to be, still there is a considerable addi tion to the number of notes given in my former edition. But, in the matter of annotation, it is not easy to strike just the right medium between too much and too little. Here, again, I have been mainly guided by the results of my own experience in teaching; aiming to give such and so many notes as I have found needful or conducive to a fair under standing of the Poet's thought. In the present stage of Shakespearian study, I suppose it would hardly do, even in a book designed for school use, to leave the matter of textual comment and textual correction altogether untouched. Accordingly there will be found, at the end of the play, a body of critical notes, wherein I have drawn together whatever seemed necessary or desirable to be said in the way of textual criticism, and of comment on such particulars of textual correction as are here admitted. In doing this, I have almost unavoidably been led to note a few instances of different readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark

Download or read book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: Edited With Notes, an Introduction and Outline Questions The play of Hamlet, in its accepted form, was first published in 1604. Shakespeare was then forty years old, and had lived in London, it is supposed, since 1586. During these eighteen years he seems to have been absorbed in the practical demands of theatrical life, and to have been essentially denied the literary means of enlarging his preparation for the playwright's work. That he was able thus to produce in Hamlet one of the most remarkable examples of secular litera ture in the world sufficiently proves the genius of the man. Other plays of Shakespeare are more finished, or evince a nobler art; but none has aroused such interest, or become the subject of so much study, and comment, and discussion.
