Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Poetry The contents of this volume originally formed part of a course of lectures which were given some four years ago in connection with the Cambridge University Extension, and afterwards before an English audience at Dresden. The interest which the subject elicited on these occasions has made me venture to hope that a few readers may be found, no less sympathetic and indulgent than my former hearers. I have left almost everything as it was written, instead of attempting to recast the whole into what might be thought a form more suitable for publication, although I am aware that much which in a lecture may be allowable, and even attractive, is apt to appear crude, superficial, and incoherent in a book. I trust that the didactic and familiar tone, which one naturally assumes as a lecturer, will not be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry We may presume that by his first epithet Milton intended that simplicity which is another name for sincerity. 'He meant that a poet must look at the world frankly and with open eyes; with the spirit, though with more than the wisdom, of a child.) We sometimes express another side of the same truth by saying that poetry is "universal," meaning that it cares nothing for superficial and transient fashions, but is interested only "in man, in nature, and in human life," in their permanent elements. This first epithet seems to fix beyond dispute an indispensable quality of all poetry. If a writer is insincere, or if he is conventional and fashionable, we are sure, whatever his airs and graces, that he is no poet. By "sensuous" it is probable that Milton meant what, in more technical language, we should describe as "concrete." This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Literature I must therefore ask the reader to remember that this book is planned as a guide and companion to his own study, and that, while I hope it may be interesting and suggestive in itself, the value of the things said in it must ultimately be sought in their application. It will be found that little place is given to questions of abstract aesthetics. These, as well as all details of a purely scholastic character, have been purposely avoided, as my desire throughout has been to make my volume literature is primarily a means of enjoyment and a help to life. I have to thank my friend, the Rev. Albert E. Sims, for the invaluable assistance which, as on various former occasions, he has again rendered me in my proof-reading and in the settlement of the many troublesome little points which are certain to arise when a book of this kind is passing through the press. Book Study of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Study of Poetry Classic Reprint written by A. C. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Poetry In old days, as we all know, from the childhood of the race, poetry was regarded as a form of inspiration. One word stands in Latin for poet and prophet, just as 'hard' in English carries both meanings; Herodotus tells us that Homer and Hesiod made the theogony of the Greeks; the Book of Job and the Prophecies of Isaiah are poems. Expressions which arose naturally from this view are still familiar to us. We still hear of the Muses; writers are even found to invoke them; and up to this very day the poet is supposed to be visited by an 'inspiration, ' or affected by a 'divine afflatus.' The words have become little better than cant; for they no longer represent a genuine belief. But sometimes we may hope that the disappearance of the belief has not really touched that feeling of reverence from which the belief arose and which gave it its value. Book An Introduction to the Study of Robert Browning s Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Robert Browning s Poetry Classic Reprint written by Hiram Corson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Robert Browning's Poetry The study of poetry, in our institutions of learning, so far as I have taken note of it, and the education induced thereby, are almost purely intellectual. The student's spiritual nature is left to take care of itself and the consequence is that he becomes, at best, only a thinking and analyzing machine. The spiritual claims of the study of poetry are especially demanded in the case of Browning's poetry. Browning is gen erally and truly regarded as the most intellectual of poets. No poetry in English literature, or in any literature, is more charged with discursive thought than his. But he is, at the same time, the most spiritual and transcendental of poets, the subtlest assertor of the Soul in Song. His thought is never an end to itself, but is always subservient to an ulterior spiritual end always directed towards a presentment of the correspond ency of the universe to Deity, of the natural to the spirit ual, and of the actual to the ideal and it is all-important that students should be awakened, and made, as far as possi ble, responsive to this spiritual end. The sections of the Introduction on Personality and Art were read before the Browning Society of London, in June, 1882. I have seen no reason for changing or modifying, in any respect, the views therein expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. However, though not an end in itself, as an aid to the appreciation of poetic expression, verse-making possesses Ono little value and should hold its time-honored place in the study of poetry. As some help to this, a chapter of practical detail on poetic diction with abundant illustration has been added by way of appendix. For this reason Spelling has been modernized and Americanized except in a few cases where old Spelling or dialect forms are required for the full experience of the poem. Book An Introduction to Poetry

Download or read book An Introduction to Poetry written by Raymond Macdonald Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Versification If is now about thirty years since I prepared an American edition of a little book by the younger Tom Hood, which purported to set forth the rules of rime (the Rhymester, Appleton Co., and it is just twenty years since I first gave a course in metrical rhetoric to a class of undergraduates in Columbia College. And I have long felt the need of a simple text-book for the beginner, which would serve as an introduction to the study of English versi fication. There are many volumes devoted to the analysis of poetry, but there are few which confine themselves wholly to the problems of prosody; and scarcely any one of these is exactly adapted to the needs of the novice who knows little or nothing about the principles of the metrical art. The subject is treated casually and cursorily in many grammars and in many rhetorics; but the main purpose of these books is to help the student to express himself accu rately and satisfactorily in prose.
