Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Comparative Religion The Hartford-Lamson Lectures on "The Religions of the World" are delivered at Hartford Theological Seminary in connection with the Lamson Fund, which was established by a group of friends in honor of the late Charles M. Lamson, D.D., sometime President of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, to assist in preparing students for the foreign missionary field. The Lectures are designed primarily to give to such students a good knowledge of the religious history, beliefs, and customs of the peoples among whom they expect to labor. As they are delivered by scholars of the first rank, who are authorities in their respective fields, it is expected that in published form they will prove to be of value to students generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Comparative Religion It may not be amiss to remark that this book has been perforce written under great disadvantage, on account Of the impossibility of access to many valuable sources Of illustra tion such as abound in libraries in Great Britain and America; for in such a small and out-of-the-way station as has been Of late the author's home in India, such helps are prao tically not obtainable. I will only venture to hope that for this lack some slight compensa tion may be found in the writer's many years Of residence and familiarity with the life and language Of the people, in such a great non Christian land as India. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Religion: Its Adjuncts and Allies These successive publications, though representing in themselves valuable and substantial results, were how ever only so many steps leading towards a goal which had been kept in view from the very outtet. At the same time, the experience gained in the preparation of these books steadily deepened a conviction that had very early asserted itself, viz. That Comparative Religion would never come to its own until its right to be pursued as a separate and self-governing discipline came to be generally conceded. Hitherto, this line of research has been regarded and expounded as a mere'adjunct of Theology, Philowphy, History, or some other depart ment of study; in future, it must be accorded a recognition commensurate with the rank to which it is demonstrably entitled. A plea to this general effect was advanced, and briefly supported, in a paper read by the author at the Third International Congress for the History of Religions, -held in Oxford seven years ago.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Method and Scope: A Paper Read (in Part) At the Third International Congress of the History of Religions, Oxford, September 17, 1908 I. The Methods and Scope of the Science of Religion - It is desirable that, for a moment, we should make a retrospective glance. Let us recall, as a preliminary step, the methods and scope of the Science Of Religion. It is essential that one or two of the con siderations which such a survey suggests should be clearly borne in mind. By 'the Science of Religion' we mean that increasing group Of studies, diverse yet closely interrelated, by which man is seeking to unravel the mystery of his religious acts and aspirations. In particular, the Science Of Religion is the product of the deliberate investigation of the facts Of religion - and Of all the facts, whatever their relative age, number, or consequence - when these data are dealt with in accordance with some clearly defined scientific method. These methods have varied very greatly, and naturally they have been applied with varying degrees Of proficiency. Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Comparative Religion written by Frank Byron Jevons and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of any science lies in its application to practical purposes. For Christianity, the use of the science of religion consists in applying it to show that Christianity is the highest manifestation of the religious spirit. To make this use of the science of religion, we must fully and frankly accept the facts it furnishes, and must recognise that others are at liberty to use them for any opposite purpose. But we must also insist that the science of religion is limited to the establishment of facts and is excluded from passing judgment on the religious value of those facts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Studies in Religion: An Introduction to Unitarianism Young people should also know their own church and faith well: this is described in the last part. For this some history of the Unitarian Church is given, in order that one may get his bearings and appreciate the sources and the cost. Some plain and positive statements of belief are given; and then there are a few chapters devoted to the working forces of the church. It is hoped that in this way the young people will be prepared for appreciative understanding and for efficient work in their church. In the Teachers' Edition suggestions are made for methods of teaching and for more extensive study by means of the larger works. Book Introduction to the Science of Religion

Download or read book Introduction to the Science of Religion written by F. Max Müller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Religion: Four Lectures Delivered at the Royal Institution, in February and May, 1870 These Lectures, intended as an introduction to a comparative study of the principal religions of the world, were delivered at the Royal Institution in London, in February and March 1870, and printed in Fraser's Magazine of February, March, April, and May of the same year. I declined at that time to publish them in a separate form, hoping that I might find leisure to work up more fully the materials which I had collected for many years. I thought that I should thus be enabled to make these lectures more instructive and more complete, and at the same time meet several objections that had been raised by some critics against the very possibility of a scientific study of religions, and against the views which I ventured to put forward on the origin, the growth, and the real value of the ancient systems of faith, elaborated by different branches of the human race. A small edition only of these lectures was printed privately, and sent to some of my friends, whose remarks have proved in many cases most valuable and instructive. If now I have decided on republishing these Lec tures, I have done so because I fear that as during the three years that have elapsed since their delivery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Text Book in Comparative Religion First of all, in the Old Testament, we have the beginning of human worship, the origin of religion. We have the worship of Jehovah standing out for ages supreme and alone. Then we have the advent of other religions, departures from the original worship, not approaches to it, but departures, separations, substitutions, and usurpations. We have the worship of the Host of Heaven, Bel worship or Baal worship, Moloch worship, Dagon worship, with the, beginnings of nature worship, of hero worship, of ancestor worship, and of other kinds in addition. In connection with the abundant Old Testament disclosures on Comparative Religion we have in Romans I, in the New Testament, a divine sum mary of the whole world's experience and of God's irreversible judgment in the entire case.
