Book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Brander Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel oped. An attempt has been made to show how each of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career of each of the greater writers and on their practice of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single Chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion of the condition of our literature at the beginning Of the twentieth century. NO living author is named in the text. To arouse the student's interest in the authors as actual men, the illustrations chosen have been confined to por traits and views, and to facsimiles of manuscripts. To enable him to see for himself the successive stages of the growth of American literature, and to let him dis cover how the authors sometimes came one after an other and sometimes worked side by side, there has been appended also a chronological table of the chief dates in our literary history. As mere text-book instruction can never be an adequate substitute for the student's own acquaintance with the actual works of the authors discussed, there have been annexed to every chapter bibliographical notes calling attention to the editions most suitable for the student's reading, and also to the best biographies and to a few of the most suggestive criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to American Literature The plan and purpose of this book can be stated in a few words. It is intended as a companion-book to my Introduction to English Literature, and it has been prepared - so far as the nature of the subject permitted - according to the same general scheme. The first thing required of a book of this character is that it shall really bring the reader into vital rela tion with the best works in the literature of which it treats, - that it shall induce him to read or re-read them with both delight and understanding. I have tried to do this by treating our greater authors at comparative length; by making their personality as real and living as I could; by adding some critical discussion of. Their chief works; and by furnishing study lists containing suggestions for reading and bibliographical references. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of American Literature In its beginnings American literature differs from the literatures of most other great nations; it was a transplanted thing. It sprang in a way like Minerva, full-armed from the head of Jove,—Jove in this case being England, and the armor being the heritage which the average American colonist had secured in England before he crossed the Atlantic. In contrast, Greek, Roman, French, German, English, and the other less familiar literatures can all be more or less successfully traced back to primitive conditions. Their early life was interwoven with the growth of the language and the progress of a rude civilization, and their earliest products which have come down to us were not results of authorship as we know it to-day. They were either folk poetry, composed perhaps and certainly enjoyed by the people in groups and accompanied by group singing and dancing,—like the psalms and the simpler ballads,—or they were the record of folk tradition, slowly and variously developed through generations and finally collected into a continuous story like the Iliad, the Æneid, the “Song of Roland,” the “Nibelungenlied,” and “Beowulf.” They were composed by word of mouth and not reduced to writing for years or generations, and they were not put into print until centuries after they were current in speech or transcribed by monks and scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of American Literature In this volume the attempt has been made to distinguish the salient epochs in our literature, brief though the story is. The relation of the artist and his work to the general life of his time and of his people has been frequently recalled. This relation is especially illustrated in the chronological tables, which may be supplemented from the regular textbooks in American history. Nevertheless, the treatment in our text itself is in the main biographical. That is, the effort has almost always been to make the single life appear an articulated and rational whole. This method craves far more space than was here available; but, as Miss Scudder remarks of her similar undertaking for English literature, any such volume as ours must serve merely as an introduction to far wider reading. The writer believes that biographical treatment is the most intelligible to the young reader. It also seems to him the most truthful. That the artist, more than other men, can escape largely from local or temporal limitations, and find his spiritual kin, seems undeniable; yet from his truest self he cannot escape. Even when the artistic activity seems most detached from the man, as in Hawthorne, or even in Poe, the work will be better understood by a sympathetic study of the life, the whole life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature Since 1870 It has been our object to determine this new period and to study its distinguishing characteristics. We have divided the literary history of the century into three periods, denominating them as the Knickerbocker Period, the New England Period, and the National Period, and we have made the last to begin shortly after the close of the Civil War with those new forces and new ideals and broadened views that grew out of that mighty struggle. Book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by William P. Trent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of American Literature The aim of the book is to be simple, orderly, and clear; to tell a few facts in such a way that there need be no confusion in the mind of the reader. While it is hoped that the subject-matter of the book has intrinsic value, a knowledge of literature obviously comes only from study of the literature itself; therefore, primarily the book will have its greatest usefulness when taken as a guide. With this thought in view, suggestions for reading, intended mainly for students in secondary schools, are given at the ends of the chapters. More mature minds will naturally read the books mentioned in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Short History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Walter Cochrane Bronson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent Of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chiefly descriptive; elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Download or read book History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Reuben Post Halleck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Literature The wide use of the author's History of English Literature the favor with which it has been received in all parts of the United States, and the number of earnest requests for a History of American Literature on the same plan, have led to the writing of this book. It has not appeared sooner because the author has followed his rule of making a careful first-hand study, not only of all the matter discussed, but also of a far greater amount, which, although it must be omitted from a condensed textbook, is, nevertheless, necessary as a background for judgment and selection. The following chapters describe the greatest achievements in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, "The half is greater than the whole," and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. The author has further aimed to make this work both interesting and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Early American Literature

Download or read book Early American Literature written by Anna Lorraine Guthrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early American Literature: A Study Outline In this outline the points given for each paper are suggestions which embody the salient facts about the author. They may be treated as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. The Readings are also suggestions for which other selections may be substituted. The Recommended Reading represents the general consensus of opinion of critics and writers as to the best work of the various authors. Quotations have been freely given in the hope that they may help to a better and more sympathetic understanding of the author, and with the intent that each one may study and decide independently whether as estimates they are just and true. Sometimes special references are given under individual topics. It has not been the intention to make these take the place of the general references which it is well to study in every case. They have been given simply as a help to material bearing on a particular phase of the subject. The bibliography has been limited to a few books and to the best articles in periodicals most easily procurable. If it is thought that too many histories of American literature are cited the critical comments in the Bibliography will serve as an aid in selecting those most helpful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Literature: A Study Outline It has been deemed best to confine the work in this outline to a few authors, rather than to attempt to cover the whole field by giving a place to each one of the innumerable authors whose work falls within the limits of contemporary American literature. Pattee's "History of American literature since 1870" has been chosen as the main basis of the outline. Some authors not dealt with in Pattee have been included, preference having been given to those most commonly referred to in books and periodicals. Authors whose literary activity has had its beginning since 1900 have not been mentioned. In this outline the suggested points for each paper embody the leading facts about the author. They may be regarded as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person.
