This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Science and Practice of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Inorganic The principal aim of this volume is to guide the student towards the attainment of systematic work in his qualitative analysis - to help him to learn a sound method rather than to fill his mind with innumerable isolated reactions. For teaching the method of work, it is not only unnecessary but undesirable to attempt to include either all classes of compounds, or all the reactions of those that are considered. The selection made is that which long experience has shown to be the best for the purpose, and at the same time it includes all the more commonly occurring inorganic substances. The reactions described are not only those utilised in the tabulated method given, but sufficient for the more advanced student to avail himself of in devising other methods in specific cases that can be advantageously treated in a special or different manner. A perfect system is an elastic one that may be adapted to various circumstances, and the student is encouraged to consider the tables given as guides rather than rigid rules, when he has had a little experience and can judge for himself. There is a great deal more given in the book than it would be desirable for a student to actually confirm for himself while going over the reactions for the first time. Those parts that he should experimentally verify as far as he can before beginning any separations are indicated by asterisks, which signify that he should confirm for himself the statements in the paragraph so marked until he comes to the asterisk. Book The Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis

Download or read book The Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis written by C. W. Eliot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compendious Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis The authors have endeavored to include in this short treatise enough of the theory and practice of qualitative analysis "in the wet way," to bring out all the reasoning involved in the subject, and to give the student a firm hold upon the general principles and methods of the art. It has been their aim to give only so much of mechanical detail as is essential to an exact comprehension of the methods and to success in the actual experiments. Hence, the multiplication of different tests or processes, having essentially the same object, has been purposely avoided. For the same reason none of the rare elements are alluded to. The manual is intended to meet the wants of the general student, to whom the study is chiefly valuable as a means of mental discipline and as a compact example of the scientific method of arriving at truth. To professional students who wish to make themselves expert analysts, this little book offers a logical introduction to the subject, an outline which is trustworthy as far as it goes, but which needs to be filled in and enlarged by the subsequent use of some more elaborate treatise as a book of reference. Professor Johnson, of Yale, has supplied this need with his excellent edition of Fresenius's comprehensive manual. The authors believe that they have put into the following pages as much of inorganic qualitative analysis as is useful for training, and also as much as the engineer, physician, agriculturist or liberally educated man needs to know. The book has been written for the use of classes in the Institute of Technology, who have already studied the authors' "Manual of Inorganic Chemistry." It is simply an implement devised to facilitate the giving of thorough instruction to large classes in the laboratory. It is the authors' practice to examine their classes orally every four or five exercises, in order to secure close attention to the reasoning of the subject. Book An Introduction to the Study of Qualitative Chemical Analysis

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Qualitative Chemical Analysis written by J. T. McGill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Qualitative Chemical Analysis This little book is intended to be used only with the assistance of a teacher and as an introduction to some full work on qualitative analysis, such as that of Fresenius or Prescott. Part I. contains such experiments as are found in late elementary works on inorganic chemistry. These experiments are designed to train the student in the construction and handling of chemical apparatus, and to teach him how to observe scientifically, reason upon his observations, and draw correct conclusions from them. They are selected for the most part with special reference to the analytical work that follows in Part II., and include the preparation of many of the reagents used in qualitative analysis and the examination of their properties. Part I. may be omitted by students who have taken a course in elementary chemistry, including experiments in the laboratory, such as Eliot and Storer's, Remsen's, or Williams's. Part II. contains the special feature of this hook-t. e., the application to qualitative analysis of that method of teaching which, instead of imparting directly to the student the facts or laws which are the object of the study, leads him by questions and suggestions to work them out for himself. The use of this method for two years in Vanderbilt University has led me to conclude that it prevents to a great extent the blind following of directions, which the student is so liable to fall into in qualitative analysis, and that it also imparts greater interest to this study by requiring the student to test by practical examples the correctness of the conclusions which he has arrived at as the result of his own investigations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Chemistry plays a key role in understanding chemistry. Qualitative analytical chemistry studies not only the identification of the elements or ions, but also the identification of the substances found in a mixture. This book offers an effective means for presenting descriptive qualitative analytical chemistry. It also provides important notions of qualitative chemistry related to analytical reactions and reagents, analytical properties of ions, and solutions. Special attention is given to chemical equilibrium: ionic, proton-transfer, redox, precipitation and complexation equilibria. This paper is a must-read for students, chemistry teachers, quality assurance officers in pharmaceutical industry, but can be a reliable scientific support for any pharmacist or chemist, studying for a degree or involved in research. In a clear, attractive and accessible approach, the book explains general concepts of analytical chemistry at a level of basic understanding.

Download or read book An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Delos Fall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Qualitative Chemical Analysis This manual is designed to impart but little chemical truth directly. It aims rather to lead the student to gain that truth himself as nearly as possible at first hand and as a product of his own thinking. This he is enabled to do, without waste of time, guided as he is by the suggestions of the book and the constant prevision of the live teacher. The student is first thoroughly grounded in the fundamental ideas of chemistry before he goes on to use those ideas as tools in the practical work of qualitative analysis. If he gains a proper conception of the relation of the atom to the molecule, of valence; if he masters the principles of nomenclature and the chemical equation as set forth in chapters ii. and iii., he will certainly acquire his chemistry with facility and clearness. That it produces strong, accurate, enthusiastic, and independent students the author has demonstrated in his own classes through several years. For the sake of emphasizing what is expressed elsewhere, the author would insist upon regular recitations, at stated times, upon the laboratory work, in which there shall be full and searching discussion of the results obtained, of errors committed, how these errors have arisen and how controlled. Comparison of results obtained and informal discussion of the difficulties to be met with beget an interest and enthusiasm for the work which is invaluable. Moreover, a few experiments fully reported and discussed are of much greater value than many experiments with little time given to such discussion.
