Book Keys to the Insects of the European Part of the USSR

Download or read book Keys to the Insects of the European Part of the USSR written by G S Medvedev and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part VI of Keys to the Insects of the European Part of the USSR covers the suborder Symphyta of the phytophagous Hymenoptera (sawflies and woodwasps), small superfamilies Trigonaloidea, Stephanoidea, Evanioidea of parasitic Apocrita, and the family Paxilommatidae of the superfamily Ichneumonoidea. Identification keys are provided for 18 families, 123 genera and over 900 species which include a large number of economically important species -- the pests of agricultural crops and timber as well as entomophages. A brief outline of morphology and biology, synonymy and geographic distribution is given for each family and genus and the known host-plants are indicated for every species. Three species have been described for the first time and 12 new subgenera have been separated. Bibliography -- 88 citations; 217 illustrations.

Book Genesis of the Hymenoptera and the phases of their evolution

Download or read book Genesis of the Hymenoptera and the phases of their evolution written by Sergei Ivanovich Malyshev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Professor S. I. Malyshev, who died from a cerebral haemorrhage on 9 May 1967 at the age of 83 in the train while travelling to field work, was one of the foremost European students of the Hymenoptera, in particular of the habits of solitary bees, a subject on which he had published many papers since 1908, mostly in Russian. In 1935 he published an important paper on part of his work, and I helped to edit the publication, which was in English. A few years ago some of my friends in California asked me if I could not persuade him to complete his early paper on solitary bees, offering if necessary to arrange for a translation. When I wrote to Professor Malyshev making this suggestion he no longer had the health to produce a new work, but he sent me a copy of his recent book on the evolution of the Hymenoptera which he thought might be worth trans lating. Sir Boris Uvarov was good enough to translate for me the chapter and section headings, and it seemed to both of us that a lot of new ground was covered in a highly original way. The explanation of the changes in behaviour that must have taken place when the simple, plant-feeding saw flies developed into highly specialized parasites or into industrious, food collecting, social insects such as the ants, bees, and wasps can well be regarded as one of the major challenges to zoologists.

Download or read book Insect Defenses written by David L. Evans and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work takes a fresh, modern approach to investigate and explain the predator and prey relationships of insects and spiders, the major terrestrial fauna on earth. Devoted to broad and in-depth analysis of arthropod defenses against predators, the book's approach is both experimentally and theoretically based with major emphasis on evolution, predator strategies and tactics, and prey defensive adaptations and behaviors. The authors explain such topics as cryptic and aposematic coloration, the conflict between sexual and survival needs, web spider prey choice and evolution of prey counter defenses, predator-prey interactions and the origins of intelligence, bird predatory tactics, and caterpillar defense strategies. Also examined is the use of timing for fitness and survival, evolutionary gamesmanship in the predatory bat-moth relationship, colony defense by aper wasps, startle as a defense by moths, aggregation as a defense, chemicals as defenses, plant chemicals as defenses, and venoms as defenses. The authors illustrate each topic with numerous specific well-documented examples presented in a clear, readable style.
