Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Connecticut: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time There are but few persons in this country who have not, at some time or other, felt the want of an accurate, well written, concise, yet clear and reliable history of their own or some other state. The want here indicated is now about being sup plied; and, as the task of doing so is no light or superficial one, the publishers have given into the hands of the two gentlemen whose names appear in the title-page, the work of preparing a series of cabi net histories, embracing 3. Volume for each state in the Union. Of their ability to perform this well, we need not speak. They are no strangers in the literary World. What they undertake the public may rest assured will be performed thoroughly; and that no sectarian, sectional, or party feelings will bias their judgment, or lead them to violate the integrity of history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Connecticut To those who may think I have given undue attention to the period of the French wars, I would commend the words of Dr. Bushnell, in his Historical Estimate of Connecticut, where he says, We are accustomed to speak of the wars of the Revolution; but these earlier wars, so little remembered, were far more adventurous, and required stouter endurance. The facts contained in this volume have been gathered from many sources. Besides a large number of town and county narratives, I have constantly consulted the his tories of Trumbull, Hollister, Barber, Atwater, Palfrey, Bancroft and Lodge. I desire, however, in this connec tion, to make special mention of the published volumes of the Colonial Records of the State, which have made available the most valuable and exact sources of historical information. Connecticut has been fortunate in the ser vices rendered by J. Hammond Trumbull, LL.D., and Mr. Charles J. Hoadly, in editing these records. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connecticut as a Colony and as a State, or One of the Original Thirteen, Vol. 1 The above may be thought a rhetorical extravaganza. Those will hardly take that View who recall how the men of Connecticut, under a monarch whose councillors thought democracy the one evil from which all others arise, exchanged a worthless quitclaim based on a non-existent grant for a char ter of utter democracy, with another colony thrown in for good measure; how, having beyond expectation led his mar tinet successor to drop the suit for vacating it, they balked the king's agent from canceling it, and thus, leaving the Whole business hanging in air, waited firmly intrenched till. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Connecticut Our patriotism is likely to begin, if it begins at all, in childhood. It usually springs from the child's natural love for his own home. In any case it cannot be directly taught. The teacher, the writer, and the parent have done all that they can in this way when they have awakened the child's interest in the things that lie nearest about him. I am glad for the children of Connecticut that they have so good a book as this one, by Lewis Sprague Mills, a.m, from which to learn about their State. They will find the book simple, clear, warm-hearted, and full of knowledge about the times, long ago, when Connecticut too was young. Another thing they will discover is that Mr. Mills under stands children and knows how to keep them interested in the story he has to tell. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Popular Biography of Connecticut The inception of this work is indirectly attributable to the annoyance which its author has experienced in his previous daily newspaper work, through the pov erty of biographical information obtainable from public' sources concerning most of the fairly prominent citizens of our State. His recent complete release from journal ism afforded him an opportunity for undertaking to supply in some degree the deficiency referred to; and with that end in view this work was begun. It is due to the reader, and to all who have been successfully or unsuccessfully solicited to appear as subjects of this biography, to know something of the methods which have governed its preparation. During the month of December, 1890, one or two leading citizens of every town and city in Connecticut were interviewed by the writer, and an arrangement was made in conformity with which these gentlemen subsequently submitted a list of names of nearly two thousand persons in all portions of the State, prominent in business or professional life, or who were holding public positions and properly entitled to be included in a popular biography of the Commonwealth. The list thus furnished included State, county, town, and municipal officials, representatives of the judiciary, the clergy, the military, the 'bar, physicians, merchants, manufacturers.
