Book An Invitation to Alexandrov Geometry

Download or read book An Invitation to Alexandrov Geometry written by Stephanie Alexander and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed toward graduate students and research mathematicians, with minimal prerequisites this book provides a fresh take on Alexandrov geometry and explains the importance of CAT(0) geometry in geometric group theory. Beginning with an overview of fundamentals, definitions, and conventions, this book quickly moves forward to discuss the Reshetnyak gluing theorem and applies it to the billiards problems. The Hadamard–Cartan globalization theorem is explored and applied to construct exotic aspherical manifolds.

Book Recent Advances in Alexandrov Geometry

Download or read book Recent Advances in Alexandrov Geometry written by Gerardo Arizmendi Echegaray and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to various aspects of Alexandrov Geometry for those wishing to get a detailed picture of the advances in the field. It contains enhanced versions of the lecture notes of the two mini-courses plus those of one research talk given at CIMAT. Peter Petersen’s part aims at presenting various rigidity results about Alexandrov spaces in a way that facilitates the understanding by a larger audience of geometers of some of the current research in the subject. They contain a brief overview of the fundamental aspects of the theory of Alexandrov spaces with lower curvature bounds, as well as the aforementioned rigidity results with complete proofs. The text from Fernando Galaz-García’s minicourse was completed in collaboration with Jesús Nuñez-Zimbrón. It presents an up-to-date and panoramic view of the topology and geometry of 3-dimensional Alexandrov spaces, including the classification of positively and non-negatively curved spaces and the geometrization theorem. They also present Lie group actions and their topological and equivariant classifications as well as a brief account of results on collapsing Alexandrov spaces. Jesús Nuñez-Zimbrón’s contribution surveys two recent developments in the understanding of the topological and geometric rigidity of singular spaces with curvature bounded below.

  • Pages : 303 pages

Download or read book Alexandrov Geometry written by Stephanie Alexander and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandrov spaces are defined via axioms similar to those of the Euclid axioms but where certain equalities are replaced with inequalities. Depending on the signs of the inequalities, we obtain Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above (CBA) and curvature bounded below (CBB). Even though the definitions of the two classes of spaces are similar, their properties and known applications are quite different. The goal of this book is to give a comprehensive exposition of the structure theory of Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above and below. It includes all the basic material as well as selected topics inspired by considering Alexandrov spaces with CBA and with CBB simultaneously. The book also includes an extensive problem list with solutions indicated for every problem.

Book A Course in Metric Geometry

Download or read book A Course in Metric Geometry written by Dmitri Burago and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Metric geometry” is an approach to geometry based on the notion of length on a topological space. This approach experienced a very fast development in the last few decades and penetrated into many other mathematical disciplines, such as group theory, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations. The objective of this graduate textbook is twofold: to give a detailed exposition of basic notions and techniques used in the theory of length spaces, and, more generally, to offer an elementary introduction into a broad variety of geometrical topics related to the notion of distance, including Riemannian and Carnot-Carathéodory metrics, the hyperbolic plane, distance-volume inequalities, asymptotic geometry (large scale, coarse), Gromov hyperbolic spaces, convergence of metric spaces, and Alexandrov spaces (non-positively and non-negatively curved spaces). The authors tend to work with “easy-to-touch” mathematical objects using “easy-to-visualize” methods. The authors set a challenging goal of making the core parts of the book accessible to first-year graduate students. Most new concepts and methods are introduced and illustrated using simplest cases and avoiding technicalities. The book contains many exercises, which form a vital part of the exposition.

Download or read book A Metric Splitting of Alexandrov Spaces written by Andreas Wörner and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandrov spaces are metric generalizations of Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvature bounds. The boundary of an Alexandrov space M may decompose into several boundary strata. If M has positive curvature, it is quite well understood how the number of boundary strata determines the homeomorphism type of M as a stratified space. This book deals with the case that M has nonnegative curvature. The author Andreas Worner begins with an introduction to Alexandrov geometry, which requires only some familiarity with Riemannian geometry. Then boundary strata are investigated more closely. After all prerequisites are given, a splitting theorem is proved as the main result in this book. More precisely, let M be compact and of dimension n. Assume that M has k+1 boundary strata such that their common intersection is empty, but any intersection of k strata is nonempty. Then M is isometric to a metric product of Alexandrov spaces S and D, where S has dimension n-k and is isometric to each intersection of k boundary strata. It is remarkable that the theorem provides in general non-flat factors.

Book Metric Spaces of Non Positive Curvature

Download or read book Metric Spaces of Non Positive Curvature written by Martin R. Bridson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A description of the global properties of simply-connected spaces that are non-positively curved in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov, and the structure of groups which act on such spaces by isometries. The theory of these objects is developed in a manner accessible to anyone familiar with the rudiments of topology and group theory: non-trivial theorems are proved by concatenating elementary geometric arguments, and many examples are given. Part I provides an introduction to the geometry of geodesic spaces, while Part II develops the basic theory of spaces with upper curvature bounds. More specialized topics, such as complexes of groups, are covered in Part III.

Book The Geometrization Conjecture

Download or read book The Geometrization Conjecture written by John Morgan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a complete proof of the geometrization conjecture, which describes all compact 3-manifolds in terms of geometric pieces, i.e., 3-manifolds with locally homogeneous metrics of finite volume. The method is to understand the limits as time goes to infinity of Ricci flow with surgery. The first half of the book is devoted to showing that these limits divide naturally along incompressible tori into pieces on which the metric is converging smoothly to hyperbolic metrics and pieces that are locally more and more volume collapsed. The second half of the book is devoted to showing that the latter pieces are themselves geometric. This is established by showing that the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of sequences of more and more locally volume collapsed 3-manifolds are Alexandrov spaces of dimension at most 2 and then classifying these Alexandrov spaces. In the course of proving the geometrization conjecture, the authors provide an overview of the main results about Ricci flows with surgery on 3-dimensional manifolds, introducing the reader to this difficult material. The book also includes an elementary introduction to Gromov-Hausdorff limits and to the basics of the theory of Alexandrov spaces. In addition, a complete picture of the local structure of Alexandrov surfaces is developed. All of these important topics are of independent interest. Titles in this series are co-published with the Clay Mathematics Institute (Cambridge, MA).

Book Geometry with an Introduction to Cosmic Topology

Download or read book Geometry with an Introduction to Cosmic Topology written by Michael P. Hitchman and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 2009 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content of Geometry with an Introduction to Cosmic Topology is motivated by questions that have ignited the imagination of stargazers since antiquity. What is the shape of the universe? Does the universe have and edge? Is it infinitely big? Dr. Hitchman aims to clarify this fascinating area of mathematics. This non-Euclidean geometry text is organized intothree natural parts. Chapter 1 provides an overview including a brief history of Geometry, Surfaces, and reasons to study Non-Euclidean Geometry. Chapters 2-7 contain the core mathematical content of the text, following the ErlangenProgram, which develops geometry in terms of a space and a group of transformations on that space. Finally chapters 1 and 8 introduce (chapter 1) and explore (chapter 8) the topic of cosmic topology through the geometry learned in the preceding chapters.
