Book Colonial State and Social Policy

Download or read book Colonial State and Social Policy written by Kwong-Leung Tang and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1998 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial State and Social Policy looks at the determinants of social policy in developing countries in general and Hong Kong in particular in an attempt to remedy inconsistent results, artificial dichotomies of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and an obvious neglect of developing countries in the field of social policy research. Using an integrated approach of quantitative and historical analysis, the study tests out the variables as predicted by the dominant theories in the case of Hong Kong. Of the three major theoretical approaches that dominate research, the industrial society approach, the social democratic model, and the state centered theory, the state centered theory offers the best explanation of policy development. Meanwhile, historical analysis delineates four phases of social development which are marked by different approaches: residualism, "big bang" expansion, incrementalism, and privatization. The results of the study cast many doubts on the applicability of the concept of the "welfare-state regime," as the developmentalist state of Hong Kong has turned to social welfare to create a peaceful environment for its economic development and to enhance the legitimacy of the colonial system.

Book Voluntary Sector and Rural Development

Download or read book Voluntary Sector and Rural Development written by Rajeeb Misra and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voluntary Sector and Rural Development systematically analyzes the theoretical background of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) based on contemporary thoughts on the subject. The book covers the concepts of development and rural development and devotes adequate space to the strategies adopted to rural development in India, including an analysis of the themes of various rural development programs under India's First to Tenth Five-Year Plan. The findings contain many significant observations on the functioning of NGOs. The book constitutes the author's seminal contribution in studying the strategy for poverty removal and rural development. The idea contained here is not only fresh but, in all appearances, pragmatic as well. It points to the role of three forces in the civil society - authority, voluntarism, and profit. It asserts that programs designed to work in a social system, without integrating the above three forces, will not succeed fully. The book also charts out a strategy for adoption by program implementation agencies.

The Western approach to craft and its subordinate position to the arts is contrasted with the prestige of craftmanship in Eastern countries, while the differing ways that craft has attracted the attention of policy agencies, museums, designers and private institutions across regions is also analysed. This volume is vital reading to those interested in the economic features of craft and craftsmanship around the world, as well as for those interested in the importance of policy in bringing about effective sustainable development.

Book The Population Myth

Download or read book The Population Myth written by S.Y. Quraishi and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Population Myth reveals how the right-wing spin to population data has given rise to myths about the 'Muslim rate of growth', often used to stoke majoritarian fears of a demographic skew. The author, S.Y. Quraishi, uses facts to demolish these, and demonstrates how a planned population is in the interest of all communities. The book delves into the Quran and the Hadith to show how Islam might have been one of the first religions in the world to actually advocate smaller families, which is why several Islamic nations today have population policies in place. This busts the other myth - that Muslims shun family planning on religious grounds. Based on impeccable research, this is an important book from a credible voice about the politicization of demographics in India today.

The handbook makes the case for the importance of placing children at the heart of development debates and demonstrates how researchers, policymakers and practitioners can engage children in development. Through reports on field research as well as a critical engagement with theories in development studies and childhood studies, contributors contest normative assumptions about childhood and global development. They tease out and tease apart the complex social, historical, cultural, economic, epidemiological, ecological, geopolitical, and institutional processes transforming what it means to be young in the world today. Showcasing research from both established scholars and early career researchers, and with particular prominence given to the work of authors from the global south, this book will be an essential reference for policymakers, practitioners, and for researchers and students across childhood studies, education, geography, sociology, and global development.
